A closer look at the new American Express Business Edge™ Card

This post was sponsored by Amex Bank of Canada. The views and opinions expressed in this blog, however, are purely my own.

Back on October 16 American Express shook up the small business credit card market with the launch of their new American Express Business Edge Card. This small business card integrates what has worked well with Amex's personal cards to offer it to the small business market. The primary factor that is makes this card stand out is the points earning potential. It has accelerated earn rates, a generous welcome bonus and an ongoing monthly bonus for meeting a minimum spend.

American Express was smart to bring over some of their personal card features, namely the American Express Cobalt Card to the small business side. You may ask why and the answer to that question comes on the rewards. Too often businesses have relied on personal credit cards - I can't count how many times back in the day when I worked in procurement in the Oil & Gas Industry where salespeople bought lunch, coffee, etc. with their personal cards while pitching their products. There were several reasons for this, some small businesses consider letting their sales people use their own personal cards as an unwritten bonus - they get their salary, their commission and they get to keep the points earned on those personal cards all the while submitting the expense to the company thereby getting those points for free. And the other reason - most small business credit cards in Canada aren't very rewarding when compared to all the personal card options in the market.

Thankfully, that has changed now with the introduction of the American Express Business Edge Card. It is the first business card that is under the Select Tier within the Membership Rewards program, and the second card overall from American Express that is within the Select Tier (after the Cobalt Card). The card has rich value with a generous welcome bonus and strong points earning potential all the while providing the benefits and redemption options we have become accustomed to from American Express. Add in an extremely reasonable annual fee, that is only charged on the primary card (all supplementary cards are offered at no charge) and you have a winning combination for a small business card.

For the welcome bonus, not only do you get bonus points for getting the card and completing a minimum spend within three months - you will also get additional bonus points if you can spend a set amount on the card each month. All told the card can give you 42,000 bonus Membership Rewards points (within the Select Tier) in the first year of cardmembership.

Welcome Bonus
In your first year as a new Business Edge Cardmember, you can earn 30,000 Membership Rewards points when you charge $5,000 in purchases to your Card in your first three months of Cardmembership, and an additional 1,000 points each month that you spend $3,000. This could add up to 42,000 bonus points in a year.

Ongoing Monthly Bonus
The 1,000 bonus points earned each month is a continuous bonus and is awarded to you for the life of the card as long as you hit that $3,000 in monthly spending.

Annual Fee
$99

Supplementary Cards: No annual fee

Earning
Earn 3 times the points for Card purchases on eligible business essentials including:

•    3X the points on Eats & Drinks
•    3X the points on Rides & Gas
•    3X the points on Office Supplies & Electronics

Up to a maximum of 75,000 points, and then earn 1X the points on all other purchases.

Want to know which restaurants and other bars or eateries will earn you those 3x points? Check out our American Express Confirmed Multiplier Locations feature that the Rewards Canada community has been so great in contributing to!

As mentioned above, you will rewarded with 1,000 bonus points each month you have $3,000 in spending on the card.

Redeeming
•    Get choice and flexibility by using points for purchases or redeeming them for a wide range of travel, dining, entertainment and retail rewards options.
•    Use points to book travel within Canada or anywhere in the world with American Express Travel.
•    Redeem points for statement credits to offset any eligible purchase charged to your Card.
•    Shop with Points at Amazon.ca.
•    Use points for a wide range of gift cards and merchandise.

Travel, of course, is one of the most sought after rewards from credit cards and American Express does travel rewards well. They have multiple options in Membership Rewards that are as follows:

Use Points for Purchases

Redeem points for statement credits to offset any eligible purchase charged to the card.  The  redemption rate values at 1 cent per point which means the Business Edge card has a 1 to 3% rate of return when you redeem points for purchases (purchases that earn 3 points = 3% return, purchases that earn 1 point = 1%)
  • Use Points for Purchases (Travel): 1,000 points = $10 credit
  • Use Points for Purchases (Non-Travel): 1,000 points = $10 credit
Using your points to offset eligible travel purchases for statement credits is great for those looking for the utmost flexibility in using points for travel. You get to book the flights that are best for you, from the carrier you want, right from the airline’s website, a travel agent or any online travel portal. It even covers non-air travel, such as car rentals, hotels or even all inclusive vacation packages.

