Air Canada will be receiving their Boeing 787's soon to which we have already provided lots of coverage about here on the RC blog included what routes they are initially operating on. For training purposes the plane will be used between Toronto and Montreal in May and June (and a little bit in July) so if you don't think you will get on one of these birds soon for an international flight you can always get on one of these short flights. Aeroplan is showing lots of availability at 15,000 Miles (+$168 in taxes/fees) or you can buy tickets outright for around $330 all in. If you have just recevied or plan on getting one of the TD Aeroplan Visa's that come with a 2 for 1 short haul Aeroplan flight this could be one of those great experiences to use that on. I know there are only a few of you here in Canada who are SAS EuroBonus members so chances are you already know this news but just in case you haven't heard the EuroBonus program is going through some changes this April. The best change is that you can achieve Silver status with only 5 flights on SAS, Wideroe or Estonian Air instead of 10 and the addition of a new top tier, Diamond. Other changes include the ability to give someone Sliver status when you achieve Gold Status or giving someone Gold Status when you achieve Diamond. Increased availability of award flights will also be a new benefit for Gold and Diamond members while Diamonds will also get extended point validity. I could be wrong but from the quick glance at the changes they all seem positive which is a rarity these days! Find all the details here.

Rewards Canada reader Bill W. first alerted us many months ago about the new Smart Check-In feature at Aloft Hotels and now he lets us know that Starwood is expanding program in the coming months including three locations right here in Canada. (thanks once again to Bill W. for keeping us up to speed on this initiative)

As reminder the program is only available to select SPG members at this time but for knowledge sake here is how the program works:

How does it work?

On the day of your arrival at any participating Aloft hotel we will send a message to your mobile device with your room number. When you arrive you can bypass the front desk and proceed directly to your room. Once at your room just touch and hold your Aloft brand SPG card to the door lock and the door will unlock. It's easy-breezy!
With your Aloft brand SPG card, you will be able to take advantage of one of the easiest and fastest check-in experiences ever offered in the hotel industry. You will no longer need to check in at the front desk or kiosk when you arrive, but still enjoy full access to the front desk throughout your stay. Any costs incurred during your stay will be charged to the credit card used to book your reservation. Feel free to stop by the front desk at any time if you have questions or concerns. Also, please note that while your new Aloft brand SPG card does not list your specific SPG member tier, you will continue to receive all the benefits of your tier.

How do I join?

Currently the program is targeted to select SPG members and we are not able to add any additional members at this time. But, please be on the lookout for your invitation to join as we hope to expand the program in the near future!

Travelling to Turkey? Either on Turkish Airlines' direct flight from YYZ or via another connection point? You should note the change in their Visa application requirements which now have you go online at https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/tour/ to obtain a Visa:

• For the moment, Turkish visa can be obtained on arrival (if you are eligible), from the Turkish missions or over the e-Visa Application system (if you are eligible). Please note that visa on arrival will no longer be available as of 10 April 2014.

• e-Visa is valid for tourism and trade purposes only.

• You can check if you are eligible for e-Visa by clicking “Apply Now” and selecting your nationality. Each traveler must obtain a separate e-Visa, including infants and kids. (Even though kids/infants are included in their parent’s passports)

• Your passport must be valid at least for 6 months by the time you enter Turkey. Depending on your nationality, there might be some additional requirements to be met. You will be informed of these after you select your nationality and travel dates.

• You can find out about e-Visa fee by clicking “Apply Now” and selecting your nationality.

• You can only make payment by Mastercard and Visa credit/debit card. The card is not required to be under your name. Please note that cards issued by Turkish Banks are not accepted. Kindly make sure that your card has “3D Secure System” and is open to international transactions.

• After you receive the “e-mail address verification message”, you need to click “approve” button and proceed with the payment within 24 hours. Otherwise, your application will time out, hence the system will not accept payment and you will need to make a new application.

• Kindly inform the Support Desk (via “Contact Form” under “Contact Us” section on main page) in case of any suspended or unsuccessful transaction throughout the whole application procedure. Please do not make a new application or a new payment unless advised otherwise. The Ministry will not be responsible for additional payments and no refund will be granted in case of such unfinished transactions.

• e-Visa fee is only in USD .You don’t have to have a USD account. An equivalent amount in your local currency will be deducted from your account.

• After you make payment, the link to download your e-Visa will be e-mailed to you. Please print out and keep your e-Visa with you while entering and exiting Turkey.

• Validity period of your e-Visa is different than duration of stay. You can enter Turkey anytime within validity period. Please note that, if you wish to enter Turkey earlier than the date specified on your e-Visa, you need to make a new application.

