Reminder: 1 Week left to take advantage of Best Western's awesome 10,000 points per night redemption offer
We've provided several posts already over the past couple months of Best Western's fall promotion that offers double points on all stays but what's even better with the offer is the redemption side of it!
You can redeem 10,000 points for a reward night at any Best Western Hotel in North America. Of course you wouldn't want to redeem that amount for a hotel that's only 8,000 points but with many being in the 16,000 to 24,000 point range per night you can see why this becomes a great offer.
When we originally posted the offer back in September there was some confusion on how you book the redemption offer. Thanks to our reader BoogieManer we learned how you do. You simply needed to call Best Western Rewards customer service to take advantage of the redemption offer. Remember it is only good for stays between November 1 and January 31 however you can book those stays right away:
As you can see the Redemption Story here is one that provides some big time value! BoogieManer booekd a hotel in New York City for only 10,000 points per night (30,000 total) instead of 24,000 points per night (72,000 total) That is some huge savings and an example how you really need to keep on top of the game and utilize promotions like this when they come about. Good job BoogieManer!
Great news is that these rates are also now available online, you don't have to actually call in! Here is another New York example at the Best Western Premier Herald Square:
The hotel normally goes for 36,000 points per night but during this promotion it is only 10,000 points!
Once again here are the details of the Best Western promotion:
Double Rewards Points for stays at all Best Western branded hotels Worldwide. Full details, Online registration and booking (Registration is required) Until Nov 30, 17
Additional offer: BWR members can redeem 10,000 points for an exclusive offer for a Free Night valid for a stay at any Best Western branded hotel in North America. The free night is valid for stays taking place between November 1, 2017 and January 31, 2018
Have you or are you going to take advantage of this offer? Tell us your story in the comments section below!

$75 Amex Gift Card for YYC/YEG stays via the beCalgary and BeEdmonton offers
Other blogs, travel deal sites and ourselves tend to always let you know about the awesome BeVancouver offers where you can earn gift card on stays at select hotels in Vancouver. What those other sites and ourselves tend to miss are the 'be' offers for our own hometown Calgary and for Edmonton! Granted the hotel selection is way lower for this offer in these two cities than it is for Vancouver but perhaps if it picks up steam more hotels will jump on board.
They have once again launched Amex Gift Card offers for both cities where you can earn a $75 Amex Gift Card on your first night stay and then $50 for each additional night for stays at Sandman Hotels in both cities. These offers run until February 28, 2018
Find out more here for Calgary and here for Edmonton
Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan: Up to a 40% bonus when you buy miles until December 28
Alaska Airlines has launched yet another buy miles bonus! Though not as good as the 50% we saw earlier in the year some of you may be able to make great use of buying the miles with a 40% bonus. With the 40% offer you are buying Mileage Plan Miles at roughly US 2.11 cents each:
Seeing that you can redeem miles for premium class flights on British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Hainan, Korean Air and more, there are lots of options for you to use these miles. Remember it only takes 70,000 Mileage Plan miles to fly Cathay Pacific First Class one way from North America to Asia and those 70K will cost you US$1478.13 as seen above - and to pay for that first class will cost you a lot more than that!
Offer details
Earn up to 40% Bonus Mileage Plan Miles when you buy or gift miles. Full details Until Dec 28, 17
- 10,000 – 19,000 miles = 20% bonus
- 20,000 – 39,000 miles = 35% bonus
- 40,000 – 60,000 miles = 40% bonus

Membership Rewards Use Points for Purchases explained
In 2016 American Express took a major step in providing more flexible reward options for Cardmembers earning Membership Rewards points. They took their very popular TripFlex option, which allowed Cardmembers to redeem points against any travel charge that was paid for with a Membership Rewards earning card from American Express, and expanded it. The expanded program is now called Use Points for Purchases, which is fitting because you can literally use points for almost any purchase on your card.
The Use Points for Purchases still incorporates the old TripFlex rate and introduced a new redemption rate for non-travel purchases:
The travel option of the Use Points for Purchases is great for those looking for the utmost flexibility in using points for travel. You get to book the flights that are best for you, from the carrier you want, right from the airline’s website, a travel agent or any online travel portal. It even covers non-air travel, such as car rentals.
Book your hotel via the hotel's website, a cruise via a travel agent or even an all-inclusive vacation, and you can redeem your Membership Rewards points for it all. All you have to do is charge the travel to any Membership Rewards earning American Express Card and when the charge shows up, redeem your points against it at a rate of 1,000 points for a $10 statement credit.
The great thing with Membership Rewards is that you can continue to fund your trip with points even after it's over, since American Express allows you to redeem for a charge up to 12 months after it gets posted to your account. This is an awesome feature of Use Points for Purchases because most traditional loyalty programs, and even some proprietary credit card programs, require you to have some, or all of the points at the time of booking. Since American Express does not, and gives you up to 12 months, you can be in the middle of a month long European vacation when you decide you want to take a train trip into the majestic Swiss Alps. Simply pay for the train trip with your Amex card, then when you get home, redeem your points for it and voila – that train trip is covered!
When purchasing flights and accommodations, remember you can also earn frequent flyer miles, frequent guest points or whatever reward program points may be associated with the service. Think about it, you are redeeming points to get something cheaper or free and are still gaining miles or points in other programs! You can't do that with traditional frequent flyer or guest programs with their awards.
Use Points for Purchases is not only great for booking travel, but non-travel purchases too. With
the holiday’s coming up, what better way to use your points to buy a gift for family, friends, or
even yourself! And while purchasing gifts through Use Points for Purchases, you’ll be gaining
rewards points back at the same time.
The newest addition to Use Points for Purchases allows American Express Cardmembers to redeem points for almost anything they charge to their cards. The rate for non-travel purchases is 1,000 points for a $7 credit. Depending on which American Express Card you carry, this means you are achieving a rate of return from 0.7%, all the way up to 3.5% with the eats & drinks accelerator category on the new American Express Cobalt Card. Not many cash back cards will afford you with an unlimited cash back amount of 3.5% on eats & drinks purchases.
Membership Rewards make it easy to redeem for charges online by providing Cardmembers with a handy slider to decide how many points they want to redeem against a certain charge. Here are examples of the travel and non-travel redemption slider option:
You can also redeem points on-the-go by using the Amex app. All you have
to do is open the app, tap on the transaction you want to redeem points
against and click Use Points. It can’t get any easier than that!
If you're not an American Express Cardmember yet, we recommend you check out the American Express card listings to find the card that is right for you.
Personally, I have used the Use Points for Purchases and love it. I have used it pay for the taxes and fees on Aeroplan award tickets, hotel stays and more. It is just one of the many features and benefits from American Express that have led to our household making them the primary cards in our household and Membership Rewards our primary loyalty program.

