Further details to the combination of the Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest and Ritz-Carlton Rewards Programs

On Monday we brought you the majority of the details of the unification of the Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest and Ritz-Carlton Rewards programs. Some details were not provided to us in advance which are now on Marriott's website that outlines everything.
Sarah McLaughlin at the Marriott announcement
event at the Ritz-Carlton Toronto on Monday
First off, the award night category chart that was provided to us by Marriott last week was tweaked by the time the announcement came out and it appears that newer version of the chart only made it to the U.S. bloggers beforehand. We updated the original post with the new chart but here it is as well:
Another concern is how often will standard pricing be available for awards or will all hotels try to price at Peak pricing. According the Head for Points, they asked the question at the U.K. press conference and it doesn't look too bad if this is what they go with:
"The plan is that hotels will approximately set 20% of their days as peak, 20% as off-peak and 60% as standard."
I also read somewhere that Marriott is exploring what award rates will be applied for the Suite only hotels, ultra-luxury resorts etc. These are the ones from Starwood that were allowed to charge more than what was stated on the award chart. It does appear that select locations will be able to move away from the award chart and will be able to charge more. We should know sometime in June where these and in fact all hotels will fall into in the new award chart.

We also have the details now on how your Elite Status will line up in the new program. Here it is for Marriott Rewards members:
And for Starwood Preferred Guest members:

Marriott Gold members should be excited as you are getting bumped up a level come August for at least the remainder of the elite year. The news is mixed about those who have SPG Gold from the Platinum Card from American Express that of course was then matched to Marriott Gold. Some Marriott reps state that you'll be Platinum as of August (per the new elite tiers) however David Flueck told The Points Guy this is not the case - matched SPG Gold status will remain at Gold in the new program. David is the point man in all this news and we would tend to go with what he has to say so this is definitely not the news many Platinum Card holders were wanting. As you can see after August the benefits for the new Gold level have been downgraded from the current offering. No more lounge access, no more breakfast, and only a 2pm late check out.

One question that also wasn't answered prior to the announcement but that we know of now are the Lifetime Elite Status requirements, benefits etc.:
Starting in August, you’ll be able to qualify instantly for one of our three Lifetime tiers:
Lifetime Silver Elite, Lifetime Gold Elite and Lifetime Platinum Elite.

You can qualify for Lifetime status based on your combined Rewards and SPG nights and Elite years. If you achieved Elite status in both SPG and Rewards in one year, you’ll receive credit for two Elite years. You can also qualify via the existing criteria through December 31, 2018. When your current Elite status is higher than your Lifetime status, you’ll receive the higher-status benefits for that year.

And if you’ve previously achieved Lifetime Elite status in Rewards or SPG, you will have that Lifetime Elite status in the new program.

If you currently have lifetime Status with Marriott here is what your new Lifetime status will be come August
If you have SPG lifetime status here is how it will map out in the new program:

I know the latter for SPG members with lots of nights will bring disappointment as there is no opportunity for lifetime Platinum Premier, see this comment on our main post from Monday:

1,100 nights and you are not being recognized for it? Seems like a call to Marriott is in order for Mark to see if Marriott will bend the rules and award Platinum Premier on case by case basis.

The Crossover Rewards program that SPG runs with Delta SkyMiles will come to an end on July15 while the programs with China Eastern and Emirates will continue to run but only for those members who have already registered for them.

Lucky at One Mile at a Time also reports that multiple room bookings will follow Marriott's policy come August. That is you'll earn elite credit only on one room and points for up to three rooms. Starwood was more generous in this regard that you could earn both elite credit and points for up to three rooms. This is one that hits home personally as over the past year or so our family has begun to book two rooms whenever possible for our travels so only earning elite credit on one is not something we were hoping for.

Let us know what you think and if you have any other unanswered questions - we'll try to answer them for you or get the answer from Marriott!

