Online shopping portals have eligible Amazon.ca purchases curtailed

Thanks to Rewards Canada reader Todd W. for forwarding details about new limitations on Amazon.ca purchases made via the Aeroplan eStore. We dug a little deeper and it's not just Aeroplan who has limited what Amazon.ca purchases earn Aeroplan miles, we see the same thing with airmilesshops.ca, Rakuten (nee ebates.ca). As you can see the categories you can earn miles on have been really cut back while the cash back sites no longer award anything on Amazon.ca purchases.

Here are the updated terms for Amazon.ca purchases made via the Aeroplan eStore:

Earn 1 Aeroplan Miles for every $1 you spend on participating categories. Aeroplan miles will be earned across the following categories when shopping on Amazon.ca via the Aeroplan eStore: Apparel, Cloud Cam & Blink, Echo Devices, Eero Devices, Fashion, Fire Tablets, Fire TV Devices, Furniture, Handmade, Home, Kindle Devices, Kitchen, Luggage, Pet Products, Ring Devices. Categories for Aeroplan mile earn may change from time to time.

Please note that the following categories, as well as any others not listed above, are not eligible for earn of Aeroplan miles at this time: Arts & Crafts, Automotive, Baby & Nursery, Beauty, Books & Textbooks, Camera & Photo, Cell Phones & Accessories, Computers, Electronics & Audio, Grocery & Gourmet, Health & Personal Care, Home Entertainment, Home & Portable Audio, Jewelry, Kindle eBooks, Kindle Tablet Accessories, Lawn & Garden, Magazine Subscriptions, Major Appliances, Mobile Electronics, Movies & TV Shows, Music, Musical Instruments, Office & School Products, Outdoor, Power & Hand Tools, Shoes, Software, Sports & Outdoors, Tools & Hardware, Toys, Video Games, Watches, Wireless Accessories and gift cards.

Terms for airmilesshops.ca:
You will get AIR MILES® Reward Miles on purchases made in the following categories, all other categories are excluded. You will not get AIR MILES® Reward Miles on purchases made via the Amazon app.

Included categories: Amazon Echo Devices, Amazon Echo Look, Amazon Fire TV Devices, Amazon Fire Tablets, Amazon Kindle E-readers, Apparel, Automotive, Baby & Nursery, Cameras, Cloud Cam & Blink, Element Smart TV, Furniture, Handmade, Home Entertainment, Jewelry, Kitchen, Luggage, Luxury Beauty, Office & School Supplies, Outdoor Recreation, Pet Food & Supplies, Power & Hand Tools, Private Label Fashion, Ring Video Doorbells

Meanwhile both Rakuten and Great Canadian Rebates no longer offer cash back for Amazon.ca purchases!

Looks like these changes came about sometime in February. It couldn't have come at worse time  with online shopping exploding due everyone staying home and not going out as much to physical stores to shop!

Amazon Prime Day bonus miles & points offers from Aeroplan, AIR MILES, American Express & more

Amazon Prime Day 2019 is here! The highly anticipated two days of shopping via one of the world's largest retailers offers deals on thousands of items so it is no wonder that many other companies look to capitalize on it! This includes online shopping portals, credit card companies and even competitors! All of this benefits you, the collector, as you can earn a slew of points and miles for all those Amazon deals you are looking to score.

If you are planning to shop via Amazon.ca today or tomorrow you'll want to initiate each purchase via an online shopping portal as most, if not all of them are offering have a bonus for Amazon. Here are the offers from the four most popular online shopping portal:

Aeroplan's eStore is offering 5x Aeroplan Miles on all Amazon.ca purchases for Prime Day.  Find out more about this offer here.

airmilesshops.ca is also offering 5x miles for Amazon Prime Day purchases for today and tomorrow. Click here to find out more about this offer.

You can also choose to go via a cash back online shopping portal. Both ebates.ca and Great Canadian Rebates are offering up to 10% cash back for Amazon purchases over the next two days. Personally I prefer the mileage earning sites, not only to build up my balances but mainly because ebates and GCR's bonuses are limited to select categories and not all Amazon purchases like we see from Aeroplan & AIR MILES.

If you have an American Express card that earns Membership Rewards or Membership Rewards Select points, you'll want to make your Amazon purchases on those cards. As we detailed last week you can earn 5x points on up to $500 of Amazon purchases on the American Express Cobalt Card or earn 3 bonus points per dollar spent up to $2,000 in purchases on either the American Express Gold Rewards Card or The Platinum Card. You need to register for these offers via the emails sent by American Express, if you didn't receive the email call the customer service number on the back of your card and ask them to register you for the offer) Of course, don't go straight to Amazon after registering your card, go via one of the shopping portals listed above and then use your Amex card to complete the purchase and double dip on your miles and points!

Done with AIR MILES? Here are your other options - Part 3 Cash Back Reward Programs

As many of you know the AIR MILES Expiring Miles fiasco came to somewhat of a close late last week when they finally dropped their expiry rule after threat of legislation, a damning MarketPlace report and of course 9 months of really bad press. If you watched the MarketPlace piece you'll have seen members cutting up their AIR MILES collector cards and I've heard many more stories of people letting go of the program. So what are some of your other options? In this three part series we'll look at three types of reward programs that make the most sense for Canadian but please be aware there even more options beyond these three (ie Frequent Flyer programs, Frequent Guest programs, proprietary retail programs etc.)

Be sure to read Part 1: Coalition Reward Programs
Be sure to read Part 2: Proprietary Credit Card Reward Programs

In part three we look at cash back reward programs. These are primarily credit card based, and why wouldn't they be, credit cards are the number one source of earning any sort of loyalty points and should be part of everyone's loyalty program portfolio. Cash back is great for those who don't want or need travel rewards and want the option to be able to use their rewards on anything they want whether it is merchandise, travel or even just helping shrink that credit card balance.