• Once e-Visa is processed, none of the information on it can be changed. It is your responsibility to secure that information on e-Visa is exactly the same with the information on your passport. Otherwise, your e-Visa will be invalid, and there will be no refund for it.

• There are numerous web sites which claim to assist users in receiving Turkish e-Visas in return of a service charge. We do not have any connection with them. Therefore, we cannot be held responsible for any misuse of information or failure of service on their side.

• e-Visa application has no connection with Turkish Embassies or Consulates General. For any information you should contact e-Visa Support Desk through “Contact Us” on the main page.

More bad news on for holders of The Platinum Card from American Express. The instant elite status with Cathay Pacific (Marco Polo Club Gold) will no longer be instant but rather cardmembers will now have a 'fast-track' to earn that status. There was news around this before Christmas but it has not been confirmed by American Express until now. Essentially the regular Marco Polo Gold requirements are cut in half for Platinum Card members while Silver can be achieved with one flight in First or Business Class.

American: Up to 30% Bonus Miles and a 10% Discount on buying AAdvantage Miles until Feb 6

American Airlines is offering another up to 30% bonus on buying their AAdvantage Miles however they have sweetened the pot if you jump on the offer by February 6th by providing a 10% discount on your miles purchase. This means if you max out your purchase at 60,000 AAdvantage Miles (78,000 with the bonus) you'll be buying those miles at 1.98 cents a piece. Usually when a buy miles offer comes in under 2 cents per mile it is worth taking AAdvantage of! Though this is not as low as the US Airways Dividend Miles buy miles offers (approx 1.8 cents per mile) the current offer from the US Airways camp is only for US Airways credit card holders so this AA buy miles offer is definitely worth considering.

Feb 3 Update: Wyndham Rewards devalues points to miles conversions, The Platinum Card from Amex loses AA/US Airways lounge access, Double Starpoints with SPG Dining

Earlier today we posted the news about Aeroplan becoming the latest Rocketmiles partner where you can earn thousands of Aeroplan miles on your hotel bookings. We went back to Aeroplan with one more question, do miles awarded via Rocketmiles count towards Distinction status and the answer is yes!! If you read any of the U.S. or U.K. frequent flyer blogs you'll have known that their versions of The Platinum Card from American Express were losing access to American Airlines Admiral Clubs and US Airways Club this March. We can confirm now that this is also the case for the Canadian version of The Platinum Card as letters have and are being sent out to cardholders about the change. Here is an excerpt:

Airport Club Access/Airport Lounge Changes
Starting March 21, 2014 select American Express Cardmembers will no longer have access to American Airlines Admirals Club and US Airways Club airport lounges through their Card benefits. However, these lounges only represent a fraction of those available through our Airport Lounge Program. Applicable Cardemembers will still have complimentary access to Priority Pass lounges, Delta Skyclubs and American Express lounges, which combined offers access to over 600 lounge locations around the world.

The above doesn’t apply to Cardmembers who qualify directly under American Airlines’ or US Airways’ access policies. Meaning, any Cardmember who currently have access to the American Airlines Admirals Club lounges or US Airways Club lounges will continue to receive this access under those policies.

Finally, Cardmembers can still visit American Airlines lounges by purchasing a one-day lounge pass or an annual Admirals Club Membership. If they would like to visit the US Airways Club lounge, they may purchase a temporary lounge pass or an annual US Airways Club Membership.

Another program decides to change redemption rates and once again without advance notice! The program is Wyndham Rewards and the change comes in their points to airline miles conversion. As of January 31 the decent ratio of 1,000 points to 400 airline miles was halved, now those 1,000 points will only net you 200 airline miles. As Ric Garrido puts it on his Loyalty Traveler blog:

When pegged to the base points earn rate for hotel spend in these five programs, the new Wyndham Rewards points-to-miles exchange rate is now the equivalent to most of the major hotel programs dominant in the USA

It is really unfortunate to see this happen yet again but other than Wyndham now matching chains like IHG, Best Western and Club Carlson in the airline miles ratio, changes like these are brought about as the hotel reward programs try to get members to re-evaluate where they use their points and as any good loyalty program manager would tell you the best place is for their own brand redemptions. With a devaluation like this it is the hope of Wyndham Rewards that they will have less point to airline conversions and more redemeptions for stays at their hotels as those reward nights typically bring along incremental revenue like dining, spa services etc. where at least part of that room redemption can be recouped. Rocketmiles adds Aeroplan as their latest partner - Earn 3,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles on your first booking!

As you know we have provided tons of coverage on the third party hotel booking site Rocketmiles.com here on Rewards Canada and on FrequentFlyerBonuses.com. Up until today the programs included really only worked for some Canadian's as their partners have been  U.S., European or Middle East based.
