Nov 13 Update: US Airways-American Airline merger back on, 50% Bonus Points at Petro Canada, Shangri-La Golden Circle Game Week 3

First full day of the Airline Information Mega Event here in YVR. Great turn out this year with over 450 attendees from around the globe representing airlines, hotels, credit card companies and loyalty/ancillary suppliers. Still managing to provide with the daily updates straight from the conference!

News, Tips & Tricks

Don't forget to enter week 3 of Shangri-La's Golden Circle 3rd Annivesary contest to earn up to 1,200 free GC Award Points. Although they state it can take 3-4 weeks to get the points, my points from Week 1 have already shown up in my Golden Circle account!

The biggest news to come out in the last day is the settlement of the suit brought against the proposed US Airways-American Airlines merger by the US Department of Justice. What does this mean? It means merger talks can continue between the two airlines with hopes that the American Airlines bankruptcy judge will approve it and then it shouldn't be too long before the two airlines merge barring any other unknown hurdles that may be put in front of them.

Transfer points to Aeroplan to earn up to 25,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles

Aeroplan has once again brought back their partner transfer bonus that we saw in April,  last November and last spring. Basically what it entails is transferring points out of other select loyalty programs into your Aeroplan account. Just like in April, the offer is once again cumulative across all participating partners however the bonus maxes out at 25,000 miles instead of 40,000 and there are no financial partners involved this time as well. Basically you can transfer from partners like Starwood, Hertz and more (see the last graphic) and as long as the total Aeroplan miles deposited from all of them reaches one of the bonus target levels you will be awarded the respective bonus miles.

And just like the last two versions of this offer, American Express Membership Rewards is unfortunately not included. so chances are I will not use the promo this time (again).

If you are a Starwood Preferred Guest collector you can really up the bonus by taking advantage of their 5,000 Mile bonus offer when you convert 20,000 Starpoints into Aeroplan. Which means in this promotion you can get 29,000 Aeroplan Miles for 20,000 Starpoints or if you transfer 20k four times, you'll get 125,000 Aeroplan Miles for 80,000 Starpoints. Of course I like to keep Starpoints for award nights or cash+points stays within the Starwood family but some of you may like this transfer option.

Here is the offer as it will appear on Aeroplan Bonus Mile Promotions page tomorrow:

Earn up to 25,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles when you convert points from a wide selection of Aeroplan partner loyalty programs (hotel, car rental, and points.com). Bonuses are as follows and are awarded on a cumulative basis. Convert Points to
5,000 Aeroplan Miles to earn a 1,000 Mile bonus
10,000 Aeroplan Miles to earn a 2,000 Mile bonus
20,000 Aeroplan Miles to earn 4,000 Mile bonus
50,000 Aeroplan Miles to earn a 10,000 Mile bonus
100,000 Aeroplan Miles to earn a 25,000 Mile bonus
Full details
Valid until Dec 9, 13

Nov 12 Update: Airline Information Mega Event, Delta SkyMiles interim devaluation, BA Double Avios for Qatar Airways flights

First update of this short week which maybe one of only a few as we are going to be at the Airline Information Mega Event conference on Frequent Flyer Programs, Ancilliary Revenue and Co-brand credit cards. In fact, Rewards Canada's Patrick Sojka will speaking in the Co-brand track portion on Thursday. Watch for tweets and instagram shots however during this time from the conference, the Mega Awards (industry awards) and more!

News, Tips & Tricks

Delta SkyMiles keeps digging themselves into a deeper hole. Bulding on the news from United the previous Friday, Delta announced this past Friday that they will have an interim award chart before there majorily devalued new award chart takes affect in June 2014. Here is how Delta put it on FlyerTalk:

This afternoon, you’ll be able to see some updates to our Award Ticket charts on delta.com. To balance continued investments in products and services, we regularly evaluate Award pricing and adjust it periodically. Select redemption levels are changing for Award Tickets booked on or after November 8, 2013, for travel on or after February 1, 2014. You can continue to book Award Tickets for travel before February 1, 2014, at the current Award redemption levels.
Please review delta.com/charts for existing and updated mileage redemption charts by region and additional information.
These changes are effective immediately for travel on or after February 1st. Once again Delta drops a bombshell with the 'no advance notice' on award chart changes. In general most of the changes on this interim award chart are for business class and first class redemptions however economy class from Canada to Hawaii, the Middle East and Southern Asian subcontinent are going up as well.

Hyatt Gold Passport: latest program to jump on the devaluation bandwagon

United, Delta, Hilton, Aeroplan, you name it, many popular airline and hotel programs have been updating, enhancing, devaluing their reward offerings over the past 10 months and it hasn't stopped as last Friday news came out that Hyatt was also changing their reward requirements. The news of the changes came out on Friday, we actually got a Hyatt email yesterday outlining the changes yesterday and while in general some of the changes aren't so bad there are some that really are! For Canadians it is both not so bad and really bad. First it is not so bad as Hyatt has a very small presence in Canada with only 5 hotels so the Gold Passport program doesn't hold as much weight as others for travel within Canada however the really bad part is that for Canadians who travel abroad (and also to the Hyatt's within Canada) the primary source for earning Gold Passport points in on hotel stays. We don't have a dedicated Hyatt credit card like the United States which you can earn tons of Gold Passport points with. In fact the only card that you can collect Gold Passport points with is the Diners Club Club Rewards MasterCard which unfortunately is closed to new applications and the conversion ratio for it isn't great (2,250 Club Rewards points = 750 Gold Passport Points).

Now on to the actual devaluation!

