United ups baggage fees for those who check in at the Airport

United quietly introduced baggage fee increases on May 14 for flights on or after June 10. They have increased the first and second checked bag fees to $20 and $30 respectively for those who chose to check in at the airport. If you check in online and pay for your bags online the fees remain at $15 and $25. These fees are in effect for travel within the 50 states and to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada.

United: Discounted Mileage Plus Reward flights to the U.S.

United Mileage Plus is offering a 5,000 mile discount on Economy Saver flights between the U.S. and Canada, which means reward flights can be had for 20,000 miles if they are available.

Although it looks to be targetted to the U.S. market for travel to Canada, the terms and conditions do not state that Canada to U.S. travel is excluded. Here is a link to the offer. (I tried a dummy booking for YYC-DEN and it came up with 20K so it does work from Canada)

• Economy Saver Awards are available for 20,000 Mileage Plus miles instead of 25,000
• Each passenger is responsible for applicable taxes and fees
• Offer valid for travel between the 48 contiguous United States and Canada

WestJet expands service to Mexico

WestJet has announced quite a major expansion to Mexico for the upcoming winter season. It appears one of the reasons behind this expansion was the termination of the contract between Air Transat and WestJet. These flights will continue to allow WestJet to maximize the utilization of its fleet during the winter months and provides many smaller Canadian cities with service to Mexico that would not normally receive direct non-stop service.
