Introducing the Scotiabank GM VISA Suite of Credit Cards

It has been nearly five years since we last saw GM partner with a Canadian bank to offer a co-branded credit card that earns rewards to be used towards the purchase of a GM car. With that said we are excited to announce that GM is back and with a new banking partner, Scotiabank. The two companies announced today the launch of their Scotiabank GM VISA Suite of Credit Cards that allow holders of the cards to earn up to 5% on their purchases in GM earnings. If you don't want to read the whole post all we can say is that the cards have a very strong reward offering for those looking to buy GM vehicles! Simply jump down the article to our 'Verdict' to see why.

The co-brand suite consists of two cards, the no fee Scotiabank® GM®* VISA* Card and the Scotiabank® GM®* VISA Infinite* Card.

The Verdict
With the release of these cards and with most cards in Canada not changing their reward offering over the past 6 months, I can hopefully say that I was wrong when I predicted that Credit Card Rewards will suffer with the new interchange rate agreement that went into effect this past April. Both of these cards provide extremely strong earn potential! 5% on your first $5,000 or $10,000 in spending each year depending on which card you get and then 2% back on all other eligible spending. That 2% is even available on the no-fee card! There are very few and I mean very few cards that will cost you nothing and essentially earn you 2% cash back. Spend $30,000 a year on the no fee card and after three years you'll have $2,250 towards a GM vehicle or $2,700 towards that same car with the Infinite version. Unlike most cash back cards where you have to wait until your card anniversary to get the cash back, the GM Earnings are similar to many travel rewards credit cards whereby the points or in this case GM Earnings $ are essentially available for use as they post

Of course with that being said, you are limited as to where you can use your rewards. You have one option only and that is using the rewards towards a new car and that new car has to be a GM vehicle. So if you meet these two criteria for rewards, that is, you are eyeing a new car and you are likely to go GM then getting either one of these cards makes great sense. Don't travel much and hate annual fees, the no annual fee card makes great sense. On the other hand if you travel at least once per year (road trip, flying etc.) and don't have another card in your credit card portfolio that offers insurance benefits like out of province medical, trip interruption or flight delay then paying that $79 per year for the Infinite card is well worth it.

The only thing we here at Rewards Canada that we see missing with these cards is a sign up bonus. I believe Scotiabank addressed this with the 5% earn each year on the first $5,000 or $10,000 in spending but by offering even a small sign up bonus incentive like $25 on the no fee card and $50 for the Infinite could easily push a few more people to the cards and since those are one time costs they could be recouped relatively quickly in terms of fees collected from merchants when those members swipe their cards.

Here are some terms and conditions of the GM Earnings:
- Earnings may be applied toward the Total Purchase Price or lease down payment of any eligible new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac. The “Total Purchase Price” consists of the vehicle price (up to the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price), freight and PDI, air tax, and applicable sales taxes.
- The “Total Purchase Price” excludes costs associated with licensing, registration, insurance, dealer fees (where allowed), accessories, additional options, extended warranties, maintenance or service plans and other services such as OnStar and SiriusXM. 2
- If you cancel your credit card, your credit privileges are revoked or your account is closed, your GM Earnings must be redeemed within 90 days or they will be forfeited. If your account is not in good standing, GM Earnings are not eligible for redemption. Please refer to the GM Card Earnings Program Terms and Conditions for details

Redemption Details:
- To redeem the Earnings accumulated with a GM Card, customers can visit www.gmcard.ca and select “My Earnings” or contact the GM Card Reward Centre at 1-888-446-6232 to verify their total Earnings available.
- Once verified, customers can visit any authorized GM dealer and choose their eligible new vehicle. After they have discussed the purchase price of the vehicle, but before signing the contract, they tell the sales representative that they want to redeem their Earnings.
- The customer and the sales representative will then call the GM Card Reward Centre to confirm the total amount of eligible Earnings. During the call, the GM Card Reward Centre will ask for the Primary or Secondary Cardholder’s information for authentication purposes and also obtain certain vehicle sale information from the sales representative and then provide the representative with an authorization number to complete the transaction.
- Once the authorization number is issued, the Earnings amount will be deducted from the total purchase price or lease down payment of their new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac.

We'd love to hear what you think about these new cards from Scotiabank! Is the offering big enough for you that you move from a travel rewards card to one of these two cards? Or are they good enough to be added to your portfolio of cards so that you are carrying travel rewards, cash back and/or GM Earnings cards? Let us know what you think by commenting below.

The Loonie is sagging, so how can you save money when making purchases in USD?

