Great news for those of you who have the American Express® Aeroplan®* Reserve Card or having been eyeing on getting it! There is a positive change to card that took on April 7 that sees it become more valuable. We were first alerted to it on Twitter by our follower Joshua:
And not too long after Amex corporate sent us an email confirming this change.
That changes sees the card base earn rate boosted to 1.25 Aeroplan points per dollar spend from the 1 point that the card has been awarding since it re-launched last November. This is a welcome increase for this Ultra Premium Aeroplan Card offering from American Express as the card's equivalents from TD and CIBC both have had 1.25 points per dollar on non-category bonused spending since their inception. The Amex card does have higher earn rates in several other categories, namely Air Canada purchases but I would believe with the way the travel situation is in Canada right now not many cardmembers are attracted by that earn rate just yet so it makes sense for Amex to provide this permanent boost to the base earn rates for this card.
To recap here are all the earn rates for the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card:
- 3 Aeroplan points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases made directly with Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations
- 2 Aeroplan points for every $1 spent on eligible dining and food delivery purchases in Canada
- 1.25 Aeroplan points for every $1 spent on everything else
On top of these earn rates the card offers up to 65,000 Aeroplan Points as its welcome bonus, 1,000 Status Qualifying Miles and 1 Status Qualifying Segment for every $5,000 spend on the card, first checked bag free, Maple Leaf lounge access in North America and much more. You can see all its benefits and how it stacks up against the other ultra premium Aeroplan cards in our piece: The New Aeroplan credit cards compared.
It is nice to see Amex boosting the base earn rate to a level that should be expected for an Ultra Premium card that carries a $599 annual fee - especially when its selling point earn rate for Air Canada purchases is not much of a consideration for a lot of people right now.