Credit Cards
Outside of airline co-brand credit cards some of the earliest reward credit cards in Canada were cash back cards although they weren't all that popular. Recently we have seen an explosion of cash back card options for the Canadian market and many of them have become very rewarding, although most still provide slightly less value then some travel cards. However that is the trade off, you get a little less value but get cash that you can use on anything or slightly more value that has to be used for travel. Most cash back cards will reward you with up to 2% cash back although several have category and/or time limited bonuses where you can get up to 4% or 5% back.

Pros of Cash Back Credit Cards
With cash back credit cards you are still getting rewarded on all your purchases just like you would with any travel rewards credit cards! Every purchase counts towards that cash back you get with the card. You don't have to worry about point fluctuations, not having enough points for a reward or any of those cons associated with a traditional reward program. You can still double dip! As mentioned in Part 2 on Proprietary Credit Card Reward programs, you don't need to ditch your traditional reward programs. In fact we encourage you to collect them hand in hand with your credit card reward program as you can still swipe your Aeroplan, AIR MILES, SCENE or other loyalty cards at their respective merchants!

Cons of Cash Back Credit Cards
Unlike the Proprietary Credit Card Travel Reward programs we mention in part 2 where you can have access to your points at almost any time, the majority of cash back credit cards will only give you your cash back at the end of the year in the form of a statement credit. There are a few exceptions like the mbna Rewards MasterCard and mbna SmartCash MasterCard where you can choose to have a cheque/direct deposit sent to you on a monthly basis so you do have access to that cash much quicker! The Tangerine MasterCard is another that pays you on a monthly basis.

If Cash Back cards are what appeal to you now that you are dropping AIR MILES be sure to check out our Cash Back Credit Card comparison chart to find the right card for you.

If you bank with BMO and have had a BMO AIR MILES MasterCard and are giving up on the program but don't want to move your credit card(s) from BMO take a look at the BMO CashBack World Elite MasterCard or their BMO CashBack MasterCard as you cash back options.

Online Shopping

Are you someone who did all you online shopping via airmilesshops.ca so that you can earn reward miles on every purchase? Now your worried that you don't want to earn AIR MILES any more but would like to still be rewarded? No worries you have two major online shopping portals that will reward you with cash back on those purchases just like the way you earned miles in the past. Those two portals are GreatCanadianRebates.ca and eBates.ca. Choose either one or both, and funnel your online shopping through them to ensure you are earning cash back for all those purchases. And of course use your cash back earning credit card for each purchase as well!

As we all know cash is king and if the whole AIR MILES fiasco has turned you off of loyalty programs, than you should at a minimum go the cash back route. We always say that if you are making purchases you should be rewarded for them no matter what and cash back is a good way to be rewarded.

This concludes our three part series on your other options if you are done with AIR MILES.

Why camp out in the cold when you can earn even more miles with Black Friday & Cyber Monday online shopping deals!

The biggest shopping days of the year for the U.S. are Black Friday and Cyber Monday while here in Canada it has always been Boxing Day. In the last few years Canada has caught on to the whole craze and now we celebrate Black Friday and Cyber Monday as well.  While many people will choose to camp out at their favorite retailers for those amazing deals, most frequent flyers, mileage and points hounds will actually be happy at home relaxing in front of their computers to get their Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping done. Why? The almighty miles and points. That's why. When shopping online these people will be earning their regular credit card miles and points for purchases as they would in-store but will earn even more by shopping via online shopping portals. While many major loyalty programs have online shopping portals for shopping at your favorite retailers some stand out for the upcoming crazy shopping days as not only will you earn your base miles through the mall and you credit card miles but you'll also earn bonus miles that these portals are offering! At the time of posting it appears that many of the U.S. based programs have not released their Black Friday/Cyber Monday bonus miles offerings yet or who knows maybe they aren't having any any since they know people are going to shop anyways!

Here are RC's top 4 online mall bonuses for the upcoming Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping frenzies!

Air Miles
One of the largest and longest running Canadian online portals, airmilesshops.ca has some big bonuses in store! You'll earn 10x reward miles offer valid on qualifying purchases of $20 CDN or more, excluding shipping, duty and taxes, made in a single transaction on top of additional bonuses for individual retailers. For example,  The Source has 15x the Air Miles, which means even on a small $20 purchase you'll earn 24 Air Miles, on a $100 purchase its 120 miles! Find all the details here.

Aeroplan eStore
Getting noticeably less play than their new big shopping partner, Shop.ca, the Aeroplan eStore is still around and they're also having a Black Friday offer for online shopping. All purchases will earn 5x the miles per dollar spent and if you hold Distinction status you'll earn your relevant Distinction bonus over and above the 5x miles. Find all the details here. (oh and if you choose to shop via Shop.ca they have lots of Black Friday specials and you'll earn 5x the miles if it is your first purchase with them)

RBC Rewards eMall
One of the newest online portals in Canada, the RBC Rewards Mall is only for RBC credit card holders and they have quite the deal! Cardholders will earn up to 15x the RBC Rewards Points for online purchases made via RBC Rewards eMall. Since they state 'up to 15x' it seems like the bonus depends on the retailer, so some many not have any bonus while others will have the whopping 15x! Find all the details here.

Great Canadian Rebates / ebates.ca
Not into points or miles? You can always choose to earn cash back via the online portals that offer a rebate on online purchases. The two biggies in Canada are GreatCanadianRebates.ca and ebates.ca. ebates.ca will be awarding double cash back on Black Friday purchases, we have not seen what GCR is planning.
