According to Airlineroute.net Air Canada will no longer offer their Toronto-Milan service year round. The last summer season flight will be on October 16th. If you are booked on this flight after that date we recommend contacting Air Canada to see what routing they'll put you on rather than waiting for them to contact you.

Aeroplan Transfer Miles Special: 25% off until May 31

Aeroplan launched a transfer miles special today for its members. Until May 24th extended to May 31st members can transfer miles to friends and family for 1.5 cents per mile instead of the regular 2 cents per mile. The minimum transfer amount is 1,000 miles and has a maximum of 999,999 miles.

Transferring miles is usually not the best use of miles for the cost associated with it unless it is the case of programs like Avianca LifeMiles who at times have had 100% bonus miles for transferring to another account. That being said however, sometimes you may only be a few thousand miles short of an award so being able to transfer miles from a family member to reach that award could be the way go rather than buying miles outright when there is a promotion like this. Even more so if your family member won't ever have enough miles to reach their rewards goal transferring them out to another member to for a valuable reward makes total sense.

Apr 28 Update: British Airways Executive Club devaluation kicked in today, list of IHG Hotels changing categories, over 30 new bonuses

Exactly three months ago we let you know about some changes coming to the British Airways Executive Club program. Well today marks the day those earning and redemption changes kick in. Here is an excerpt from our piece in January that highlights the redemption portion that affects most of us:

Changes to Reward Flight Pricing
This is where there is good news but mostly bad news. The amount of Avios required for redemptions in some cases have gone down but some key awards for Canadians have gone up. Avios is now introducing off-peak award mileage rates that only apply to flights on British Airways  and are lower than some of the rates we have become accustomed to. For example you'll now be able to fly between London and Paris during an off peak period for only 4,000 Avios instead of 4,500. The bad news is premium class redemptions for medium and long haul routes are going up. Right now you can redeem for travel between Toronto and London for only 40,000 Avios in Business Class but that is getting a serious increase to 60,000 Avios as of April 28. For those out west who were used to 50,000 Avios Business Class redemptions out of Calgary or Vancouver will see those also grow by 50% to 75,000 Avios. Even the off-peak rates for these redemptions are more than the current redemption rates.

The key thing to note here is that the off-peak rates are only for travel on British Airways. All partner awards (AA, CX etc) are charged at the peak rates year round. The good news for a lot of us is that we utilize Executive Club for short haul redemptions out of Canada to the U.S. for only 4,500 Avios one way and those awards have not changed. So you can still fly on AA (or TAM soon) between Toronto and New York or on Alaska Airlines between Calgary or Edmonton and Seattle for the 4,500 Avios. We also let you know about some changes coming to the IHG Rewards Club program a few weeks ago and one of those changes of course were to redemption rates at several hundred locations. At the time we knew approximately 450 locations were affected (300 going up, 150 going down) and now we know which properties are changing. As many of us travel domestically, here are the changes for the Canadian properties:

As you can see 7 properties have been increased by 5,000 to 10,000 points while 6 have gone down by 5,000 points. You can view the complete list here. (PDF)

Great news for those of you who stay at Best Western Hotels and credit those stays to Aeroplan. The current 8x bonus miles that was supposed to end on April 30th has been extended to August 31st! Find out more about this offer here.

Air India has announced three changes to their Flying Returns program. Now all flights will earn a minimum of 500 miles regardless of fare purchased or length of route that is below 500 miles. There is a new mileage earning structure: 

Gone are the 25% miles awarded on the lowest economy fares as those will now be 50% but on the other hand full fare economy class been lowered from 125% to 100% of miles flown and finally Silver Edge Elite member will earn 15% tier bonus miles instead of 10%.

"Hilton is still an MR partner, but because of some technical issues, it’s not appearing on the site. The team is looking into it and it should be fixed shortly. That said, all redemptions and transfers are still working if Cardmembers call in."

It appears that yet another loyalty program has been hacked. This time it is Hyatt Gold Passport and you should be getting an email from them advising you to change your password. Only a few accounts seem to have actually been affected but as a security measure they want all members to change their passwords. If you try to login into your account with your current password you will get an error saying it is incorrect. Simply click on forget password and they'll send you a temporary one which you can login with and then update to a new password.

Tons of great bonuses were added to Rewards Canada today. Of note are the Triple Aeroplan Miles offers for stays at Coast Hotels or Delta Hotels not to mention the latest Earn Your Wings promotion. Then there is the Alaska Airlines self-tag online bonus for your checked luggage, IHG's Share Everything and several good United flight bonuses if you find yourself connecting via the U.S. to South America or Taipei.

San Diego Highlights: The Baked Bear Custom Ice Cream Sandwiches - Pacific Beach

The Rewards Canada family's last vacation was spent in the San Diego area a few weeks ago and we thought to try something new on the blog outside of the usual hotel reviews, earning and redemptions stories that go along with those vacations and that something new is a restaurant review, this marks our second such review! Although this one is not so much a restaurant but a great place to stop for a treat!

We love driving along and visiting vary places in the beaches area of San Diego and while heading north to La Jolla to view the seals at La Jolla cove my wife and kids spotted this place and we made a promise to stop there on our way back to the hotel. Now we've all seen various ice creams shops and of course all the frozen yogurt places (Yogurtland still being our favorite but Menchies isn't too far behind) but this was first for us. A place where you can create your own ice cream sandwich! Hello! Stop the press. This must be awesome. And to tell you the truth, it is. I don't know if there are other places that do this, a quick Google search brings up the Baked Bear first and no others in first ten results other than recipes for making your own at home.

The process is easy, you pick which cookie you want to encase your ice cream and they don't have to be same, the top can be one type of cookie and the bottom can be another. Then you pick your filling of ice cream and finally you can top it off with a variety of toppings.

Here are our creations:

The one on the left was the cookie of the month (chocolate chip with some sort of nuts) with chocolate ice cream, the bottom right was chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice cream, whip cream, caramel sauce and sprinkles, and top right is the very delicious donut sandwich where the cookies are replaced with a hot pressed doughnut covered in glaze with vanilla ice cream and topped with whip cream and hot fudge.

What a great concept that didn't disappoint. We ended up visiting the Pacific Beach location twice during the five days we were in San Diego but don't worry if you can't get to the beaches area as they also have locations in Carlsbad and Petco Park along with another one coming soon in Carmel Valley.