Book your hotel via the hotel's website, a cruise via a travel agent or even an all-inclusive vacation, and you can redeem your Membership Rewards points for it all.  All you have to do is charge the travel to any Membership Rewards earning American Express Card and when the charge shows up, redeem your points against it at a rate of 1,000 points for a $10 statement credit. The great thing with Membership Rewards is that you can continue to fund your trip with points even after it's over, since American Express allows you to redeem for a charge up to 12 months after it gets posted to your account.

Fixed Points Travel Program

The Fixed Points Travel Program is a take on traditional reward flights from frequent flyer programs. That is, you use a set amount of points to travel within, or to, certain regions without typically worrying about the price.

Booking flights using fixed points can come handy, especially during peak seasons when market fares are quite high. American Express' Fixed Points Travel Program doesn’t limit specific airlines you need to book with. You can literally fly any airline, any time to any destination!

This provides a lot more flexibility than your traditional reward program, where typically the biggest complaint is a lack of flight availability!

Here are the points grids from Amex’s Fixed Point Travel Program:

Depending on how you earn your points with the American Express Business Edge Card it could mean you can fly for as little as $5,000 in spending. Take the 3 points per dollar for $5,000 and you have 15,000 points which are enough to redeem for short haul popular routes.

Related: A closer look at the Membership Rewards Fixed Points Travel program

Converting points to hotel loyalty programs
The Membership Rewards Select Tier allows you to convert your points to other loyalty programs, namely hotel programs. Those are Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy™. The conversion ratio from MR Select to Marriott is 1,000 points = 1,200 points which means the 3 points per dollar this card earns equates to 3.6 Marriott Bonvoy™ points for every dollar spent. Max out at the 75,000 points annually and you are looking at 90,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per year. That's a pretty decent Marriott Bonvoy points earn and considering we value Marriott Bonvoy points at no less than 1 cent a piece that's $900 in value right there!

Related:  Step by step guide to converting points from your American Express Card to Marriott Bonvoy

Between the welcome bonus and the accelerated earn rates the American Express Business Edge Card has stormed onto the market as one of the most rewarding small business cards in Canada. Many of the other cards in this space don't even come close to earning valuable points like this card does. Throw in those 42,000 bonus points in the first year as well and you can see this card is a winner!

Home Trust Preferred Visa to stop awarding cash back on foreign currency transactions

Thanks to Rewards Canada reader Mike S. for alerting us on Facebook about this upcoming change to the Home Trust Preferred Visa Card.

As of January 1, 2020 the Home Trust Preferred Visa card will no longer award cash back on foreign currency transactions however it will continue to offer no foreign transaction fees. The card achieved some popularity in the rewards world by being an early adopter in the field of no foreign transaction fees and awarding 1% cash back on all eligible purchases - including those made in a foreign currency. Looks like they may feeling the pinch and have decided that not charging the foreign transaction fee is enough and need that 1% in their coffers.

Related: No Foreign Transaction Fee Credit Cards for Canadians

There aren't many no annual fee card options in the No FX Fee market which leads me to believe Home Trust thinks they can keep their small portion of market share. I don't think this will be the case - you have the Rogers/Fido portfolio of no annual fee cards, Brim has a no annual fee card and you also have the Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard as competitive options to this card. Brim and Rogers/Fido come out ahead of the Home Trust in terms of net return on foreign transactions while the Amazon card equals Home Trust in that it does charge 2.5% for foreign currency purchases but rewards you with 2.5% back essentially nullifying the FX fee.

Related: The Ultimate No Foreign Transaction Fee Credit Card Portfolio

Home Trust has already updated their website to state the card does not earn cash back rewards on foreign transactions - even though it isn't January yet.

Excerpt from the card T&C's:
Cash advances, balance transfers, interest, fees and foreign transactions (including online purchases in foreign currencies) are not eligible for CashBack Rewards.

The reason it is probably up on the website already however is that applications and approvals for the Home Trust Visa aren't a quick process. This saves them the hassle of having lots of people complain who thought they might be applying for a card that offers 1% back on transactions that have No FX fee.