Ouch! No more Starpoints bonus for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express - Statement credits instead

Hot on the heels of yesterday's Marriott and SPG announcement comes this change to the sign up offer for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express and it is surprising! They have done away, for the time being, with bonus Starpoints for getting the card! We have seen 15,000, 20,000 and 25,000 points being offered on this card in the past (even until tomorrow you can get 25,000 if you had the Chase Marriott Visa card) but it is unheard of for a major loyalty program with a premium card to totally do away with sign up bonus that rewards you with the currency of the loyalty program. Instead of points, you'll get a $100 statement credit if you spend $1,500 on the card in the first three months and a $150 statement credit if you spend $200 or more at Marriott or Starwood Hotels within the first six months of having the card.

This is significantly less value for the sign up bonus, the previous 20,000 Starpoint bonus we valued at well over $400 and now that is almost cut in half (and you still have to pay the annual fee). I'm wondering where this initiative came from? Is Marriott trying to curb how many points are issued? It does seem that Marriott is definitely trying to push cardholders to be loyal by actually staying at their hotels with the statement credit and not utilizing the Starpoints for converting to airlines, which in reality is why a lot of people did get this card. I understand this from a business perspective but from a consumer perspective to not offer any welcome points for a major program on a major credit card seems counter intuitive.

Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest come together with the announcement of one set of benefits

There have been lots of rumours and some spoilers floating around the frequent traveller blogs and forums about today's announcement from Marriott International. Some of those rumours are true while some others are not.  Invites went out to select people including ourselves for the multiple events running tonight around the world including the Ritz-Carlton Toronto which will see Rewards Canada's Jeff Fredericks attending and reporting back later! It all surrounds the combination of Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest. Marriott is giving us some lead time before it happens this August so that we can all get ready for the changes, customers and employees alike for the newly combined program. As is expected there will be some give and take with the unification of the two loyalty programs but in general the give side seems to win out!
Be sure to also read these follow up posts:
Further details to the combination of the Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest and Ritz-Carlton Rewards Programs

Ouch! No more Starpoints bonus for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express - Statement credits instead
Now onto to the good news, the press release that is coming out the same time as this post lists a lot of the details of the newly unified program but not all. Last week I had a chance to interview David Flueck, Senior Vice President of Global Loyalty, Marriott International, about all the changes and he revealed even more details to us. What follows is a combination of everything we know from the press release, the media details provided to us by Marriott and from our interview with David.

Unification of three programs
First off, David said they are thrilled to one program with one set of benefits and we have to say that we are thrilled as well! The combination of the three programs will see one program with 110 million members (yes pretty much 4x the population of Canada) who will be able to seamlessly book, earn and redeem at over 6,500 hotels Worldwide from 29 brands in 127 countries. Even though it is one unified program, the three separate programs will continue to run under this one set of unified benefits until the new name for the program is released sometime in 2019. This means you will continue to use Marriott.com, the Marriott app, Ritz-Carlton.com, SPG.com, the SPG app and all associated booking channels until that point but all of the channels will show the entire portfolio of 6,500+ hotels. Yes that's right, you can book a J.W. Marriott on SPG.com if you like.

What happens to my Starpoints?
This will be just as we have become accustomed to since Marriott bought Starwood and allowed you to link your SPG and Marriott Rewards accounts in that you'll get 3 Marriott Rewards points for every Starpoint you have. Come August it means whatever Starpoints you have will be tripled into the unified program.

Earning Points
Members from all three programs will earn ten points for every dollar spent at all brands except for Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites and Element which will be five points per every dollar spent. With bonuses, elite members will earn even more for stays, see the chart below. In August, all members will begin earning points for food and beverage and qualifying incidentals on their folio, rather than just the room rate.  David stated that on average, members will earn 20% more points per dollar spent then they currently do. That number most likely comes from the higher earn rate that will be seen at Starwood Hotels (currently base level is 2 Starpoints per dollar which equates to 6 points) and for Marriott Rewards members earning on those non room rate charges. Once earned you will still be able to transfer points between accounts for those who live at the same address.

Elite Status
First off there were some rumours of multiple elite levels having a spend requirement and David clarified those were not true. It is only the Platinum Premier 100 night Ambassador level that includes a spend requirement. The combined program will have five elite levels over and above the base level. Stay 10 nights in a year and Silver status is yours, 25 earns you Gold, 50 for Platinum while 75 gets you Platinum Premier. Surpass 100 nights and have $20,000 in spend and you'll have Platinum Premier Ambassador status. Lifetime status members will continue to have their status recognized.
The breakfast offering for Platinum and Platinum Premier members will be expanded to 23 participating brands, including Courtyard, AC Hotels by Marriott, Protea and Moxy, as well as all resorts. For certain brands, members will receive free breakfast or an on-property food and beverage credit for breakfast or other dining options.