How about you? Have you used Use Points for Purchases? Tell us how and what for and feel free to ask us your questions about the program if you aren't a Cardmember yet.

What return does 1,000 points for $7 actually represent for the three most popular Membership Rewards Cards?
American Express Cobalt Card:
5X Points on Eats & Drinks purchases: 3.5% (versus 5% for travel redemption, 5%+ when converting to frequent guest programs)
5X Points on Eats & Drinks purchases: 1.4% (versus 2% for travel redemption, 2.5%+ when converting to frequent guest programs)
1X Points on all All other purchases: 0.7% (versus 1% for travel redemption, 1%+ when converting to frequent guest programs)
American Express Gold Rewards Card:
2X Points on Gas, Grocery, Drug Store & Travel purchases: 1.4% (versus 2% for travel redemption, 2%-5%+ when converting to frequent flyer/guest programs)
1X Points on all other purchases: 0.7% (versus 1% for travel redemption, 1%-2.5%+ when converting to frequent flyer/guest programs)
The Platinum Card from American Express:
1.25 Points on all purchases: 0.875% (versus 1.25% for travel redemption, 1.25%-3.13%+ when converting to frequent flyer/guest programs)
Membership Rewards make it easy to redeem for charges online by providing Cardmembers with a handy slider to decide how many points they want to redeem against a certain charge. Here are examples of the travel and non-travel redemption slider option:

Here are all of Kaligo's partners:
Earn up to 2,000 Bonus AIR MILES Rewards Miles with the 2017 Shop the Block event
The annual AIR MILES Shop the Block event launched on November 14 and presents a really nice bonus mile earning opportunity. If you meet the requirement of using Shop the Block coupons at 3 or more sponsors you'll be awarded with up to 2,000 Rewards Miles over and above the base miles and coupon bonus miles awarded.
Bonuses are as follows:
Use 3 different offers Get 300 Bonus Miles
Use 5 different offers Get 1,000 Bonus Miles
Use 7 different offers Get 2,000 Bonus Miles
Now to earn the bonus won't come cheap if you don't have any planned shopping this month at the participating sponsors. On the other hand if you do or can move shopping from one retailer to another that is an AIR MILES Sponsor than you can earn those bonus miles for your everyday regular spending.
The cheapest way we found to earn the bonus simply by looking at all the details on the coupons (Alberta region) would be as follows:
Spend $25 on almost anything at Rexall (15 Bonus Miles coupon- this was 50 in the spring edition of this offer called Mega Miles)
Spend $50 at Top Shop Top Man (100 bonus Miles coupon)
Spend $50 at Shell that also includes a minimum 25L gas purchase (10 Bonus Miles coupon)
Spend $45 at The Children's Place (5x Miles Coupon)
Spend $50 at Global Pet Foods (15 Bonus Miles Coupon)
If you have a BMO or American Express AIR MILES Credit Card achieving the bonus can be easier as it will count as one offer if you make 25 or more in-store purchases on one of the cards.
That's $220 in spending to earn the 2,000 Bonus Shop the Block Miles but then you have to add in your base amount miles plus the coupon bonuses for an additional ~150 miles or so for 2,150 bonus miles in total. We value AIR MILES Rewards Miles at an average of 13 cents each for travel, so you are getting back $280 on your $220 in spending, that is a great return! If you strictly earn cash rewards, then you are looking at a return of about $226, still pretty decent for spending $220. For some of you it may take more spending but as we mentioned before if this is shopping you are already planning on doing then jump on the Mega Miles event right away so that you can earn this bonus.