All in all not a welcome change for this card and for those who have it but in the grand scheme of things I don't see it as that huge of deal of either due to this card's overall small share of the market.

[OFFER EXPIRED] The American Express® AIR MILES®* Platinum Credit Card's welcome offer of up to 3,500 AIR MILES®* Bonus Miles provides big time value

This post was sponsored by Amex Bank of Canada. The views, opinions, Mile calculation and valuation expressed in this blog, however, are my own. American Express is not responsible for maintaining or monitoring the accuracy of information on this website.

THIS OFFER IS NOW EXPIRED - PLEASE SEE THE CARD DETAILS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST FOR THE MOST CURRENT OFFER BEING FEATURED.

We've had a good amount of coverage on our site about the newly enhanced American Express® AIR MILES®* Platinum Credit Card and we continue that coverage with a closer look at what the new welcome offer and enhancements to the Card provide.

To recap, this is the current limited time welcome offer on the Card:
  • New American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card Cardmembers, earn a welcome bonus of up to 3,500 AIR MILES®* Bonus Miles – here’s how:
  • Earn 1,700 Bonus Miles when you charge a total of $1,500 in purchases to your Card in the first 3 months of Cardmembership.
  • Earn up to 1,800 Bonus Miles - In your first 6 monthly billing periods as a new American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card Cardmember, you can earn 150 Miles for every $500 you spend in purchases in each monthly billing period (up to a maximum of 300 Miles per monthly billing period). Welcome bonus offers end January 20, 2020.
This two week old offer is getting a lot of attention as it is one of the highest sign up bonuses seen on an AIR MILES co-brand Credit Card. The only other comparable Welcome Offer is on the American Express AIR MILES Reserve Credit Card. Still for most however the American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card is the one have. Whether you are big time AIR MILES Collector or even have the program as a secondary one, this Card should be a serious contender for space in your wallet thanks to its greatly enhanced AIR MILES Reward Miles earning.

The new earn rates are the best of any AIR MILES Cards and they are as follows:
  • 1 Mile for every $5 in Card purchases, up to $30,000 annually, on eligible food and drinks (including stand-alone grocery stores, restaurants and coffee shops) and eligible gas and transit (including local commuter transportation, ridesharing services and taxis) in Canada
  • 1 Mile for every $10 in Card purchases everywhere else
Before these changes the Card earned 1 Mile for every $10 spent at AIR MILES Partners and at other eligible grocery stores, gas stations, and drugstores in Canada and then 1 Mile for every $15 everywhere else. As you can see you are now earning double the Miles on a lot of those purchases with the 1 Mile for every $5 on food & drinks and gas & transit. These are the same categories as the American Express Cobalt Card so you can utilize our Confirmed Cobalt Multipliers page to see where you'll earn the 1 Mile for every $5 on food, drinks, transit and gas. (Please note that liquor board purchases like LCBO do not count for the drinks category). Yes I think it is time we rename that page as the Confirmed American Express Multipliers page! Outside of those bonus categories all other purchases will earn 1 Mile for every $10 - not just purchases from AIR MILES Partners, grocery stores etc. as seen before. The 1 Mile for every $5 is capped for $30,000 in spending annually just as we see on the American Express Cobalt Card. This means you can earn 6,000 AIR MILES each year for that $30,000 in spending.

The revamp of the Card also sees the addition of the Annual Travel Redemption Benefit:
  • Annual Travel Redemption Benefit – Once per calendar year, when an eligible Cardmember uses Dream Miles with the AIR MILES Reward Program to book their first single flight or package vacation through airmiles.ca or vacations.airmiles.ca, they can get Bonus Miles equivalent to 25% of the net number of Miles used (up to a maximum of 750 Bonus Miles)
This reads just as it is sound, you'll get Miles back for your first flight or package vacation each year that is 25% of the net number of Miles you redeem you redeem, up to 750 Miles. So let's take a look at some redemption options you could utilize with the current welcome offer on the Card:

Using the Reward Miles for flights:

If you are based in Ontario here is AIR MILES' map of where 3,000 Miles will take you in the low season and high season:
Low season - Ontario
High season - Ontario
And for those in British Columbia for both low and high season:
Low season - B.C.
High season - B.C.

