Since we value AIR MILES Reward Miles at 11 to 15 cents apiece we would definitely advise you NOT to buy miles at this price unless you are just shy of an award (say 100 miles) and need to redeem ASAP. Big Air Miles Bonuses for Gift Card Purchases at Safeway - 1.2 Reward Miles per $1 spent (until Jun 18, 15)

We haven't seen AIR MILES bonuses for buying gift cards at Safeway since late December but this week the bonuses have returned! These aren't as good as the December offer of 70 AIR MILES per $50 card but are better than the 55 miles in November. With this offer you'll earn 1.2 miles per dollar on these cards or if you work the other way, we value AIR MILES at 11 to 15 cents a piece so you are essentially earning $7.70 to $10.50 with each card. You have to print out the coupons and you can find them here

The merchant gift cards included are Spafinder, Bass Pro Shops, Sears, Roots, Cara Foods,  Mark's, Sport Chek, and Joeys.

I bought many cards during the last two go rounds for a lot of bonus Air Miles plus the double Membership Rewards points as I purchased them on my American Express Gold Rewards card which awards 2 points per dollar spent at grocery stores. Other credit cards you can look at using to really bump your miles/points earning on these types of purchases include (earning is per dollar spent):

Earning Stories: 9,000 Club Carlson Points on a 5 day Budget Car Rental

Welcome to the next post in the Earning Stories series right here on Rewards Canada. For years we have provided you with the details on earning points and miles (both regular earning and bonus opportunities) and these stories show the actual offers in action.

This story revolves around a family trip from back in April and looks at the earning story for our car rental by crediting the rental to Carlson Rezidor Hotels Club Carlson program.

The car rental was made through Budget as they had the best pricing on the vehicle type we wanted and of course if you read FFB you'll know that Club Carlson has some huge bonuses for Avis and Budget rentals.  I booked the offer using the Budget promotion for Club Carlson members of 8,250 Bonus Gold Points that I took off of our Club Carlson Bonus Points page:

Although the rental ended on April 10th, I didn't see any points post until May 2nd and this is typical of Budget to post on the 2nd day of the month following your rental. However on the 2nd I only saw 750 points which was the base amount for the rental post to my Club Carlson account:

I called up Budget and asked them why only the base point posted. Budget looked into it and told may their system showed them submitting both the 750 base points and 8,250 bonus points. Budget said to wait until the next sweep to see if the points post to the account and if not to contact Club Carlson. So I did just that as the points did not show up in my account and after a little bit of back and forth with Club Carlson they posted the 8,250 bonus points, albeit as a discretionary bonus rather than a partner bonus:

At the outset of this rental we ended up earning the 750 base Club Carlson Points plus the 8,250 bonus points from the offer. All told 9,000 points posted from the rental which is enough points for a 9,000 point award night redemption!

Overall I think this was yet another great earning action for the rental and for what we paid. Considering we get a potential free night worth upwards of $150 for a ~$350 rental. We like to rent SUVs but I could see people getting an even better return on a promotion like this by renting a smaller vehicle that does not cost as much!

There you go. Once again you can see bonus Points offers in action! Granted there was a little leg work involved in getting all the points to post but all in all it wasn't that bad. We'd love to hear your experiences with this promotion, have you had difficulties in it posting?

- Watch the rates that include bonus miles - For us it is about 50/50 in terms of earning bonuses on rentals, many times rates are out there that are quite a bit cheaper and provide more value versus paying more and earning more miles. No news today, but an informal survey: When booking award tickets with Aeroplan, Air Miles, British Airways, or any other program that may add carrier surcharges do you take into account time and connection considerations? That is what is the time vs. money correlation for you? For example do you book a direct flight to Europe and incur $600 or more in surcharges but get there in 8 hours or do you book via the U.S. or other countries and have multiple connections with perhaps 12 hours or more of travel so you only pay $150 in surcharges? TD Travel Rewards Visas to lose value in reward redemptions as of August 16th

At the start of 2015 we put out a piece that got a lot of coverage about 2015 being the year that credit card rewards come crashing down to earth here in Canada.  We predicted this based on the voluntary lowering of the average interchange rate that is charged to merchants. For the most part, this hasn't really taken place yet which is a great thing as we've seen some issuers actually release cards that have higher rewards (BMO for one) but we've seen one card that was curtailed right at the start of the year and now we have another family of cards that are being devalued. Perhaps that banks are now seeing what the effect of the new interchange rate average is doing to their numbers as it has been roughly two months of it coming to fruition.

The latest set of cards that are being devalued are the TD Travel Rewards Visas. Of course the main card in the family of three cards is the TD First Class Visa Infinite Card, a mainstay in our Canada's Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings and also one of the most flexible cards is affected by this change that kicks in on August 16th.

Its funny how TD markets the change as the points being even more flexible now:

The only reason they are more flexible is that you no longer have to hit that minimum 10,000 points before redeeming. Now you can redeem as little as 250 points for a $1 credit to any travel booked on the card. Previously that 10,000 point requirement was for a $50 credit which was an equivalent of 200 points for $1. So while true they are using to hide the major devaluation hitting the card.

What they don't tell you in the marketing is that for redemptions with a value of up to $1,200 your points will be worth less than they are now.

The TD First Class Visa Infinite Card and Platinum Visa Card have always been known as having a 1.5% return on your spending excluding the bonus you get at Expedia.  With these changes that rate drops to 1.2% if you redeem 300,000 points ($1,200) or less. I would gather that most of you are in this position as 300,000 points is $100,000 of spending on the cards which a lot of people don't reach or take sometime to get to. Only if you redeem over 300,000 points (over $1,200) will you achieve the old rate of return of 1.5% for the portion of the travel over $1,200. Ultimately you can never achieve the same return due to that first $1,200 being redeemed at the 1.2% level. If you use TD's example of $2,275 travel equals 515,000 points you'll be hitting a ~1.33% return.

We here at Rewards Canada are very surprised at this change from TD considering their main competitors are still providing returns of up to 2% or more on many redemptions options. This could also be the big change we predicted at the start of the year however. TD could simply be the leader here and the other card companies may follow suit. We know some banks were willing to take a loss for the first few months of the interchange rate adjustment and they may well be applauding TD for this move as they can now adjust their cards accordingly to bring them back into the black.

The only good news to come out of this change is the TD First Class Visa Infinite now sees increased Travel Medical Insurance coverage of 21 days versus the previous 15 days as well as Trip Cancellation insurance being increased to $1,500 from $1,000.

The offer is for Double Aeroplan Miles for each round-trip or two one-way flight segments in Business Class or Premium rouge.
