Rewards Canada through the years!

As many of you may have seen, Rewards Canada underwent a renovation that launched late last week. A new logo, new website design and new social media branding. Rewards Canada is a huge website with tons of content so as you navigate the site you may find some pages still in the last version but don't worry I am going through and updating between 5-10 pages a day and hope to have the majority of the site transferred to the new look by the end of May! There will also be some tweaks to new site (I am going to update some of the content fonts) as time goes on as well.

This update marks the sixth version of Rewards Canada since launching in 2001 and I thought it would be fun to show you what Rewards Canada looked like through the years.  Enjoy!

Rewards Canada Mk.1 (2001-2002):
Unfortunately I don't have any screen shots of the very first version of Rewards Canada as I wasn't sure where the site was heading and never thought to keep copies of it. It is quite possible that it is located on 3.5" floppy disk somewhere in storage! I'll update this post if I find it

Rewards Canada Mk.2 (2002-2005):

Rewards Canada Mk.3 (2005-2007):

Rewards Canada Mk.4 (2007-2011):

Rewards Canada Mk.5 (2011-2013):

 Rewards Canada Mk.6 (2013):

May 7 Update: 2 New Travel Credit Cards, Aeroplan bonus for new Delta Privilege members, Voila Hotel Rewards systemwide bonus

Here is what Tuesday offers of up in the world of travel rewards in Canada!

News, Tips & Tricks

A couple of new travel rewards credit cards are out now in the Canadian market:

Thanks to long time Rewards Canada reader Jean-Pierre H. for letting me know about the BMO® IGA AIR MILES®† MasterCard® for residents in Quebec. The primary features of the card are:
  • 2 AIR MILES reward miles for every $20 spent at IGA
  • 1.25 AIR MILES reward miles for every $20 spent at Shell service stations
  • 1 AIR MILES reward mile for every $20 spent everywhere else
  • Plus, get a Welcome Bonus of 140 AIR MILES reward miles with your first card purchase2.
  • Enjoy all of this for NO ANNUAL FEE5.
  • Automatic AIR MILES GOLD cardholder status for the first year you have the card6.
  • 2 AIR MILES reward miles for every $35 spent on your card at a Club Voyages®◊ agencies

The other card is an enhancement to an existing card and that is the new CUETS CHOICE REWARDS® World Elite® MasterCard®. From what I can tell it slightly enhances the offering of the already great CUETS Platinum Class MasterCard. The enhancements are that you redeem via the Choice Rewards program rather than the Platinum Class program (from what I can tell the value of your points is exactly the same) plus the addition of Price Protection and Concierge Services seen with most World Elite MasterCards. Finally it appears the limit of 400,000 points per year seen on the Platinum Class card are gone with this card

I will be adding these two cards to Rewards Canada credit card comparison charts and of course they will be in the running for our 5th Annual Canada's Top Travel Rewards Credit Card feature!

Just in time for gardening and renovation season comes another short term Aeroplan bonus. This time its for shopping at Home Hardware, members can earn 3x the miles on Home Hardware purchases from May 8 to 18.  Full details

Aeroplan announces new partnership with UPS Store = Bonus Aeroplan Miles

Aeroplan announced a new partnership with the UPS Store today where members can earn Aeroplan miles for utilizing services provided by UPS Stores. Members can earn 1 Aeroplan Mile per $1 spent up to a 1,000 miles per day. Plus they can earn 150 bonus miles on their first transaction at any UPS Store in Canada until December 31.

There is also a free 500 Aeroplan Mile offer if you sign up for the Get More Card from UPS which is a small business solution. I hope the actual stores have more details as the website states nothing about the card and if you go to the UPS's site for Get More Cards it states the following "We are in process of improving our Small Business Solutions Program to better serve you. Please check back in May."

Full details on the partnership and the promos can be found here.

May 6 Update: Kayak.com launches Canadian site, new Aeroplan IHG promo, FFB8: Enter today!

