Great Deal Alert: 15,000 Bonus Points at the Leipzig Marriott Hotel

Occasionally I have posted about some great Marriott Rewards earning offers but this one is different. Why is this one is different then some other specific Marriott offers I have posted about? Because this time the rate for the room to earn the bonus points is actually LESS than other rates for the hotel! Usually it is the other way around where the bonus points rate is 5, 10, 50 dollars, euros, pounds more but still worthwhile if the bonus is big enough.

So what is the offer? The offer is for 15,000 Bonus Marriott Rewards points for a 2 night stay at the Leipzig Marriott Hotel in Germany. When I searched a 2 night stay, Oct 17-19 using the promo code M11 which is for the 15,000 points the rate came up at EUR109 per night. The next closest rate was the AAA rate at EUR132 and the standard rate was EUR139. So not only are you saving at least EUR23 per night you are also gaining the 15K points! I also tried November 14 -16 and once again it was cheaper than all standard rares although the non-cancelable, non-refundable, payment up front, book 21 days in advance rate was cheaper by EUR 5 per night. In that case, I would still take the bonus points rate as the return on 15,000 points is way better than the EUR10 savings and you don't have all the conditions attached to it.

Oct 17-19 Rates

Rate Rules

Nov 14-16 Rates

Those 15,000 points will get you a free night in a Category 3 hotel or even a point saver at a Category 4 hotel which the Leipzing Marriott is set at. So if things work out for you, you are essentially getting a free night after your 2 night stay. I'd love to know if anyone will be taking advantage of this offer, let me know below in the comments. Oh and by the way the Bonus Points rate is fully cancelable until the date of check in.

Last day to buy Avianca TACA LifeMiles with a 100% Bonus

Today is the last day to take advantage of the 100% bonus on buying LifeMiles, the frequent flyer currency of Star Alliance member Avianca TACA.

As seen in my post earlier this month when the promo launched here is why this can be a good deal:

The biggest difference this time (and part of July's) is that Avianca TACA is now a member of the Star Alliance. So while before I used to tout this offer as a way to get Lufthansa business class from North America to Europe for $1800, you can now use the miles on any Star Alliance airline. The program also offers one way rewards at exactly half the round trip cost and does not charge fuel surcharges on award tickets.

With business class tickets to Europe going for 100,000 miles and Asia for 120,000 miles you can travel 'luxuriously' for a lot less with this deal. Another great feature of LifeMiles (in fact even better than buying all the miles) is their Cash + Part Points option. This option only requires that you have 40% of the points for a reward (so buy 40% during this 100% bonus period) and then you can buy the rest of the miles (the other 60%) at $12.75 per 1,000 miles or 1.275 cents per mile!

Of course there are always caveats to promos and the one condition for this promo is that you had to be a LifeMiles member before the promotion started. If you are not a member, don't fret, while you can't take advantage of the offer this time the 100% Buy Miles promotion seems to have become a regular staple from the LifeMiles programs just like it has with US Airways Dividend Miles.

Visit LifeMiles for more details.

Sep 26 Update: Great Virgin Atlantic Hilton Promo, Increased sign up bonus for Cathay RBC Visa and more

News, Tips & Tricks
I'm not sure how good of deal this offer is but I found it buried in the 'news' section of Aeroplan with no other promotion of it:

Until Oct 14 redeem for ClassicPlus Flight Rewards in Executive Class, on select routes in Western Canada and to the Maritimes for fewer miles! This means you have access to more flight options at reduced mileage levels, for a limited time.

Reduced mileage levels on ClassicPlus Flight Rewards in Executive Class are now available on the following routes:

Vancouver (YVR) to Calgary (YYC)
Vancouver (YVR) to Edmonton (YEG)
Vancouver (YVR) to Winnipeg (YWG)
Saskatoon (YXE) to Toronto (YYZ)
Regina (YQR) to Toronto (YYZ)
Toronto (YYZ) to Halifax (YHZ)
Ottawa (YOW) to Halifax (YHZ)
Ottawa (YOW) to St. John (YYT)
Montreal (YUL) to Halifax (YHZ)
Montreal (YUL) to St. John (YYT)
St. John (YYT) to Toronto (YYZ)
Halifax (YHZ) to St. John (YYT)

Why am I not sure whether this is a good deal? To begin with these are 'ClassicPlus' redemptions so they already cost more (at least 30%) then the base level Classic Flight redemptions. So the 'sale' is on more expensive products and most of these are shorter flights that beg the question, do I really want to burn my miles for domestic Executive Class on flights that are 3 hours or less? I know I wouldn't but there may be, just may be one of you out there who can take advantage of this promo and therefore, in that case, its a good deal. Full details can be found here.

In the bonus offers check out the Virgin Atlantic Hilton HHonors offers, I suspect many of you are not big time VS Flying Club members but this promo could be advantageous to HHonors members since you can convert Flying Club Miles to Hilton at a 1:2 basis (ie if you complete 5 stays and get the 15,000 bonus miles those can be converted to 30,000 HHonors points). The MarriAnother offer of note is the increased but really pathetic sign up bonus for the RBC Cathay Pacific Visa Card, it has be increased by 5,000 points to 15,000 until Oct 31. Really unless you are a big time Cathay flyer that sign up bonus won't attract anyone (thanks to Mark who mentioned this in the comments of another post)

And as you see every day now, please be sure to vote for your favourite travel rewards credit cards at Canada's Choice - Canada's Top Travel Rewards Credit Cards 2012!