Redeeming Points
There will be one award chart for all the hotel brands across the three chains. The new award chart sees eight categories ranging from a low of 7,500 points to a maximum of 85,000 points for a standard one night redemption. This chart will be in place come this August and all redemptions will be at the standard level for the remainder of the year. Then sometime in 2019 they will be adding Peak and Off-Peak awards that will cost 20% more or 20% less than the standard redemption amount. All of this can be seen in the chart below (we have also added the old charts for comparison) There will not be any dynamic pricing that surfaced in the rumours over the past week however others were correct with the Peak and Off-Peak rewards. What we don't know today is what categories all the 6,500 hotels will fall into as the old Marriott Rewards chart had 9 categories, Ritz-Carlton had 5 tiers and SPG had 7 categories. They will continue to offer no black out dates for points redemptions at all their hotels and also continue with the 5th night free benefit.

UPDATE: April 16 10:41PM MT
Marriott provided us initially with an award chart that apparently was modified between last week and today but they forgot to send us the new one. Thanks to @barrychoi for catching this for us and letting me know! Here is the correct chart:

The current SPG chart which will disappear in August
Outside of the select Starwood locations that can charge up to 140,000 Starpoints per night we can see that many category 7 hotels should be cheaper come August as they will only be 60,000 points and potentially move up to 85,000 when category 8 is released. We don't know at this time what those select 'don't have to abide by the award chart' Starwood locations will be charging - will they be following the chart or will they be able to continue to charge more?

The current Marriott Rewards chart which will disappear in August
This is where we may possibly see the worst news. Seeing that the best of the best Marriott Hotels are only 45,000 points right now there is a good possibility some of them will jump to 50,000, 60,000 or even 85,000 points for one standard night. Not to mention when Peak pricing kicks in they'll be a lot more than that.

The current Ritz-Carlton Rewards chart which will disappear in August
Even the Ritz-Carlton side could potentially see some increases when that 85,000 point level kicks in. For the remainder of 2018 however you'll be able to get those top end Ritz locations for 10,000 points less since the new chart peaks at 60,000 for this year.

What was explained to me by David is that more hotels will actually be moving down in points cost than up. He promises there is lots of good news in the new chart and what categories hotels will fall into. One could expect the top end Ritz-Carlton locations to be at that top 60,000 point level.

Airline Transfers
Great news here! Marriott has kept the much coveted SPG airline transfer ratios and by combining the two programs there will be many more airlines (over 40) to choose from one account owning to the fact they did have some different airline partners. The transfer rate to most airlines will be 3 points to one mile (the same as the old SPG 1:1 since Starpoints convert 1:3 to the new program) They are also retaining the bonus for transferring more points. This means if you transfer 60,000 Points to airline miles they will throw in an additional 15,000 points so that you get 25,000 airline miles. So 60,000 points gets you 25,000 miles which is the same as the old SPG 20,000 points to get 25,000 miles.

Hotel + Air Packages
There is no info on Marriott's very popular Hotel+Air packages in the press release or media materials but David did tell me that they will continue. We'll have to wait to see what the redemption rates will look like with the new categories and of course the different airline redemption rates over Marriott Rewards.

Canadian Credit Card
As most of you know, the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa card left our market this past March  leaving only the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express (and it's business brethren). This card will continue on indefinitely and when the new unified benefits launch it will automatically switch the points earning over to 3 points per dollar spent and possibly 6 points per dollar for stays at Marriott and Starwood locations should Amex choose to extend that promotional offer.

