Travel Hacking 101 - Earn 91,000 Aeroplan Points or 37,000 British Airways Avios for free* (Updated August 20, 2021)

Quite a few years ago RewardsCanada.ca was featured in an article on Travel Hacking. What is travel hacking? Simply put it is what we have been doing here every day on RewardsCanada.ca for nearly 12 14 15 16 17 19  20 years, but it simply has a name put to it now.  The article revolved heavily around a new site that charges people a fee for things that are found for free right here on Rewards Canada, Flyertalk, Inside Flyer, Boardingarea, Redflagdeals and many other places. To me it boggles the mind that someone would pay $97 per year to get the information you find for free here or those other places I mentioned. They claim they will get you one free flight within 30 days otherwise you can get your money back (or at least 1 free flight per year). It doesn't boggle my mind as much anymore, everyone is different and some people are willing to pay for a service while others aren't. Good on those who start a business where there is a need. I know from feedback of my readers that many of you have enjoyed tons of free flights, hotel nights, car rentals and more due to the information provided on Rewards Canada. Right from the onset of creating RC that was my goal, to help all Canadians get more Miles, more Points, more Rewards!

Well folks if you don’t already know these techniques, I am prepared to give you this information for free in this post (I assume veteran RCers won’t need this as you have probably already done it) on how to get that free flight (or flights) excluding taxes and fees. It primarily revolves around credit card sign up bonuses from cards that either have no annual fee or where the first year fee is waived.  The only ‘costs’ associated with this method are putting your everyday credit card spend onto these cards to meet the minimum requirements for getting the sign up bonus. Now if you don't think you can hit the minimum spend on the cards you don't have to apply for them all at once, you can take your time and apply for cards once you've hit each spend individually. All this means is that it will take a little longer to earn your fee flights.

* I state free in the title as I assume you would be spending this money anyways on these credit cards so you might as well be rewarded for it with free Aeroplan miles or Avios!

TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card
This card is offering a welcome bonus of 25,000 Aeroplan points which is split as 10,000 points on your first purchase and 15,000 more when you spend $1,000 on the card in the first 90 days. It is also offering a bonus Buddy Pass which is worth at least $300 if not more Plus they are waiving the first year annual fee on the primary card and the first three additional cards if you apply by March 6, 2022. Now you have at least 26,000 Aeroplan Points at no cost to you other than spending on the card (This amount includes the points earned to reach the spend requirement)

CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card 
This card is offering a welcome bonus of 20,000 Aeroplan points which is split as 10,000 points on your first purchase and 10,000 more when you spend $1,000 on the card in the first four statement periods. This card also has a Buddy Pass but you are only allowed to earn one. So you could choose between the TD or the CIBC card to earn the Buddy Pass. Plus they are waiving the first year annual fee on the primary card  You can apply for this card here. 

Now you have at least 77,000 Aeroplan points at no cost to you other than spending on the cards.   (This amount includes the points earned to reach the spend requirement)

and then get this card:

American Express® Green Card

This card is offering 10,000 points when you spend $1,000 on it in the first three months and it is a no fee card! Those 10,000 points can now be converted directly to 10,000 Aeroplan points or British Airways Avios. You can apply for the card here.

 Now you have at least 88,000 Aeroplan points or 11,000 Avios at no cost to you other than spending on the cards. (This amount includes the points earned to reach the spend requirement)

and then you can get yourself this card

mbna Best Western Rewards MasterCard
You earn 20,000 points with the card with no annual fee after your first purchase You can apply for this card here.