With the Loonie hitting lows that we haven't seen in many many years one question that has popped up several times in our email is how can you save some money if you are travelling to the U.S. or doing online shopping from U.S. retailers.

Some tips that I have seen others provide include getting a U.S. Dollar credit card issued by a Canadian bank and/or opening U.S. dollar accounts with a Canadian bank. If you are just going about this now it isn't going to save you any money. Why? Well you have to convert your hard earned Canadian dollars into U.S. dollars to fund that bank account or to pay that U.S. dollar credit card. The only savings from the U.S. dollar credit card is that it won't incur a foreign exchange transaction fee as you would see on most credit and charge cards in Canada (except for a couple which we mention below) If you have had a U.S. bank account for sometime there is a good chance your converted Canadian Dollars into U.S. when the exchange rate was favourable or perhaps you have a source of U.S. income so you don't have to worry about the exchange and are actually making more money now due to the exchange rate so you can save money this way. We actually do exactly that here at Rewards Canada as have U.S. income that goes straight into our U.S. dollar account. We keep some in the account for our U.S. travel but exchange out as much as possible right now to gain on the weak Canadian dollar.  Having a U.S. dollar account however doesn't help too much for online shopping unless of course you have a U.S. dollar credit card. So how can you save some money on those trips to the U.S. or for online shopping? Read on.

The way to save at least 2 to 3% on your U.S. purchases without opening a U.S. bank account or getting a U.S. dollar card from a Canadian bank is to acquire a credit card that waives the foreign transaction fee. Granted you are still suffering from the weak Canadian dollar when you purchase something in USD however these cards don't charge the foreign transaction fee as seen on all other cards issued in Canada. Remember that this doesn't only apply to USD transactions. Years ago we had a small business owner contact us about the best rewards for purchasing something like $30,000 in goods per month from New Zealand. If that owner was to use one of these cards right now they would be saving between $600 and $900 per month!

These cards are offered by Chase Canada as well as Rogers and they will not incur the 2 to 3% fee when you make purchases in USD. Our favorite is the Chase Marriott Premier Visa since it is travel related, has no fee in the first year and offers a lot of free nights as the sign up bonus!

Marriott Rewards Premier Visa Card

This is an offer where it can be totally worth it to buy the points for hotel stays as you can you pull out value of US 8 cents or more on certain redemptions (check out Loyalty Travelers evaluation here!).

Avianca LifeMiles - Up to 145% Bonus Miles when you buy miles - Must register today and buy by September 15

Avianca LifeMiles has been famous for selling their miles with a 100% bonus every few months and then in the spring of this year they upped that to 120%. Now with the latest bonus it has now jumped to 135%!!! But wait it gets even better, for the first few days of this promotion LifeMiles has teamed up with Passageiro De Primeira to add an extra 10% on top of the 135% for a 145% bonus if you buy at the highest tier bonus. To earn that extra 10% you must register today and buy by September 15th.

If you have followed us for sometime you'll know this is a decent option to get Star Alliance flights on the cheap especially in business class. However Avianca announced back on September 30th of 2014 the price to buy miles will go up 10% and had changes to their award chart on October 15th which were a devaluation. So what should you do? If you know that you can make your travel work and get the LifeMiles redemption(s) of your choice go ahead and buy the miles however I wouldn't buy them if you don't think you'll use them over then 3-6 months just in case another award chart devaluation comes along.

If you go ahead with this offer at the highest tier bonus the miles will cost you US 1.35 cents a piece (C 1.78 cents approx)! So buying 150,000 LifeMiles will cost you US$4,950 but you should get a total of 367,500 miles with the bonus. There some concern that the extra 10% may not be legit and even if it isn't the price to buy with a 135% bonus is 1.4 cents  (C1.86 cents) which is still a great deal.

Normally a decent feature of LifeMiles is their Cash + Part Miles option but that was devalued over a year ago. This option only requires that you have 40% of the points for a reward but that offer has you buy the rest of the miles (the other 60%) at about 1.56 cents per mile so you are better off buying the whole amount of miles required for an award through this promo.

Some things to consider with the buy miles option before you pull the trigger is that their call center tends to be on the less helpful side so you are better off booking award tickets online which also means you are limited to the powers of that source, mixed class awards are not allowed unless you book each award ticket as separate one way flights and they have devalued the program without notice in the past so only buy these miles if you think you will use them in the next short while

Offer details
Earn up to 145% Bonus LifeMiles when you buy LifeMiles online. Full details Until Sep 15 for 145% bonus, up to a 135% bonus until Sep 30