The card will change eventually though based on this statement in the U.S. version of their press release:
Finally, we will be announcing changes to cobrand cards in Canada, Japan, The United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates at a later date
I do have one concern that hopefully doesn't transpire. The new luxury version of the SPG Amex in the States will only offer 2 points per dollar on most purchases and I am scared that might be the eventual base earn rate on all Starwood cards including ours here in Canada. Granted the new luxury has a bunch of other benefits including 6 points at hotels, 3 on airfare and U.S. restaurants plus $300 annually in statement credits for on-property purchases, a free night award up to 50,000 points, automatic Gold elite status, a $100 fee credit for Global Entry, Priority Pass Select membership and more. Perhaps the lower earn on most purchases with the luxury card is the compromise for all the other benefits. Fingers crossed that's the case and fingers crossed that maybe we'll get a luxury card too!

I did ask David if they were actively pursuing a new partner in Canada to replace Chase so that Marriott would have a Visa or Mastercard option to compliment the Amex portfolio and he said they are but there is no news on that front yet.

Marriott & SPG Moments
Marriott will be growing the experiential offers they provide from Marriott Rewards and SPG Moments. The 110,000 new Moments experiences in 1,000 destinations can be purchased with cash and are in addition to the 8,000 exclusive, member experiences that only can be redeemed with points on Marriott Rewards Moments and SPG Moments.  In the future, all Moments experiences will be available to be redeemed with points.

Marriott is also announcing Moments Live, a collection of premiere musical and culinary events powered by Marriott’s partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG) and its newest partnership with LITV Entertainment Group. The series kicks off with a selection of:
  • VIP access and exclusive performances throughout Keith Urban’s recently announced Graffiti U World Tour.
  • Access to intimate, thoughtfully crafted events with superstar chefs and well-known musicians in picturesque settings.
  • Exclusive, VIP access to music and culinary themed events in Napa Valley, such as private festivals Live In The Vineyard and Live In The Vineyard Goes Country.
In the coming months, Marriott will provide members with information about how and when in August they can begin combining their loyalty accounts.

Final thoughts
The hotel portfolio that you will be able to seamlessly book, stay, earn and redeem at is pretty extraordinary. You will have over 350 luxury hotels, 150 beach front hotels and almost 350 over water bungalows not to mention every other type of option from small town hotels, big city high rises and more. Can't complain about that and considering they are continuing with the black out date rule you may have some good chances at scoring some amazing stays with this program.

To sum it all up, you are really get the best of both of the big programs in the new program. The only unknowns at this time are what categories the hotels will fall into in the new chart and what the air+hotel packages will look like. Those could make or break the good news but we have faith in what David told us that overall the program is getting richer and more hotels will go down in categories than up. It really looks like Marriott has done their homework and listened to members of Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest - and more so to the latter as it has been the SPG members who have been the most vocal and most worried about what could happen to one of the best programs out there.

Now let's hear from you, tell us what you think about today's news in the comments below!

Hotel Review: San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront

The Rewards Canada family was in need of a hotel near SFO for a quick overnight stay to catch a flight in the morning. We wanted something close, not crazy expensive and of course a hotel where status could get us something extra. It seems like most of the hotels around the airport get average reviews with nothing really outstanding, so having Platinum status with Marriott we decided on the San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront since it was close and has a M Club lounge. By having the lounge it made for an easy breakfast option when not having too much time in the morning before our flight.

Walking into the hotel it may seem pretty nice but one thing you learn is that you can’t judge how good it is by its lobby or entrance area. Some hotels can have amazing public spaces and the rooms will be well.... not that amazing. Such is the case here! The check in area was crazy busy with quite a long line but luckily the elite line only had three people waiting in it. We had done a mobile check in and requested a mobile key but that never made it to our phone. The lady working the elite desk was pleasant, told us we were upgraded to a concierge level room however she never asked what Platinum amenity we wanted. Per Marriott’s own terms and conditions we are to be provided with a $100 credit for them not asking. When I called down and requested the $100 credit they said we selected points which wasn’t the case at all. We have brought this up directly with Marriott via Twitter and we eventually did get the credit after having to reach out several times.

As well when doing the mobile check in you can put in additional requests and in this case we requested two additional duvets but those weren’t waiting for us in the room. I had to call down for those and also ask for more bath towels since the room only had two for the four of us. This has got to be one of my biggest pet peeves with so many hotels, not just this hotel! When you book a room you are asked how many guests there are per room so they should make sure it is stocked accordingly.  I would have to say 75% of the time the number of bath towels do not match the number of people on the booking.