These 20,000 Best Western Rewards Points can then be transferred to Aeroplan or Avios at a 5:1 basis (20,000 Best Western Rewards Points = 4,000 Aeroplan Miles or Avios) which means you could have 92,000 Aeroplan points or 15,000 Avios if you are going the British Airways route. (This amount includes the points earned to reach the spend requirement)

And now one more option for British Airways Executive Club:

HSBC World Elite® Mastercard®.
This card is offering a welcome bonus of up to 70,000 HSBC Rewards Points with no annual fee in the first year. You get 20,000 points upon approval and 20,000 more when you spend $5,000 within 180 days of account opening. Then you can get 20,000 on your 1st year anniversary and 10,000 more for adding a supplementary card. Since we only look at points you earn at no cost we'll take only the first 40,000 points into consideration here.  You can then convert these points to British Airways Executive Club Avios at a 2.5:1 ratio (they also have transfer bonuses several times per year) .  Now you have at least at least 37,000 Avios at no cost to you other than spending on the cards.  (This amount includes the points earned to reach the spend requirement)

There you go just with these offers you can earn over 89,000 Aeroplan Points or 30,000 British Airways Executive Club Avios.  That opens up a lot options to redeem for flights.  I recommend reading Utilizing British Airways' Executive Club for flights in North America and How you can easily get a free flight between Toronto and Dublin, Ireland (pre taxes/fees) or 4 flights for $240+fees for some more ideas

Now do you want to keep any of these cards after the first year free is up? If the Aeroplan program works for you then the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card is worth keeping and then ditch the CIBC card after you earn the points and they post to your account. The Marriott cards are awesome for hotel stays let alone for converting to airlines. The Best Western card does not have an annual fee ever so that would be one to let go of and then apply for again in the future to get the bonus once again. The HSBC card has a lot of other amazing aspects to it other than the sign up bonus and being able to convert to Avios so it can very well be a keeper as well.

You can also take advantage of other free Aeroplan point offers that you can use to add even more points to your account albeit not that many. I would recommend that you visit our Aeroplan and Avios Bonus opportunities pages regularly and look under the ‘other offers’ section for any and all free mileage offers that may come up.

Originally offering 15 cities in the U.S. they quickly added other cities including Montreal and Vancouver here in Canada. Gary over at View from the Wing brings us the details of Alaska Airlines increasing the cost of Air France KLM award ticket redemptions made through the Mileage Plan program. Air Canada: 50% Bonus Aeroplan Miles for Premium Class travel this summer

I don't mean to inundate you with Aeroplan offers this morning but they have released another promotion worth mentioned. This time it is a rarely seen near-systemwide route bonus! Albeit for premium fare classes only so routes without premium fare classes are not included but a nice promotion to see from the Air Canada and Aeroplan team. For me unfortunately I actually have some premium fares booked already so they won't count with this promo. This is one piece of the current puzzle I don't enjoy from the AC/Aeroplan is all their recent promos do not include already booked flights! Makes sense from their point however, why reward those who have already booked those trips? These offers are meant to stimulate new demand but they do have to be careful as those who have already booked, like myself, may question our loyalty to the program for constantly being excluded from promotions like this. Anyways here is the offer as it will appear on Rewards Canada's Aeroplan page later today:

Rewards Canada through the years!

As many of you may have seen, Rewards Canada underwent a renovation that launched late last week. A new logo, new website design and new social media branding. Rewards Canada is a huge website with tons of content so as you navigate the site you may find some pages still in the last version but don't worry I am going through and updating between 5-10 pages a day and hope to have the majority of the site transferred to the new look by the end of May! There will also be some tweaks to new site (I am going to update some of the content fonts) as time goes on as well.

The enhancements are that you redeem via the Choice Rewards program rather than the Platinum Class program (from what I can tell the value of your points is exactly the same) plus the addition of Price Protection and Concierge Services seen with most World Elite MasterCards. Finally it appears the limit of 400,000 points per year seen on the Platinum Class card are gone with this card

Aeroplan announces new partnership with UPS Store = Bonus Aeroplan Miles

Aeroplan announced a new partnership with the UPS Store today where members can earn Aeroplan miles for utilizing services provided by UPS Stores. Members can earn 1 Aeroplan Mile per $1 spent up to a 1,000 miles per day. Plus they can earn 150 bonus miles on their first transaction at any UPS Store in Canada until December 31.

