The Rewards Canada community has done it once again with some
information that we want to pass along to our
readers! Kent B. let us know that he was unable to book travel to Cuba
via ExpediaForTD on his
TD First Class Visa Infinite Card.
He tried booking online and also called in but was told it was not
possible. Unfortunately this means that if you want to book Cuba travel
on that card you have to go to another supplier and forego the 9 points
you would earn for booking via ExpediaForTD and settle for the base 3
points per dollar for booking somewhere else. I would go so far to
assume this is the same for redeeming points for Cuba travel - you won't
be able to do so via ExpediaForTD and you'll have to book somewhere
else at a redemption rate that provides less value. This all appears to
be tied into Expedia settling with U.S. Government earlier this year for
potentially violating U.S. sanctions against Cuba. (Source

Naturally I wanted to check other suppliers whose parent company is
based in the U.S., namely American Express and the same holds true for
them - Cuba doesn't show up on their travel booking site. This means you can't
take advantage of something like their Fixed Points Travel program to
book Cuba flights. Seeing how Cuba is very popular for Canadian
travellers this can and should be something you'll definitely want to
take into consideration, especially on the TD card since it really
affects earning while on the Amex card it isn't as doesn't really matter where you book
to earn or redeem outside of the Fixed Points Travel program since the points earning/redeeming doesn't change. I believe
most other credit card issuers don't use travel suppliers that are
American but you could always call a card issuer first to ask this question before making a decision to sign up for one with the idea of either
earning a lot of points or redeeming points for travel to Cuba.
WestJet announced a new destination yesterday for
the upcoming winter. Starting on December 15th they will fly once weekly
between Toronto and Roatan, Honduras. The flights will run until