Here are the new and old award charts for Gold Passport redemptions:

As you can see there is a new category, Category 7. At this time only the 6 most premier Hyatt Hotels are being moved in Category 7. They are Park Hyatt Beaver Creek, Park Hyatt Milan, Park Hyatt Paris Vendome, Park Hyatt Sydne,y Park Hyatt Tokyo and the Park Hyatt Zurich. This new category costs 30,000 points per night for a standard award. Previously they were in Category 6 which used to be (well is until January 6th) only 22,000 points. The Category 6 redemption level of 22,000 points has been one of the if not the best high end redemptions available out of all hotel loyalty programs due based on value. There has been a lot of speculation coming about this redemption level since it has been such a great value for stays at places like the 6 Park Hyatts mentioned and other high end Hyatt properties.

According to the email from Hyatt Gold Passport, an additional 38 hotels are changing categories. 21 are moving to a higher category while 17 are moving down. None of the Hyatt properties in Canada are included in the category changes. They will simply be affected by the new award night redemption changes. Overall there are no changes for Category 1-4 hotels which of course is a good thing. Category 5 hotels go from 18,000 points to 20,000 points and Category 6 go from 22,000 to 25,000 points. From the charts above you can also see that Regency Club/Grand Club and Suite award night redemptions are all increasing for Category 2-6 hotels. It goes without saying that the six Category 7 hotels also have new redemption rates for those premium room award nights and this is where it hurts most, 15,000 more points per night for a suite in one of these hotels!

Another big devaluation comes in the points for suite or points for club room upgrade options. Up until January 6th the suite upgrade remains at only 6,000 points per stay for up to four nights on the best flexible rate. After that it will 6,000 points per night. All in all this isn't a bad deal for short stays when compared to other programs but if you have a four night stay that is a huge increase to go from 6,000 points to 24,000 points! For club room upgrades it is 3,000 points per stay until January 6th after which it will also be on a per night basis.

Overall it is never a good thing to see a devaluation but even with these increased rates the Hyatt Gold Passport program is still very valuable. The worst part is the new Category 7 introduction, no doubt more hotels will be moved into this category over time and those redemption rates for suites are a sore spot. 30,000 points for a standard room at the Park Hyatt Paris Vendome? That's actually not too bad in the grand scheme of things even if it is a 36% increase from the previous rate. In a nutshell I believe these changes affect us Canucks much less than the United changes we discussed last week but I do feel for you if you are a major user of the Gold Passport program!

You can find all the details as to which hotels are changing and complete charts here.

What are your thoughts on the changes? Are you going to continue using Hyatt Gold Passport or will you switch programs? We'd love to hear from by commenting below!

(Is there irony in this that it is being posted from the Hyatt Regency Vancouver?!?)

By now It is common knowledge that Canadians love their travel reward programs.  But with more than 75 travel reward credit cards to choice from, knowing which ones score top marks among Canadians might make picking the right card a littler easier.

From September to October 2013, RewardsCanada.ca polled more than 17,000 users to find the answers as part of its third annual ‘Canada Choice’ travel reward credit card study.

The results were stunning. Of the five travel reward categories, RBC claimed top marks in three including:

"There have been significant changes to the Canadian Travel Reward Credit Card landscape and these survey results come at a time when people are looking for guidance on choosing the right card,” said Patrick Sojka of RewardsCanada.ca  “While our study captures the popular choices, it’s always best for Canadians to pick are card based on need.

RewardsCanada.ca is the definitive choice for Canadians looking for helping in choosing the right card. With online tools, news and updates and complete analysis, RewardsCanada provides Canadians with the groundwork for choosing a loyalty program and.

Rewards Canada offer the following five tips in selecting the right travel reward credit card:

1. Check under the hood -- make sure you understand how the earning and redemption mechanics of the card work including expiring policies for programs that issue miles or points
2. Set a travel goal -- knowing when and where you want travel will go along way in helping you narrow down the appropriate card
3. Hey Big Spender -- Do the math and have a realistic idea of how much spending you'll put through your card each year
4. PIck a card and stick to it -- once you identified your card it's critical you put all your spending through the card -- splitting you spend among several cards only delays your time to redemption
5. Fee or Free -- Most annual fee card pay for themselves with a one week car rental when you decline the rental car company's insurance and use the coverage from your credit card

This feature is a continuation of RewardsCanada.ca’s “Guide to Choosing a Travel Rewards Credit Card” which is aimed at helping the Canadian consumer choose the right travel rewards credit card for them.

Nov 5 Update: Hilton HHonors devalued once again, Star Alliance game to win Gold Status, lots of bonuses!

As the new month progresses along there is more news and lots more bonuses to pass your way!

News, Tips & Tricks

The devaluations of programs in the travel rewards industry continue! Yesterday Hilton HHonors announced the removal of their Points+Fixed Miles option. This option gave HHonors members HHonors points and a fixed number of airline miles for each Hilton stay. It was a very useful combination for low rate or one night Hilton stays as some airline programs like Virgin Atlantic's Flying Club awarded 1,000 miles on those stays! This change takes place on January 6th and after that date HHonors will offer two Earning Style Options: Points & Points (HHonors Base Points + HHonors Bonus Points) and Points & Miles (HHonors Base Points + Variable Airline/Rail Miles). If you have Points+Fixed Miles set on your account you will be automatically switched to the Points+Variable option (which is 10 HHonors Points and 1 Miles for every US$1 spent). Complete details on the change can be found here

Star Alliance is running a game where you can win Gold Status in the Star Alliance program of your choice. The 2 fastest times from each program will win the status, so as Gary Leff states your best bet maybe to enter not with Aeroplan or MileagePlus but one of the lesser known programs that may not have as many entries. You can enter the contest here. Best of luck to you!
