How you can earn a 4% or higher return on lottery ticket and convenience store purchases

Yesterday we brought you the details of the revamped Petro-Points program. Part of the revamp is the set earn rate of 10 points per dollar spent on in-store purchases. This includes lottery purchases and for me there is a Petro-Canada on the way to my office so it makes it easy to stop in and get the tickets there. As you'll see from the post on the revamp, the 10 points per dollar on the lotto purchases equates to a 1% return. Its not a lot but better than 0 for buying lottery tickets at most other places. You can earn 'points' or 'miles' on lottery purchases at Esso (Esso Extra Points or Aeroplan Miles) and Shell (AIR MILES) as well.

The bonus of buying lottery tickets and/or convenience store items at gas stations is many credit cards have bonus multipliers for gas station purchases and any purchases made including lottery show up as gas purchases. I use the American Express Gold Rewards Card since it earn 2 Membership Rewards at gas stations, which equates to 2 Aeroplan Miles or British Airways Avios for me. Sometimes I'll use the Starwood Preferred Guest Card from American Express, it only earn 1 Starpoint per dollar but those Starpoints have high value. For others you may choose the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card since it earns 4 points per dollar on gas station purchases or a card like the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card as it earn 1.5 Aeroplan Miles per dollar at gas stations.

For me, my return so far on buying my lottery tickets at Petro Canada is the 2 Membership Rewards points which equates to a 2% return for Use Points for Purchases via Membership rewards but more so a minimum of 3% when transferred to Aeroplan or British Airways but in most cases it is more than that. Plus the 1% from Petro-Points but there is even more that you can add to that return and this why I am now focusing on Petro-Canada for lotto purchases.

As you may recall from November we let you know that you can link your Petro-Points and More Rewards program accounts and earn points for both programs on your Petro-Canada purchases. That means for every dollar spent in-store you'll earn 10 Petro-Points and 1 More Rewards point. We value More Rewards points around 0.4 cents each so now I have added an additional ~.42% to my return.
An example of the earn from one transaction plus my 1,000 bonus More Rewards points from linking the accounts:
This transaction was still at the old Petro-Points program earn rate - updated program would be 530 points
More Rewards earned at Petro-Canada

For me I calculate this return now as 3% from the charge card + 1% from Petro-Canada + ~0.42% from More Rewards for a minimum return of 4.4%. Compare this to Esso Extra where the return would be 3.6% (Esso Extra points are worth ~0.6 cents each) or Aeroplan via Esso would be 3.5% but likely closer to 4%, of course it really depends on what that Aeroplan Mile is redeemed for.  (1 Aeroplan Mile for $3 spent in-store at Esso is a minimum return of 0.5 cents)

Another option is to grab the Scotia More Rewards Visa Card as it earns 6 More Rewards Points per dollar spent at Petro-Canada for a 2.54% return and add in the 1% from Petro-Canada plus the additional More Rewards points for linked accounts for ~.42% and you have 3.96% return.
Woo hoo! Lots of cash to use via More Rewards! ;-)

I'm also going to test to see if the return is ever higher by linking a SPC and/or HBC Rewards card to the Petro-Points account as those partnerships earn an additional 20% Petro-Points. Not sure though if that will work with my account being linked to More Rewards. I'll report back to see if it works linking all those programs! Let us know if you tried this!

UPDATE: Joe B let us know on the Rewards Canada Facebook page that you can indeed link multiple cards to Petro-Points along with your More Rewards Card. That means an additional return of 0.2% on each dollar spent in store!

This opportunity may not be for everyone. Perhaps you have an Aeroplan goal set and are building up miles for that goal, then you are better off going to Esso, or you may even have an AIR MILES goal so you'll be better off at Shell so that you can get to that reward you want. Ultimately you just need to make sure you stay on track for earning the rewards that make sense for you.

Miles & More Award Ticket Sale - Save 50,000 miles on Business Class award tickets between Toronto & Austria

As we do each month we bring you the latest set Miles & More "Meilenschnaeppchen" discounted mileage awards!  This month we finally see new offers, not a lot of them albeit as they are only for Austrian's flights between Toronto and Austria. This month it is a business class deal for those Austrian Airlines flights.

