More details on the pause and future evolution of WestJet Rewards Member Exclusive Fares

Last Friday we brought you the news that WestJet will be pausing their Member Exclusive Fares as of June 25. At the time there were questions on whether it is a pause or if that redemption feature of the program was going to go by the wayside. I can tell you the good news that it is strictly a pause. WestJet has committed that a solution will be in place by the end of 2020 with a better member reward offering and will continue to add more features after that. If you are unfamiliar with WestJet's Member Exclusive Fares they are basically WestJet's fixed grid redemption option. If you are familiar with Aeroplan's Classic Flight rewards chart, Amex's Fixed Points for Travel chart, the RBC Avion chart and so on that is what Member Exclusive Fares are.

The primary reason for wanting to update member exclusives is exactly what is stated on WestJet's site - to improve the process. Right now the booking process for Member Exclusive Fares doesn't follow their typical booking flow as if you were buying a revenue ticket or even just wanting to redeem WestJet dollars towards a revenue ticket.

Improving the process for booking Member Exclusive Fares will make it easier for WestJet to promote them. The uptake on the program was lower than expected and up until now it has been a secondary method of redemption that members mostly learned of via sites like ours. They aren't front and centre on WestJet's site (yes there is a check box right on the home page to show the fares during the process but many people aren't aware of what it means) For the most part the WestJet Rewards program has really focused on the ability to redeem WestJet dollars dollar for dollar. However the future Member Exclusive Fares will be much more integrated into the booking process and in my mind should make WestJet Rewards even more competitive with other frequent flyer programs as these type of reward options can provide outsized value. For example in our post from last Friday the flights between Toronto and Calgary were $347.22 using Member Exclusive Fares versus $459.01 to buy outright.

WestJet's 787 Business Class should become part of Member Exclusive
Fares in the future

The other step with the new Member Exclusive Fares that will make WestJet Rewards that much more competitive is that WestJet wants to make sure they will have set rates for Premium and Business Class redemptions on WestJet flights.

What is an unknown right now is what the pricing will be for reincarnated Member Exclusive Fares. Will they still be a fixed price and be the same as they are now? Will they move to dynamic pricing like Air Canada is planning for North American redemptions? We don't have any details yet from WestJet but I feel like they will keep a very close eye on what Aeroplan will do and adjust accordingly. What I can say is that they will need to be competitive - for example if the sign up bonus for the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is 250 WestJet dollars they'll want the standard North America redemption rates to be around 200 to 250 (100 to 125 WJD each way) to stay in the league of what we see from other airline co-brand credit card offers seeing that those others hover around the short haul redemption to long haul redemption region. In my mind if WestJet keeps a fixed rate redemption in place they can't raise the current prices we are used to by more than 10%. If they did WestJet could be putting the nail in the coffin in terms of competing with Aeroplan and having Member Exclusive Fares becoming the competitive tool they want it to be.

All in all the impression I get from WestJet is that they don't want to mess with the actual premise and value of Member Exclusive Fares. They really do want it to become a major part of the WestJet Rewards program, they want it front and centre and they want it to help them grow the program and the airline.

To close out this post let me say this isn't the only news from WestJet that you can expect over the next few weeks. So stay tuned right here on the Rewards Canada blog as we'll bring you all the details as the news (and offers) get released!

June 23 Update: Amex Shop Small promotion returns tomorrow, potential to make money with Best Western's promotions & Dubai to open up on July 7

American Express' Shop Small promotion returns tomorrow! The ever popular promotion sees cardmembers in select Canadian cities earn a $5 credit or 10x points each time they spend $10 at a participating Shop Small merchant. Those merchants are most of the ones that are not nationwide chains or major retailers. These are your mom and pop shops, local chains etc. The offers will launch on June 24 and in my email it states that I can earn up to $50 in statement credits. That means the $5 or 10x points will be awarded on 10 Shop Small purchases. I'll have a complete post detailing the new promotion tomorrow but in the mean time check out our step by step guide to the American Express Shop Small Program to familiarize yourself with it!

Earlier today I brought you the news that I confirmed with Best Western that you can earn $50 in gift cards with just one stay. I provided some Canadian examples where there is decent value with these promotions but those are unlike the example I used over on FrequentFlyerBonuses. The example in my post actually makes you money! I just randomly chose Memphis (don't ask my why, it was just the first city to pop in my head) and the Best Western Tunica Resort was pricing out at US$38.46 including taxes and it is an eligible rate so you would come ahead by $11.54! Unbelievable! Read more about it here!

