In the department of odd redemption options comes this offer from JAL Mileage Bank. It is not for Canadian JAL MB members but it really intrigued me as I haven't seen a redemption like this before so I thought I would pass it along! Feel free to comment with other odd or weird redemption options you've seen before!

WestJet announced yesterday that all Personal Electronic Devices (PED) can be used during all phases of flights including taxi, take off and landing as long as they are in a non-transmitting or flight mode. (Source WestJet). Air Canada instituted the same policy last week on May 28th. This is perfect timing for both airlines as they are both in the process of or will shortly be introducing inflight Wi-fi.

Those of you in YYC or the Alberta region who were looking forward to flying on British Airways' new 787's in July will have to wait a bit longer as that service has been delayed until August 11th. (Source Airlineroute.net)

The earn IHG Rewards Club points earning rate for stays at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts outside of the America's will be changing on July 1st. The new rate will be 10 points per US$1 spent, which is much better than the current 2,000 per stay. Why is it better? Most InterContinental Hotels will cost you well above $200 per night which means you should be able to earn many more points with this new earning structure.

To the surprise of many people Lufthansa's Miles & More program will be discontuing their buy miles option. A very popular feature of many programs nowadays is to be able to sell miles or points to their members and it tends to be quite profitable for many of them. It could be the opposite for Miles & More hence the removal of this option. Full details

WestJet's first foray into Europe must be doing well as they have extended their summer season run between St. John's and Dublin to October 24th from the previously planned end date of October 5th. (Source Airlineroute.net)

In the bonus offers section we have the latest Aeroplan bonus for Marriott stays this summer. We usually sees some sort of varation of this promotion every winter and summer. This summer version seems to entail a lot more properties than usual here in our home country but does also come with a minimum 2 night requisite with one of those nights being a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. The offer definitely caters to the lesuire traveller versus the business traveller unless you head out for work on a Sunday. United Airlines will be launching a new Kelowna to San Francisco service this fall. This will be once daily flight and is good news for Aeroplan, MileagePlus and other Star Alliance members in the Okanogan area as it presents another option for earning and burning your miles. The flights will start on September 20th and be operated with a CRJ. (Source Airlineroute.net)

Air Canada must have seen lots of connections from Ontario and beyond on their Western Canada to Hawaii flights as they have announced new Air Canada rouge service between Toronto and Honolulu. The flights will operate twice weekly beginning November 26th and will run year round. (Source Airlineroute.net)

Aeroplan has launched a new Auction site for their Distinction members called dExclusives. These are exclusive auctions that you can bid your Aeroplan miles on, some are very cool and once in a lifetime opportunities like the FIFA World Cup package of 2 business class tickets, hotels and tickets to the semi-final and finals! Aeroplan introduces dExclusives rewards for Distinction members - tell us which one you like for a chance to win 5,000 Aeroplan Miles!

Yesterday Aeroplan announced and launched the latest benefit for its Distinction members, dExclusives. What is dExclusives? It is an new reward option that will allow Distinction members to bid on or redeem Aeroplan miles on a wide variety of one-of-a-kind rewards.  This new reward option reminds us of SPG's Moments where you bid Starpoints on similar money can't buy experiences and is the first to be offered by a Canadian based loyalty program. Now live - Latest IHG Rewards Club PointBreaks Offers (Valid for stays until July 31)

Despite the recent change in the terms and conditions of PointsBreaks, it is still one of the best redemptions in the hotel loyalty program world.  The new rules state that a member can only book up to 2 reward reservations per hotel participating in the individual offer (ie 2 at Pointbreaks hotels and 2 at Last Minute Reward Night hotels). What this means is that if you want to book a Pointbreaks offer at a hotel you can only have two reservations. No longer will you be able to grab 3, 5 or more reservations (one reservation per night) as some people did to make sure they got the nights at the low award price, plan a trip for some of those nights and then cancel the rest. This change is both good and bad. Good in that more members should be able to grab award nights at the lower levels but bad if you truly want to plan 3 or more trips at one location and have no plans on 'working' the system by cancelling some of those nights. My tip to get around this would be to book 2 reservations with one IHG Rewards Club account and then have your spouse book 2 more etc. Of course this is dependent on both accounts having enough points to redeem for these awards.

Why are IHG Rewards Club Point Breaks such a great deal? Because they offer reward nights at participating IHG hotels Worldwide for only 5,000 Rewards Club points. For those of you not to familiar with Priority Club, normal redemption rates for Rewards Club reward nights run from as low as 10,000 points for some Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express locations to 50,000 points for ultra-luxurious InterContinental locations and even these locations can participate in Point Breaks. So as you can see you can receive a discount of 50 to 88% off the regular redemption rates. You may be thinking that the high end hotels won't participate but they do depending on the time of year! Please note that like most loyalty promotions these offers are capacity controlled so I advise to book sooner than later to ensure you get the Point Breaks rate. May 26 Update: Alitalia MilleMiglia targets flyers aged 14-25, US Airways buy miles bonus extended, Aeroplan bonus for Starwood redemptions

In the bonus offers section we post new bonuses from Alitalia MilleMiglia that targets flyers aged 14-25. In many of my discussions with various levels of employees at loyalty programs I have often mentioned that there are two markets generally ignored or underserved by the programs and those are the youung person market and the old person/baby boomer market. Looks like Alitalia has taken noticed of the first at least with the MilleMiglia Young program which not only has the bonus offer listed below (2,000 of those miles are totally free) but thay also offer everyone in that age group 20% off award tickets. So you earn up to 4,000 miles for joining, you get a 50% bonus on all your flights and a 20% discount on award tickets? That's the way you should target a market! You have a group that cannot afford to fly as much (of course the ~14-18 year set probably have to rely on their parents) so what do you do? You award them more miles on their flights and a discount on redemption, this way that group of flyers who would normally take many years to earn enough miles for an award ticket (or perhaps even never!) may actually have a hope of a redemption and as anyone in the loyalty industry knows that once a member has actually redeemed for a reward, they are more likely to continue using that program and remain loyal as they actually feel the program provides them with value. So if you are in that age group or have kids that age get them to join now at least for the 2,000 miles that come totally free and then work on earning more miles if you are an Alitalia flyer!