There is also a free 500 Aeroplan Mile offer if you sign up for the Get More Card from UPS which is a small business solution. I hope the actual stores have more details as the website states nothing about the card and if you go to the UPS's site for Get More Cards it states the following "We are in process of improving our Small Business Solutions Program to better serve you. Please check back in May."

May 6 Update: Kayak.com launches Canadian site, new Aeroplan IHG promo, FFB8: Enter today!

Welcome to the first day of the first full week with the new look Rewards Canada in action! As you may have noticed RC underwent a renovation with new logos, new social media backgrounds and a whole new website template! Other than the RC homepage there haven't been too many of the other pages updated to the new look yet as this is going to be an ongoing process for me with about 5-10 pages being transferred over per day. I hope that the majority of the site will be using the new look by the end of May! There will also have to be some tweaks to the new site as I learn what works and what doesn't and those will be updated as needed. I hope you all like the new look!

Week 1 Contest Rules

1. Contest End: Contest runs until 11:59pm EST on May 9, 2013
2. Eligibility:
Contest is open to anyone over the age of 18 anywhere in the world except where prohibited by law. Residents of Quebec, Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Sudan are also ineligible to participate. The Contest is void in these countries and where prohibited or restricted by law. Limited to one entry per person per method (maximum TBD entries). Multiple entries per way and/or automatic entries will be deleted
3. Contest Entry:
To enter the contest you must like the Frequent Flyer Bonuses Facebook Page and participate on the page either by leaving a comment per the instructions listed above. You must like the Frequent Flyer Bonuses Facebook page at the time of draw and prize awarding. Limited to one entry per person (we will only count the first comment should a person post multiple comments)
4. By entering the competition, participants automatically accept these Terms and Conditions
5. Prize Drawing: On or about June 6th, 2013 a random drawing from each section of the contest will be conducted from among all eligible entries received
6. Awarding of Prizes:
The selected winner(s) will be contacted by email and will have Seven (7) days to respond with their name and mailing address. After Seven (7) days no further attempts will be made to contact the winner and another entrant may be chosen to receive the prize. Prize packs will be mailed/emailed to the winner no later then June 15, 2013. Prizes are provided “as is” and without any warranty of any kind. Prizes are non-transferable. No cash redemption or prize substitution allowed by winner. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prize of equal or greater value if advertised prize becomes unavailable. Except where prohibited by law, entry in the Contest constitutes each Entrant’s consent for Sponsor to use Entrant’s first name and last initial, city and state/country of residence, Contest Entry for advertising, publicity, and promotional purposes in any media, online or off-line, without further permission, consent, payment or other consideration, unless prohibited by law
10. The FFB Group reserves the right to request written proof of a possible winner’s residence and age before awarding a prize.
11. All provincial, federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend this sweepstakes or any portion hereof, or to disqualify any individual implicated in any of the following actions, if for any reason: (a) infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, actions by entrants, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes which, in Sponsor’s sole opinion, corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the sweepstakes, (b) the sweepstakes or any website associated therewith (or any portion thereof) becomes corrupted or does not allow the proper processing of entries per these rules, or (c) the sweepstakes is otherwise not capable of running as planned by the Sponsors. By entering, entrants agree to comply with these rules. Any entrant who attempts to tamper with this sweepstakes in any way shall be disqualified. In the event of dispute as to who submitted an online entry, the entry will be deemed submitted by the Authorized Account Holder of the email address submitted at the time of entry. “Authorized Account Holder” is defined as the natural person assigned to an email address by an Internet access provider, on-line service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the email address in question. Additional Rules for the Priority Pass prizes:
- Employees of Priority Pass and The Collinson Group of companies, and their immediate families, are not eligible to enter, nor is anyone under 18 years of age.
- Current Priority Pass members are not eligible but can nominate another party to receive the prize.
- The winner must complete an application form and provide credit card details before the prize of Priority Pass membership can be issued.