Welcome to the first day of the first full week with the new look Rewards Canada in action! As you may have noticed RC underwent a renovation with new logos, new social media backgrounds and a whole new website template! Other than the RC homepage there haven't been too many of the other pages updated to the new look yet as this is going to be an ongoing process for me with about 5-10 pages being transferred over per day. I hope that the majority of the site will be using the new look by the end of May! There will also have to be some tweaks to the new site as I learn what works and what doesn't and those will be updated as needed. I hope you all like the new look!

News, Tips & Tricks

Kayak.com, the well known flight and hotel search engine will be launching a Canadian version at ca.kayak.com with pricing in Canadian Dollars and the option to switch between English or French. (Source: Tnooz)

There is a short term Aeroplan bonus for shopping at Uniprix, members can earn 5x the miles on purhcases over $35 until May 15. Full details

There is also a new triple Aeroplan Miles offer for IHG stays however the link from Aeroplan.com goes to an incomplete IHG page that does not fill in the proper promo code when trying to register for it. I have emailed my IHG contacts for the proper landing page/promo code and also mentioned that the page has lots of details from a previous offer that must have been copy and pasted over. I will provide an update once I hear back from IHG.

FFB8: And if for some reason you missed it, I am celebrating the 8th year of my global site, FrequentFlyerBonuses.com with a contest. Be sure to check it our here.

FFB8: The FrequentFlyerBonuses.com 8th Anniversary Contest (Week 1)

FFb 8th Anniversary Contest

A little over 8 years ago in February 2005, FrequentFlyerBonuses.com launched to no fan-fare. It was an experiment of sorts and a logical expansion of the FFB Group’s first website RewardsCanada.ca. A major section of the Rewards Canada website was the Bonus Offers section and we noticed a lot of traffic from outside of Canada hitting those pages even though they didn’t list any offers that were available to non-Canadians. So the idea dawned on FFB’s founder to help that traffic by launching a Global site covering bonus offers from frequent travel programs worldwide and thus FrequentFlyerBonuses.com was born!

Fast forward to 2013 and FFB is even bigger and better and providing more coverage than we ever have of promotions relating to the world of frequent travel. Most of that success can be attributed to FFB’s dedicated fans and readers and without the support of them FFB would not be where it is today. We would like to thank past, present and future FFBers by offering you a chance to win some fantastic prizes as we celebrate our 8th anniversary!

There are four amazing prize packages to be won with FFB8! Over the course of the next four weeks there will be four different ways to enter one of the four prize packages.

May 2 Update: Frontier to charge for carry-on bags, a few Aeroplan promos (and my thoughts on one of them!)

Another quiet day here at RC (well at least on what I can present to you!) Big things happening here behind the scenes. If everything goes as planned you'll see the results tomorrow!

News, Tips & Tricks

Following in the footsteps of Spirit Airlines and Ryanair, Frontier Airlines has announced they will start charging for carry on bags (only to those people who don't buy tickets via Frontiers website) and will charge a $1.99 for coffee, tea, soda, and juice for those who buy tickets in the two lowest economy fare classes. Now its been a few years since Frontier pulled out of Vancouver and Calgary but thought this was still worth mentioning for those of you who may fly F9 on US domestic routes. (HT One Mile at a Time)

Following last weeks announcement from Air France KLM Flying Bue about changes to their InterContinental award tickets comes the news that they will be opening up First Class award seat space on Air France to non-elite Flying Blue members. (HT The Points Guy)

In the bonus offers section you'll notice the Air Canada bonus for the new Istanbul route that I mentioned yesterday. The more I think about it I think it is a really weak route launch bonus! AC feels it is enough to offer a small bonus and I guess it is better than nothing as AC usually doesn't have route launch bonuses like we see from American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and so on but come on 1,500 bonus miles for Economy Class? On an Intercontinental route? Not worth it if others airlines are pricing cheaper (consider Turkish Airlines, a Star Alliance partner no less). You have to ask the question: What is the point of a route launch bonus? There are a few reasons airlines have route launch bonuses some of which are as follows (but not limited to) ...

  1. Drive awareness of the new route

  2. Fill the plane. New routes tend not to be full so a route bonus is put in place to move traffic from another airline (an enticement for switching) or encourage changes to travel plans (ie in this case connect to other flights via Istanbul instead of Frankfurt, London, etc.