The room itself was OK and the best part about it was a little surprise waiting for us in the toilet! Not sure if housekeeping was overwhelmed and rushing their room cleaning but they sure missed that! Speaking of the toilet, the toilet paper holder didn’t hold the roll well and it pretty much fell off every time it was used. In all honesty I was surprised the room was considered concierge level.

Here are a few shots of the room, I didn't take too many as we were pretty tired and just wanted to get to bed!

The views from this room however are an avgeek's dream as it faced onto the waterfront and the parallel approach for runways 28R and 28L.

The M Club lounge is on the main floor at the end of the lobby and was very busy when we went in for breakfast. We did take the last four seat area in the lounge as all the other possibly tables for 4 people were already occupied. The food options were decent with a wide selection of cold and hot options including some breakfast tacos that our oldest daughter really enjoyed.

Maybe we've been spoiled by some of the other Marriott hotels we have stayed at and were expecting similar quality to those as all four of us were a little disappointed in the hotel. We had it booked for our transit back to Calgary but cancelled that booking and decided we would try out the Aloft hotel a few blocks away. Watch for that review to come soon!

Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for April

Here are the Rewards Canada Top 5 Credit Card Sign Up offers for the month of April! This is not a 'best' credit card list like our Top Travel Rewards Credit Card rankings but instead a look at cards that have very good acquisition (sign up) offers. As always when choosing a card you should always take other factors into account other than the just sign up bonus, but when most or all of these cards are first year free, they can and do pay off even when you grab them strictly for the sign up rewards. In fact all of the cards on this list are first year free so you can try them out at no cost and decide later on if the card is right for you. All the while you earn the sign up bonus which can be used to subsidize your travels!

No change this month in the cards in this Top 5 list but you should know that this is the last month that you can get the really good RBC Avion offer. Read more about that offer here.

Here are our top 5 credit card sign up offers for April (in alphabetical order)
BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard - 3,000 Miles  (Apply here)
The best ever sign up bonus for an AIR MILES co-branded card continues to be in the Top 5 sign up list thanks to its 3,000 miles sign up bonus (worth ~$300 or more) and no annual fee in the first year! Even if you aren't a fan of AIR MILES the fact you can get 3,000 miles and them use them as cash rewards for no cost to you should be enough to go out and get this card.

BMO Rewards Mastercard- 20,000 Points  (Apply here)
Included in the revamped BMO Rewards program that essentially sees the program devalued the BMO Rewards Mastercard has never been on this list before. It now makes the list because it actually has a limited time sign up bonus and the card has no annual fee so these 20,000 points (worth ~$142) come to you at no charge.  10,000 points are awarded after the 1st purchase and then 10,000 more if you can hit $1,000 in spending in the first three months.

BMO BMO Rewards World Elite Mastercard- 35,000 Points  (Apply here)
Revamped on January 15th with a reward program that is less rewards on your day to day spend the card still graces this list thanks to its sign bonus and first year free offer. The card now offer a 35,000 point sign up bonus that is worth $250 in travel and since the card is first year free right now (they bill you $150 and then rebate after several months) that means your $250 in travel is free and yes you even get the Priority Pass access and 4 lounge passes included in that first year free.

CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite - 20,000 Points (Apply Here)
The CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite card now offers up to a 20,000 Aventura Points sign up bonus worth up to $400 in travel depending on what type of flight you redeem for and since the annual fee of $120 (and supplementary cards are waived as well) those 20,000 points come at no cost to you.

RBC Visa Infinite Avion Card - 25,000 Points (Apply here)
A card not known for straying too far from its standard sign bonus comes out huge this month with a bonus that's 10,000 points higher than normal and offers the first year free! That means you can get 25,000 RBC Rewards points at literally no cost to use towards flights via the RBC airline redemption program or convert to other programs like WestJet (it's 250 WestJet dollars!), British Airways or Cathay Pacific.

If you went for all these cards you ultimately could end up with $1,300 or so in travel credits but even if you only take on one or two you are helping your travel budget significantly at no cost other than regular credit card spend
