[OFFER EXPIRED] New sign up bonus for the RBC Visa Infinite Avion - Up to 30,000 RBC Rewards Points

THIS OFFER IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE

The RBC Visa Infinite Avion is one of the most popular travel points cards in Canada thanks to some heavy advertising on RBC's part.  This popularity had meant the card rarely if ever had a change to its basic sign up bonus. However that seems to be changing now as RBC seems to be feeling the heat from all the competition! For the summer the offered a $100 travel credit on top of the 15,000 point sign up bonus that normally comes with the card but as of today that offer is over to be replaced with a new one.

Now when you apply for the RBC Visa Infinite Avion you can earn up to 30,000 Bonus RBC Rewards points. You'll get 15,000 upon approval  and then 15,000 more on your card anniversary date. Smart move on RBC's part to try to get you to pay the annual fee twice but still a decent offer seeing what you can pull out of 30,000 RBC Rewards points.

We have written quite extensively about the card over the years and as you may well know we rank it quite high in our annual Top Credit Card Rankings primarily due to the card being a hybrid card where you can convert those points to airlines such as British Airways. Twice a year RBC runs a bonus offer for transferring to BA which ranges from 30% to 50%. So if you hold onto the RBC Rewards points for when a 50% offer comes along you'll be sitting on 45,000 Avios which is enough for three round trip flights from Canada to the U.S. on the following routes:

Or two round trips on the following routes:

Read more about Utilizing British Airways Executive Club for flights in North America.

Another option for BA is to redeem for flights between Toronto and Dublin, Ireland. Only 26,000 Avios in the office season, so with some spending on the card you could easily reach enough to get 2 round trip tickets for that route as well. Read how you can do that here.

If converting the points isn't an option, then as mentioned before those 30,000 points are enough for two short haul flights to neighbouring provinces or states. You'll want to push the value you get out of those points however so we recommend reading our article on How to maximize value out of the RBC Avion Airline Award Chart.

RBC Visa Infinite Avion

  • Start Avioning Today and get up to 30,000 RBC Rewards Points¹ (Up to $700 in value after the 1st year^)
    - Thats 15,000 Welcome Points and an extra 15,000 Anniversary Points after your first year
  • Ability to book flights with any airline with no blackout periods, extremely useful when there are no seat sales
  • Up to a 2.3% return on your spending depending on which reward ticket you book
  • Option to transfer RBC Rewards Points to WestJet Rewards, British Airways Executive Club, American AAdvantage, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles. Look for the transfer bonus to BA several times per year!
  • A complete suite of insurance coverage and benefits

Last seen this past winter, we once again have an Aeroplan specific bonus for booking hotels via Rocketmiles, the third party hotel booking site that awards miles on stays Worldwide. Be sure you check pricing on the stays, sometimes these third party sites can be more expensive and you won't earn hotel loyalty points and may not have your hotel elite benefits recognized. Aeroplan miles earned via Rocketmiles do count towards Aeroplan status.

Air France KLM Flying Blue Promo Awards - Save 25% on award tickets between Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Vancouver & Europe

The newest set of Air France KLM's Promo Awards went live today and for us Canadians this set has four cities for us! With promo awards the discount ranges from 25 to 50% off the regular amount of miles required to redeem for these flights. As you can see just by the discount this can be a very good offer if you get 50% off for Business Class! However for us here in Canada we don't get any 50% offers once again but we do get 25% off which can definitely be utilized by some! While 25% isn't as good as 50% of course, it still is something to look at if you were planning travel in the November of this year. The only exception is Economy Class between Vancouver and Europe which is good for November and December if you choose Air France via Paris.

The offers are:
Vancouver to Europe 25% off Economy or Business Class
Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal 25% off Business Class

Offer Details:
September Promo Awards - Save 20% to 50% on the Award Miles usually required for an award ticket. Destinations vary by each promotional period. Full Details Book by Sep 30 for travel Nov 1 - Dec 31, 17

Here are all the details on the  Canadian offers available for booking this month:

Don't have all the miles? You could always consider transferring Starpoints earned via the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express to Flying Blue. The card has a 25,000 Starpoint bonus right now which translates to 30,000 Flying Blue miles! You can add in even more miles with the Marriott Rewards Premier Visa card, its 50,000 point sign up bonus translates to 16,666 Starpoints which means another 16,666 Flying Blue miles. That's almost enough miles fly the Economy Class routes and have some miles left over or if you include some extra little miles from meeting the minimum spend on the Starwood card you'll have enough miles for a one way business class ticket.

August 31 Update: Alaska Airlines & Singapore Airlines ink partnership, HSBC Premier World Elite first to offer LoungeKey & 500 Bonus Aeroplan Miles at Fairmont Hotels

News, Tips & Tricks
Yesterday we reported about the upcoming changes to the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. One unwritten benefit that was of course not mentioned are surprises that WestJet gives to their cardholders. For example in late July many cardholders were all given 20 WestJet dollars just for being opted in to receive WestJet Rewards emails! Something to think about if you are thinking about getting this card or are rethinking keeping it.

More great news coming out of Alaska Airlines and their Mileage Plan program! They have announced a new partnership with Singapore Airlines! The new partnership will see members of each airline's programs be able to earn miles on each others flights starting on September 27th. Redemption in the new frequent flyer partnership will come at a later and you can bet when that happens we'll have indepth coverage of it as this just makes the Mileage Plan program that much stronger! (Source Alaska Airlines)

Thanks to Rewards Canada reader Canadian Rewards for letting us know that the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is not the first card to have the lounge key access. Looks like the HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard beat the WestJet card to the punch by a week. One could only expect that more World Elite Mastercards in Canada will begin to offer this benefit.

Cineplex SCENE to lose Sport Chek partnership as of October 1st

Well the partnership between SCENE and Sport Chek was relatively short lived. It has been announced that as of October 1st you'll no longer be able to earn or redeem SCENE points at Sport Chek stores across the country.

This is obviously a blow to SCENE which as a program had aspirations to grow into a full fledged coalition program to compete against the likes of Aeroplan and AIR MILES. Right now coalition programs in Canada just can't seem to make growth work in terms of adding and keeping worthwhile partners and such is the case here. Really is too bad as I have two kids involved in sports and it was nice to collect the SCENE points on those semi-frequent purchases at Sport Chek.

Interestingly enough this is the second coalition program to come and go for Sport Chek as if you may recall they used to be an AIR MILES merchant a few years ago.

Perhaps FGL (Forzani's Group) will go ahead and actually launch their own program instead as was reported in the news several years ago.

For SCENE members you'll still be able to earn and burn with Cineplex, Scotia, and the Cara group of restaurants.

 SCENE® VISA* card
• 5,000 bonus SCENE points with $500 in everyday purchases within the first three months.  That's - 5 FREE Movies*
• Earn 1 SCENE point for every $1 you spend on credit card purchases
• Earn 5 SCENE points for every $1 you spend on SCENE Visa purchases at participating Cineplex Entertainment theatres or online at cineplex.com
• Rates, fees and other information are effective as of July 1, 2017.  Subject to change.
• No annual fee
• 20% AVIS rental card discount