Sep 25 Update: Air Canada Top Tier now Altitude, earn up to 100K or more AAdvantage Miles on Transatlantic flights

News, Tips & Tricks
You may recall my post detailing the changes coming to the Air Canada Top Tier program for 2013. On September 20th Air Canada officially announced the changes and with it comes a name change to the Top Tier program. It will now be known as Air Canada Altitude instead of Air Canada Top Tier. There is a good post on FlyerTalk from Air Canada with an overview on the program changes. As I posted in that earlier post, there will now be 5 levels of 'elite status' within Air Canada Altitude as follows:
Altitude Prestige 25K (25,000 Status Miles or 25 Status Segments)
Altitude Elite 35K (35,000 Status Miles or 35 Status Segments)
Altitude Elite 50K (50,000 Status Miles or 50 Status Segments)
Altitude Elite 75K (75,000 Status Miles or 75 Status Segments)
Altitude Super Elite 100K (100,000 Status Miles or 95 Status Segments)
Complete details on the program can be found at aircanada.com/altitude

In the bonus offers check out American Airlines' new offer for Transatlantic flights on American, British Airways and Iberia. Since BA is included you don't have to travel via the U.S. to take advantage of this offer. I expect we'll see an offer from British Airways for their Executive Club members and Iberia for their Plus members offering the same or similar bonuses.

New Scotiabank American Express Cards released today

Scotiabank and American Express are launching a new partnership today which will see Scotiabank issue American Express branded credit cards.  This is one of the cards I have been hinting at that has the launch party tonight in Toronto. The suite of three cards are primarily travel focused but will offer other rewards outside of travel. This is American Express' first foray in partnering with a Canadian bank since their short lived partnership with CIBC back in 2002.

Depending on which card you get, the cardmember will be able to earn up to 4 points per dollar spent in certain categories (gas stations, grocery stores, on dining and entertainment). Which from their press release, Scotiabank believes will lead all other travel rewards cards in the market and for those categories it does to the set spending limit. The Scotia Rewards Points are the same as the Scotia Gold Passport Visa, 10,000 points = $100, so for those categories where the cards earn 4 points per dollar you will be getting a 4% return! This sort of return has not been seen for cards that do not have redemption options for frequent flyer or guest programs. The only catch is that the 4 Points per dollar are capped on the first $50,000 spent in those categories after which it drops down to 1 point per dollar.

The annual fees are lower than most of the cards they compete with the Gold version at $99 Primary ($29 Supp.), the basic version at $39 ($15 Supp.) and the Platinum at $399 ($99 Supp.)

From today's press release
“This announcement launches a new collaboration between Scotiabank, Canada’s most international bank, and American Express, a leading global brand renowned in the payments sector for excellence in travel, rewards and service,” said Anatol von Hahn, Scotiabank Group Head of Canadian Banking. “Starting today, we are able to offer Canadians a new suite of travel cards which we believe lead all others in this market for travel rewards – which we know are particularly important to Canadians. In launching this card, Scotiabank is the only major Canadian bank able to offer customers the benefits of an American Express-branded card.”
It appears the card will function like the American Express cards with TripFlex, TD Travel Visa's, Diners Club MasterCard and Capital One Aspire Travel MasterCards in that you can redeem points after you have booked and paid for it. Even when you go to redeem your points like those other cards save the Capital One Aspire Travel MasterCards, you don't need the full amount of points as you have the option of paying part points, part cash for your travel.

The Gold and Platinum versions of the cards also come with the full suite of benefits we now expect with cards like these including trip cancellation and interruption insurance, out-of-province medical insurance (up to 25 days for those under 65, 10 for those over) and of course baggage delay/lost, flight delay and car rental insurance. The card also matches the Capital One cards in offering Price Protection from lower prices on something you buy for up to 60 days after you purchase it.

Sign up bonuses are 20,000 for the Gold Version, 8,000 for the basic version and 40,000 for the high  end Platinum version.

The Gold version offers a discounted Priority Pass annual membership of $65 ($99 regular) with lounge visits being the standard $27. The Platinum Version offers the Priority Pass membership for free plus 10 free lounge visits for the Primary cardmember and 4 free lounge visits for the Supplementary cardmember, after which the $27 fee comes into place.

I think I would consider this card for the higher earning of 4x points on Dining and Entertainment and the other categories plus the extensive insurance when compared to my Amex Gold Rewards card however it doesn't appear to offer some of my favourite features of American Express like Front of the Line and the Membership Rewards conversion options to Aeroplan and British Airways. I'm going to have to do some serious thinking and calculating of my expenses (to see where I sit with that $50K limit on 4x points) over the next few days to see which way I go with this one! I've got lounge access covered with my Diners Club card so that portion won't sway me. In some ways I'm surprised Amex let Scotia make such a rich offering as I believe it will move some people over from their own product, namely the Gold Rewards Card, as this is a credit card not a charge card and in terms of Travel Points, is more rewarding up to that $50K limit. But then again, Amex is getting the business either way even if they have to share it with Scotiabank! And for Scotiabank, its about time they released something new in the travel realm as their ScotiaGold Passport Visa is relatively weak especially when compared to many of the cards that have come onto the market in the past few years.

You can find complete details on the cards at scotiabank.com/4xfaster