Airline Schedule Updates
This will now be a standard feature in our daily update posts as we summarize Canadian operations based on data from RoutesOnline and other sources. Remember that many of these route plans are subject to change and right now they are changing frequently!

KLM has updated their Intercontinental operations for July - they will fly twice weekly to Calgary, three times weekly to Vancouver and once daily service will be offered to both Montreal and Toronto. (Source RoutesOnline)

Dubai has announced they are opening up to International tourists as of July 7. Emirates is flying 5x weekly from Toronto as we speak while there is no news from Air Canada as to when they will restart Dubai flights. Find out more here!
:Tourists must do a PCR test with a maximum validity of four days (96 hours) ahead of the date of departure. They will be required to show proof of not being infected with the virus on arrival at Dubai airports. If they cannot provide proof, they will undergo a PCR test at the airport. All arrivals will be subject to thermal screenings. If a traveler is suspected to have COVID-19 symptoms, Dubai airports have the right to re-test to ensure the tourist is free of the virus. It is mandatory for tourists who test positive for COVID-19 to register their details on the COVID-19 DXB app and isolate themselves at an institutional facility provided by the government for 14 days at their own expense.

Confirmed! You can earn $50 in Best Western Gift Cards with just one stay this summer!

In my post yesterday detailing Best Western Rewards' newest promotion I proposed that it could very well be combined with their other offer that I detailed the week before. I said that based on the terms and conditions you could possibly earn the $25 Best Western Gift Card from the Tanks-A-Lot offer along with the $25 Gift Card for completing one stay at a Best Western hotel. I reached out to Best Western and have confirmation from them that this is the actual case! This means with just one Best Western stay you can earn $50 in Best Western Gift Cards. This gives you the potential to have a big return on just one Best Western stay.

To show the value I grabbed some screen shots of rates available in select cities in Canada on August 11:

All pretty decent rates but look at the one from Montreal! $89.99 (about $107 with taxes) and you can get $50 in travel cards to use for a future stay. That's almost a 50% return on that one stay. No matter where you stay or even what you pay ultimately you can make $50 on that stay.

Remember that you can also buy Best Western Travel Cards in $100 denominations with a 20% bonus right now. So if you buy a C$100 card you'll get that plus a $20 bonus card. The Prince Albert example above would come to around $120 once you take into account taxes and fees. So you pay $100 to buy a Best Western Travel card - you get $120 with the bonus, use it to pay for the stay and then you get the $50 in travel cards for future use. So that $120 stay ends up only costing you $50 if you take into account the $50 you received back.

So how do you get the $50 in travel cards?

First make sure you register for the Best Western Rewards Rush promotion - that is the one where you earn a $25 gift card after one stay. Even if you don't know your plans yet, just register now for it. It is good for stays until September 7. Then make sure to keep the Best Western Tanks-A-Lot promotion up front and centre in your mind. You don't need to register for it but you have to email Best Western after your stay is completed with a receipt showing you bought some gas or charged an electric vehicle within 10 days of your stay and they'll issue you another $25 travel card. This offer is good for stays until August 31 so if you want to make sure you complete one stay complete by the end of August to earn the $50.

You will also earn your regular Best Western Rewards Points on these stays, so if we take the Montreal example you'll earn 890 points if you are Blue member all the up to 1,335 points if you are a Diamond elite member. With an average value of about 0.5 cents that's another $4 to $6 in value. Then if you pay for your stay with a card like the mbna Best Western Mastercard® you'll earn 5 points per dollar on that stay as well, so another 535 points with the Montreal example.

Do be aware that the $25 travel cards from both promotions have an expiry date of December 31, 2020 so you will have to use them up by then for another stay.

Air Canada Aeroplan members receive free access to streaming video content

Starting today and running through to July 22nd Air Canada Aeroplan members will receive free access to video content from various Canadian entertainment providers.
"The carrier is making over 200 titles, including films, shorts and other video from its Canadian partners, available for streaming at no charge until July 22."
I logged into to portal at https://watch.aircanadavideo.com/ - well actually didn't log in simply clicked on the Login  with Aeroplan button:

and it let me access all the videos and I didn't have to input my Aeroplan number at all. I even 'logged out' of the video site and tried again and it didn't require my Aeroplan number so at this time it seems like it is available to anyone.

