New WestJet card offers: 350 dollars, 2x dollars on grocery, restaurant & food delivery + $0 companion voucher for the World Elite, 100 welcome dollars for the basic card

WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard

The next set of offers on the suite of WestJet Mastercards were revealed today. Gone is the best ever offer on the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard but this latest offer is pretty good in its own right and is well suited for those who didn't jump on the last one due to that high $5,000 spend requirement. Also, in a rare move by WestJet and RBC, we see an increased welcome bonus on the basic WestJet RBC Mastercard.

Here are details of the new offers:

WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard

A very healthy 350 WestJet dollars after first purchase plus 2x the WestJet dollars on groceries, restaurants and food delivery for the first 3 months is the new offer for this card. This means you'll earn a 3% return for each dollar you spend in those categories instead of 1.5%. I like this welcome offer as you only have to spend $1 to get that initial welcome bonus of 350 WestJet dollars and you don't have to stress about meeting any minimum spend requirements. You can simply go out and buy your groceries, support your local restaurants and have your food delivered and earn those 2x dollars - doesn't matter whether you spend $50 or $5,000 in the span of those 3 months.

The welcome bonus doesn't end there however. If you are a regular visitor to Rewards Canada you most likely know the World Elite version of the card has featured a $0 companion voucher since late February and it continues to be part of the new welcome offer released today. This voucher is valid for flights to all WestJet destinations excluding their Trans-Atlantic routes. You have one year from the date the voucher is issued to book your travel and with flight schedules typically going out almost a year this effectively gives you almost two years before you actually have to travel. To receive the $0 companion voucher you must apply for the card by May 31.

If you choose to use it to on flights to the Caribbean, Hawaii or Mexico this new promotional voucher provides the cardholder with an additional savings of $399 as that is the typical fee when using vouchers to those destinations. Add this to the 350 WestJet dollars you get on the first purchase and you have no less than $630 in value ($749 - $119 annual fee). I say 'no less' as that's not taking into the savings already provided by the voucher on the actual ticket price. For example if you book a flight to the Caribbean which is $500 per person before taxes and fees that second voucher is saving you the full $500. On top of that you can always look at getting a second card in your household, especially if you travel as a group of four or more as you'll can take advantage of using two vouchers. The card that almost never seems to have an increased welcome bonus got an increased welcome bonus today! You'll earn the standard 50 WestJet dollars on your first purchase with the card and then if you spend $1,000 on the card in the first three months you'll receive an additional 50 WestJet dollars for 100 WestJet dollars in total. This card has a $39 annual fee but does come with an annual credit card companion voucher for round-trip travel within Canada and the continental U.S. for $199 CAD (plus taxes, fees and other ATC charges)

Wrapping it Up

Looks like I was partially right in our post back in February as to what the new offer would be:

My guess is 250 or 350 WestJet dollars with a lower or even no spend requirement outside of the first purchase you make on the card

Mind you my guess was pretty open ended covering bonuses we've seen from them before but I'm glad it is the higher of the two along with the lower spend requirement! It is the latter that I think a lot of potential customers will be happy with as we did get a lot of feedback with people not liking that $5,000 spend requirement on the last offer. One purchase and the 350 dollars is yours and then you can happily earn 2x WestJet dollars on the categories that for many of us are really the only big spend categories right now thanks to sticking it out at home during this pandemic! It's also nice to see the increased welcome offer on the often forgotten little sibling of the World Elite card! So if you aren't ready for the World Elite card (ie not meeting the income requirements) then now might be the time to jump the basic card.