The above rates are for one ticket, if you are looking for two people to travel the regions available do shrink a bit. Here's B.C. during low season for two travellers at a maximum of 1,700 Miles each:
Low season regions for 2 travellers from B.C.

Here is an example of 2 person booking between Vancouver and Portland. Normally this is 1,300 miles per person (2,600 for 2) so it is well within the range of the welcome bonus on the card. As you can see however, at the time of researching this post there was a special for AIR MILES Gold Card Members that offers 15% off the amount of miles required for this redemption option:
and the lowest priced tickets from Air Canada for the same flights:

You can see that with this option I'd be redeeming 2210 miles to save $518.74 on the reservation. That means I'd be getting a return of 23.4 cents per mile - that's a huge value for AIR MILES Reward Miles. Then if you take the 25% discount in miles if this is your first redemption of the year you are looking at only using 1,658 miles which works out to 31 cents per mile! Of course this is taking into account that you are a Gold member as well. Still if you are just a base member your 2,600 miles for $518.74 is worth ~20 cents per mile, well above our standard 11 to 15 cents per mile. Factor in the 25% discount from the American Express AIR MILES Platinum Credit Card's Annual Travel Redemption Benefit and we have 26.6 cents per mile value. This means that the welcome bonus of 3,500 miles that comes with the Card could be worth as much as $1,085 if you can get a redemption at the 31 cents per mile valuation. That's huge.

Using the Reward Miles for All inclusive vacations

You can also use the 3,500 miles earned on the Card towards all inclusive package vacations that are booked via airmiles.ca or vacations.airmiles.ca, and take advantage of the 25% redemption discount since it works on these bookings as (once again only if it is your first booking of the year). Package vacations work a little differently than flights as you redeem a set amount of Reward Miles to receive a discount on the package. The rate at the time of posting is 909 miles to receive $100 off. That means you could get $300 off a package vacation with the 3,500 welcome bonus and have miles left over.

You would redeem 2,727 miles to receive $300 of any vacation package but then if it is your first redemption you'll get 682 miles back after the redemption which means you have effectively redeemed 2045 miles for the $300 credit or close to 15 cents per mile.

To sum it up

As you can see from the above examples the new welcome bonus offer for the American Express AIR MILES Platinum Card can provide some amazing value. And they don't even take into account the accelerated earning on the card that you'll be achieving to reach the spend required to earn the complete welcome bonus. In fact, if you can make the $1,000 per month spending that is required to earn the 300 bonus miles per month in the accelerated category for 6 months you are looking at 1,200 miles alone on that spend. This means that at the end of 6 months you could easily be at 4,700 AIR MILES Reward Miles.  All in all, this revamped Card and limited welcome offer when combined make for a very strong contender in our market right now.

December 18 Update: The top credit cards for everyday non-category bonus spending, Sun Country Airlines to fly Vancouver-Minneapolis & a dozen new bonuses

Today we released another feature on the main Rewards Canada website covering The top credit cards for everyday non-category bonus spending.
A lot of the focus on Rewards Canada is about credit cards as they are the easiest and number one way to earn loyalty points and miles in Canada. When it comes to spending your hard earned money on credit cards most of what we discuss revolves around the category bonuses awarded on those cards. Five times points this, three times points that but what about non-category bonus spending? Which cards stand out when it comes to your spending outside of things like groceries, gas, travel and other typical categories that are bonused? That's the focus of this feature and hopefully it can help you out especially if you are someone who does have a lot of spend on your card(s) that don't fall into category bonuses.
Check out the feature here!

Sun Country Airlines, a U.S. based low cost carrier announced that they will start flying from Vancouver. Starting in May 2020 the airline will fly between Vancouver and Minneapolis twice per week. The airline has been seen in Canada before however not on a scheduled basis as they have operated some charter flights before out of Calgary, Edmonton and other Canadian cities. They do have their own loyalty program called Sun Country Rewards (if you are old like me, you may remember it as UFly Rewards) (Source Routesonline) Image via Sun Country