Once you 'login' you'll be presented with all the video options and you can choose by genre or set categories by Air Canada like "Air Canada Recommends", "Canadian Movies" and more. It pretty much looks like most video streaming services out there:

Aeroplan pegs this as an industry first and it does appears to be so on the video side. I did see an email in my inbox from Qatar Airways on Friday that they have their Oryx One audio playlists on Spotify now as well for free. So between the both you have can have an audio and visual fix for free!

June 22 Update: New Amex offer for The Detox Market, Rewards Canada Podcast on Spotify & most Canadian Airports now requiring face masks

A new Amex offers offer came out at the end of last week. If Spend $100 or more with The Detox Market in store or online (doesn't have to be in one purchase) you can receive a one-time $15 statement credit. In the rwrds.ca household we received it on the Platinum Card and the American Express Cobalt Card. You can find this offer and many more on our Guide to American Express Canada 'Amex Offers'

If you like to listen to the Rewards Canada podcast via Spotify you may have noticed that the two latest episodes from June weren't showing up on the platform. I'm happy to say the issue has been resolved and you can now listen to these and all other episodes on Spotify.

I am also happy to report that it appears that our newsletter is once again making it through to our Cogeco subscribers. There were two weeks that they bounced back to us but this weekend's past newsletter didn't have the issue.

Over the past few weeks we've seen many of Canada's major airports institute a face mask requirement. These requirements are over and above the requirement from Transport Canada requiring it on flights and at security check points. Some like Vancouver seem to be asking politely that people wear them as their wording on the yvr.ca website doesn't state mandatory while Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto specifically state that wearing of masks is mandatory. As do Montreal and Halifax who both made it mandatory as of today (June 22.)
Here are links to each of the major airport's requirements:

WestJet nixes Calgary to Rome route for summer 2020

It came with a lot of hype back in October 2019 and everyone was very excited for it. What was it? It was WestJet announcing a new direct non-stop route between Calgary and Rome on their Boeing 787 Dreamliner. But then Corona Virus happened. And the planned launch of the route this past May was pushed back to July then August and now according to RoutesOnline it has been totally closed off for 2020. In reality this isn't surprising news, as much as WestJet and even some eager travellers had hoped it would happen, the fact of the matter is Italy isn't open to non EU travellers and there is no word as to when they will open.

Sure enough when I checked WestJet while writing this post you can book Calgary to Rome flights but on WestJet's flight to Paris connecting to an Air France flight to Rome:

RoutesOnline does state the service will operate twice weekly as of October 17 but I couldn't find the flights anywhere on WestJet's site. All flights still funneled through Paris.

Let's hope that it does in fact start up in October and if not that we do see the route come to fruition in 2021.

Summary of global hotel systemwide bonus points promotions – June Edition

Here is your monthly update of all the global hotel bonus points promotions that are available. One of the easiest ways to rack up lots of hotel points is to take advantage of these systemwide bonuses that come from many of the big chain programs and also from the lesser known programs. In fact, right now it should be rare for you NOT to earn a bonus. Unless you are staying at a boutique hotel or perhaps an independent hotel most other hotels out there have a bonus. So take advantage of it! These systemwide bonuses simply require you to register beforehand and they do not affect hotel pricing as long as you book a point eligible rate which are most rates out there. Of course booking through a third party site like Expedia or Rocketmiles does not count as most chains only award points on bookings that are made directly with them. Without further ado here are all the current promotions that are available to everyone:

Receive a $25 Best Western Gift Card when you complete one stay in Canada, the U.S or Caribbean by September 7

Best Western has now launched their primary stay offer for summer 2020! Two weeks we let you know about it in our post Best Western’s upcoming summer promotions. The first offer Tanks-A-Lot went live last week and provides BW Rewards members with a $25 Best Western Travel Card after they complete 1 stay at a Best Western Hotel and submit a receipt showing a purchase of $10 (C$/US$) or more of gasoline or electric vehicle charging charges. Now we have the second offer which went live today and it also awards a $25 Best Western Gift Card! Simply register for the offer and complete one stay at any Best Western branded hotel in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean to receive a $25 Best Western Gift card. Like the Tanks-A-Lot offer this one can only be earned once but you can simply take advantage of both via two stays or possibly one. If I read the terms and conditions correctly for both offers it appears that it could be possible to earn both promotion’s $25 travel cards in one stay. There is nothing stating that they cannot be combined and since you have to register for this one and then for Tanks-A-Lot you have to send in a receipt but not register it is feasible that you could earn $50 in travel cards with just one stay. The travel card that you earn with this promotion must be used by December 31, 2020 just like the one you can earn from Tanks-A-Lot.