These offers are good for travel until Feb 28, 17

You can redeem Miles & More miles for round trip tickets on Austrian from Toronto to Austria for only 55,000 miles. This is a ~47% discount off the normal Business Class award ticket price of 105,000 miles.

Here are the offers:

Miles & More is a transfer partner of Starwood Preferred Guest which means you can easily transfer over Starpoints to get in on this offer. One transfer of 25,000 Starpoints and another of 20,000 will net you enough miles since Starwood kicks in an additional 5,000 miles for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred. You can easily get 20,000 Starpoints by applying for and receiving the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express. Refer a friend or family member to get the SPG Amex as well and you get another 10,000 Starpoints. Then you get yourself the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa card with the 30,000 or 50,000 point sign up bonus. You can then convert those to SPG at a rate of 3:1 so you have now added 10,000 to 16,000+ more Starpoints to your account. Now you potentially have enough Starpoints to redeem for this offer!

Simply book the offers seen here by February 28th
Full details on this offer can be found here

Earn 50% Bonus Aeroplan Miles on your first Rocketmiles booking

Last seen in May, we once again have an Aeroplan specific bonus for booking hotels via Rocketmiles, the third party hotel booking site that awards miles on stays Worldwide. Be sure you check pricing on the stays, sometimes these third party sites can be more expensive and you won't earn hotel loyalty points and may not have your hotel elite benefits recognized. That being said the mileage bonus may be worthwhile for you to book via Rocketmiles especially if the hotel isn't part of a hotel loyalty program (like a boutique hotel). Aeroplan miles earned via Rocketmiles do count towards Aeroplan status.

January 10 Update: 10,000 Mileage Plan Miles for being an Elevate member, Petro-Points makeover + 9 new bonuses

News, Tips & Tricks
If you opened up a Virgin America Elevate account prior to December 5th you can get 10,000 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles for free. If you don't have a Mileage Plan account yet visit the link below in the bonus offers section to find the promotion and register for it (you also get an option of getting a $100 travel credit instead of 10,000 miles) If you do have an Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan account you can expect an email asking you to link your accounts and they'll give you 10,000 miles (no option of the $100 credit) I received the email this morning as I have not linked my accounts yet so they assumed I did not have a Mileage Plan account but the email does state if you do you can just click their link to be able to link your Mileage Plan and Elevate accounts. I gave it a few tries but kept getting errors. So I'll try later, maybe too many people are trying to link right now. Who knows. No matter what I am excited as those 10,000 miles are worth two short haul one way tickets and there is no cost to them. I will also transfer my Virgin America Elevate points over to Mileage Plan sometime soon as well. Those Elevate points were all free as well from the various free points offers they have had over the years. Got to love free stuff!

The error I keep getting....

Petro-Points get a makeover - easier to understand, now better for some, worse for others

Petro-Points is the latest Canadian program to go through a revamp and the program has become easier to understand in terms of earning and redeeming. This is nice change as the two big Fuel Rewards programs in Canada, Petro-Points and Esso Extra weren't the most straight forward with the latter still in the more 'confusing' state in terms of earning and redeeming.

The new Petro-Points program essentially has two earning rates, one for the fuel you buy and one for purchases made in store. For fuel purchases you'll earn 10 Points per litre which for most consumers is double what it offered before for regular clean fuel (was 5 points per litre) and slightly more for mid-grade (was 7 points per litre) In-store you'll earn 10 points per dollar spent this is significant to note and we'll cover this in a post later this week. The in-store was 20 points per dollar previously, which depending on how you redeemed those points was equivalent to the new 10 points per dollar but in some cases the old rate provided a better return when redeeming for select rewards like gift cards.

On the redemption side, the best part of the program is the one set rate it has for most redemptions. 1,000 points equals $1 or basically a 1% return on in-store purchases or a variable return on fuel depending on what the price per litre is. That rate is very similar to what it was before in the program just less confusing. This redemption rate is usable for dollars off fuel, car wash and in-store purchases and is also the same rate for partner rewards with BCAA, CAA, Itravel2000, Hudson's Bay & Dollar Car Rental. You can still redeem points for fuel savings rewards as well.

Overall its nice to see Petro-Canada move their rewards program to a simpler structure. The program has become more rewarding for those who are buying regular or mid-grade fuel but on the other end for some it may be less rewarding for those who were making in-store purchases and redeeming for gift cards.