Well this promotion will drive awareness of the route as Aeroplan members will see the promotion  on the website and in their emails but will it fill the plane with such a small bonus? I'm not that sure. When American Airlines launches a new Intercontinental route they either offer Double Miles or a tiered bonus depending on the fare class which usually range from 5,000 miles in economy to 50,000 in Business or First depending on the promotion or route. Those are the numbers that will drive point #2 to success. Granted, perhaps Air Canada has already sold a decent amount of seats but those bookings have tapered off now and they want to fill a few more with this small enticement.  The people who will make the most of this promo are the elites who will choose flying AC for the benefits instead of another airline regardless of price. Ultimately without seeing actual numbers its a guessing game on my part but when you see the bonuses most airlines place on new routes, Air Canada's is just piddly.

May 1 Update: American & Delta up domestic ticket change fees, Etihad partners with Accor & 2x Skyward Miles for Emirates flights to Japan

What does Wednesday bring us? Quite a bit of news and a small amount of bonus offers!

News, Tips & Tricks

On the earning side the two biggest new pieces had their own posts today on RC. The increased sign up bonus for the American Express Choice Plus Credit Card and the US Airways Buy Dividend Miles bonus.

Etihad Airways Guest has become the latest airline program partner of Le Club accorhotels. Le Club points transfer at a rate of 2:1 into the Guest program. (HT LoyaltyLobby)

Both American Airlines and Delta Airlines have jumped on the "Let's increase our ticketing change fees" bandwagon as they follow in the footsteps of United and US Airways.  Delta has chosen to raise their domestic change fees (US and Canada) to $200 and American did exactly the same, raising their domestic ticket change fees to $200 as well.

American Express Choice Plus Credit Card sign up bonus increased to 12,000 points

As I mentioned in my daily update post yesterday there is another card featuring an increased sign up bonus and that card is the American Express Choice Plus Credit Card. The card normally features a 7,500 point sign up bonus but that has been upped to 12,000 which is enough for a $100 Gift Card or a $120 credit for TripFlex redemptions. You can learn more about the card in my review posted last fall or apply for it online.

  • Earn a Welcome Bonus of 12,000 Membership Rewards® points the first time you use the approved Card. That’s enough for a $100 Gift Card for dining, entertainment, or home improvement!

  • Earn 2 Points for every $1 in eligible Card purchases at your 5 places chosen from a list of select American Express merchants. That’s double the points compared to your Card purchases everywhere else.

  • Earn 1 Point for every $1 in Card purchases everywhere else.

  • Choose your 5 places from a list of select American Express merchants, including stores, restaurants, hotels and more.

  • Enjoy an introductory 2.99% interest rate on purchases for the first 12 months of Cardmembership, 19.99% thereafter, 21.99% on funds advances, provided you make your minimum monthly payments on time.

US Airways: Buy/Gift Dividend Miles and earn up to 100% Bonus Dividend Miles

As I mentioned last week the 100% Bonus on buying US Airways Dividend Miles is back. The offer runs from until May 31st. This time the bonus is for both buying and/or gifting Dividend Miles but has varying bonus levels. Of course buying at the highest level provides you with the biggest bonus.

  • Buy/gift 5,000 – 9,999 miles, get a 25% bonus
  • Buy/gift 10,000 – 19,999 miles, get a 50% bonus
  • Buy/gift 20,000 – 29,999 miles, get a 75% bonus
  • Buy/gift 30,000 – 50,000 miles, get a 100% bonus

The promo allows you to buy up to 50,000 miles (so 100,000 in total with the bonus) at 3.5 cents per mile (effective rate is 1.75 cents per mile) plus taxes of $131.25 for total of $1881.25. Considering that can get you a business class ticket between North America and Europe or Asia that can cost a lot more than that, this is a good deal! Since US Airways allows 3 day holds on award tickets you can always find the award flights you want before you buy the miles and therefore you don't have dole out a hefty chunk of change just in case you cannot find availability for your preferred award flights.

Earn 100% Bonus US Airways Dividend Miles when you buy miles by May 31, 2013!
