Big Air Miles Bonuses for Gift Card Purchases at Safeway returns! Up to an $18 return per card (until Nov 12, 15)

We haven't seen AIR MILES bonuses for buying gift cards at Safeway since June but this week the bonuses have returned! These are the same as those seen in June but aren't as good as the December offer of 70 AIR MILES per $50 card but are better than the 55 miles in November. With this offer you'll earn 1.2 miles per dollar on these cards or if you work the other way, we value AIR MILES at 11 to 15 cents a piece so you are essentially earning $7.70 to $10.50 with each card. However if you look at our post from a few weeks ago about hacking the Air Miles program you'll know that you can actually get value of over 30 cents per mile on car rentals which means you can technically earn ~$18 on each these gift cards!

Hint: Print multiple copies and go through the till multiple times if you want to buy more than one card for the same retailer!

The merchant gift cards included are Spafinder, Bass Pro Shops, Sears, Roots, The Keg, KFC/Pizza Hut/Taco Bell  Mark's, Cactus Club,  Golf Town and Boston Pizza. There is also an offer of 75 Bonus Air Miles when you purchase a preloaded Visa Gift Card of $200 or more. Those cards however carry an activation fee so it isn't as worth it to buy them.

I bought many cards during the last few go rounds for a lot of bonus Air Miles plus the double Membership Rewards points as I purchased them on my American Express Gold Rewards card which awards 2 points per dollar spent at grocery stores.

Miles & More Award Ticket Sale - Save up to 50% on award tickets to Europe from Montreal and Toronto

As we do at the start of each month we bring you the latest set Miles & More "Meilenschnaeppchen" discounted mileage awards!  This month we see Business Class options for flying out of Montreal from Lufthansa and the continuation of the 50% discount on economy class travel on Austrian Airlines between Toronto and Austria. The Lufthansa offers are for travel between Mar 1 and Apr 15, 16 (must be booked by Nov 30) while the Austrian offers are good for booking and travel until the end of the year.

You can redeem Miles & More miles for round trip tickets on Lufthansa from Montreal to Europe for only 55,000 miles in Business Class.  This is nearly a 48% discount off the normal Business Class award ticket price of 105,000 miles.  The Austrian Airlines option out of Toronto is also a full 50% discount on economy class which means an award ticket price of only 30,000 miles. Granted all these tickets will also have fuel surcharges but this is still a pretty good deal when you look at it as a whole in terms of miles+cash outlay.

The crazy thing is that you can actually get the round trip economy class tickets for only $5,000 in credit card spend (and a $120 annual fee). How so? As we usually mention in this post you can boost your Miles & More account with the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express. If you read our blog regularly you'll know that right now the card comes with a 20,000 Starpoint sign up bonus. When you convert those 20,000 Starpoints to Miles & More SPG will award you an additional 5,000 miles. Which gives you 25,000 miles but if you spend $5,000 on the card you'll have 25,000 Starpoints and the 5,000 Miles bonus giving you the 30,000 miles required for this flight. Of course fuel surcharges and taxes are extra.

The best no foreign transaction fee card in Canada makes it to this list due to a very strong acquisition offer. I mean who can complain with 30,000 points awarded on approval and a certificate for a free night stay at a Category 1-4 hotel for a potential of 5 free nights, all at no cost as the card has the annual fee waived in the first year! They also give you  a 15 night credit into the mix which automatically provides you with Marriott Rewards Silver Elite status. There is also a 50,000 Point offer meant only for Marriott Elite members which many non-elites have had success with when they apply for it. (You may or may not get the full 50k and if they find out you are not Elite you may only receive the 30k)

Scotiabank Gold American Express Card - 20,000 Points  (Apply here)
A very strong card in the earn category for Gas, Grocery and Dining/Entertainment purchases, the current sign up bonus for the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card is 20,000 points when you reach $1,000 in spending in the first three months. That 20,000 points is equal to a $200 travel credit and since this card is a book anywhere card you can book the travel how you want when you want and when the charge shows up on your account you can redeem the points against the charge. The card normally has a $99 annual fee but of course that is waived in the first year! Welcome back to the Top 5!

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card - 20,000 Miles (Apply here)
Although not as high of bonus as we have seen in the past, the fact you get 20,000 miles and the first year fee waived, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card makes it way back in our top 5! You'll get 15,000 miles on your first purchase and 5,000 more when you hold on to the card for at least three months while saving on the $120 fee in the first year.

You can buy 96,000 miles for EUR 1760. Those 96,000 miles will be enough to redeem for a discounted business class award ticket at 25% off between Edmonton and Europe (with a few miles to spare).

 

 

Looking at Feb 9-16, 2016 in business class you can get the discounted rate between YEG & AMS for 93,7500 miles and C$616.00 in taxes and fees. To buy the miles will cost C$2680.59 (including 5% GST) and add in the taxes and fees on the award flight of C$616.00 for a total of C$3,296.59.

To buy the same tickets outright costs C$5,084.44. As you can see buying the miles can provide you a savings of nearly C$1,800 on these particular flights!

And remember the discount for these Flying Blue tickets is only 25% at this time, sometimes its 50% off so your savings could be even bigger! For example Vancouver was at 50% off for this month but it does appear all inventory is already taken!!

Yesterday we mentioned that Starwood was offering SPG member only discount pricing and they aren' the only ones. Hilton is also testing HHonors member only pricing at select hotels in Houston, Miami, New York and San Diego. The discounts don't appear to be very significant and with limited coverage its hard to say whether many of you can take advantage of it. You can give it a try simply by booking via hilton.com with your HHonors account number.
