Scotiabank launches new Travel Rewards Debit Card

http://www.scotiabank.com/ca/en/0,,11889,00.html#debit

A few years ago you had several options to earn rewards on debit card purchases but those options dwindled away. It was a trend that happened in Canada and in the U.S.. Now we are starting to see a comeback in being able to earn rewards on the debit side of purchases here in Canada and the latest entrant into the market is the Scotiabank Debit Passport Card.

Launching today, the Scotiabank Debit Passport Card earns up to 1 Scotia Rewards point for every $5 spent and is available with a bonus introductory offer of up to 10,000 points. There are three different chequing accounts you can have with Scotia that come with the Scotiabank Debit Passport Card.

As the points are Scotia Rewards points they can be combined with the points earned on any Scotia Rewards earning credit cards like the Scotia Gold American Express card or the ScotiaGold Passport Visa card.

The up to 10,000 point introductory bonus is awarded as such:
  • 5,000 Scotia Rewards points will be added to your Scotia Rewards Account when you open an Eligible Account (Scotia One Account, Basic Banking Account, Basic Banking Plan, Student Banking Advantage Plan, Getting There Savings Account for Youth) with a Passport ScotiaCard within the offer period and set up a payroll deposit or a total of 2 pre-authorized transactions (PATs).
  • New Scotia One Accounts will receive an additional 5,000 Scotia Rewards points with set up of payroll deposit or 2 PATs worth a minimum of $25.
This offer runs until November 30, 2017.

Scotiabank who are branding themselves the Bank of Rewards is really going after the rewards market with their current portfolio of credit cards and rewards options on bank accounts that now have two offerings: SCENE Points or Scotia Rewards points. The latter can be used to redeem for travel, Scotia Rewards Points for Credit, and much more. The travel redemption rate is 100 points = $1 towards travel booked via Scotia Rewards unless you hold the American Express version of the Scotia cards where you can book any travel with any provider and get a statement credit towards that travel. At 1 point per $5 spent the points won't rack up very quickly on their own but that's the whole points, it's meant as icing on the cake if you hold one of the credit cards that does earn lots of points and this is incentive to not only hold a credit card with Scotia but to bank with them as well.

New Aeroplan Bonus Offers from Rocketmiles - Double Miles for first timers, 1,000 Miles for the rest

The Rocketmiles offers for Aeroplan members keep changing on us! First it was 3,000 bonus miles for your first booking made up to September 30, then that was increased to 4,000 bonus miles and that offer is still live here. However there are two new offers now out that run until December 31st for booking with no set end date for the actual stays.

The first offer is for first time bookers:
Receive Double Aeroplan Miles when you make your first Rocketmiles booking booked via the special promotion page at www.rocketmiles.com/aeroplan-double. The first time booking bonus can only be earned once per member. Until Dec 31, 17

So which first time booking offer should you choose? Well if you book after September 30th that's easy, the Double Aeroplan Miles offer. However if you are booking over the next 9 days check out both offers and see whether the 4,000 comes out ahead of the double miles. If it does, book that one otherwise go with Double Miles. Chances are if it is a budget or low price hotel the 4,000 miles will be better while higher end, more expensive hotels will probably come out better with Double Miles

The second offer that also runs until December 31st is for returning Rocketmiles bookers and is valid for one booking:
1,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles on your next Rocketmiles hotel stay booked via the special promotion page at www.rocketmiles.com/aeroplan-extra. The first time booking bonus can only be earned once per member. Until Dec 31, 17

Why the Canadian market needs a rewards credit card targeted towards Millennials

There are lots of rewards credit cards in the Canadian market and we mean a lot. Well over 100 options out there and yet most follow the same premise. Pay an annual fee, meet a spend requirement, get rewarded for your spending. That will never change as that's what rewards cards are really about. However someone needs to break the standard. There is very little specific market targeting with cards. True you have to meet certain requirements to get cards like annual incomes etc. but outside of one or two cards targeted to students and one card targeting seniors/retirees there aren't any cards hitting up the biggest generational market out there: Millennials.

Millennials make up a huge portion of today's market and yet most credit cards on the market don't specify them as a market. Many of the cards on the market today, old and new are still running on the premise of non-generational targeting and rewarding what us gen x'ers and baby boomers (people born in the 50s, 60s and 70s) generally spend money on. Wonder why so many premium cards have bonus multipliers on gas station purchases? We drive minivans to soccer games and dance practices every day or in my case a huge SUV that guzzles gas so gas station multipliers make a lot of sense. But for the 20 or 30 something year old does that really appeal to them? Not as much. These are the people eating out more, ordering meals delivered to your door, taking ride sharing services everywhere and are even helping transit make a comeback. To them they aren't going to be buying a minivan or a big SUV any time soon.

The industry needs to follow the trends of what has become a big and appealing market. This on-demand generation likes pay as they go, spending money on subscription boxes, transit passes and enjoying food delivered through an app on their phone. Reward the Millennials on what they like to spend money on, a much different strategy of spending than those of us who are over 40. The funny thing is if a card company did target Millennials with a card it would more than likely provide a lot of spill over to other generations as those not considered Millennial do try to keep up with them. I’m not part of the Millennial generation but I can tell you as a parent of two very active teens we also use companies like food delivery services a lot when schedules don’t allow for a home cooked meal, we ride share on vacation and make use of many services that would be considered for the Millennial generation. So a credit card issuer would be smart to come out with a card that does target Millennials as in the end it could and would be a winner not only for them but the older generations and even the upcoming generation of Post-Millennials or Generation Z's. Right now Millennials are the 'it' generation and most reward programs and credit cards have not jumped at the fact that they are the trend that needs to be targeted right now and for 2018 at the very least!

The good news is there just may be such a card coming to the market sooner than you think. With lots of chatter happening on social, American Express is gearing up to launch a new card next week. Stay tuned for more details at that time. Cobalt.

Why I am still invested in Aeroplan

Aeroplan, one of Canada's longest running loyalty programs has been a mainstay program with many of us for as long as I can remember but now some are questioning if they should continue with the program. Personally, I am and have not changed my earning or burning habits. It has always proved useful for me when I use the program since it provides a different and more valuable experience than most other Canadian travel reward programs. That experience is the ability to redeem for business class and first-class flights on some of the best airlines in the business. Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, you name it all of these airlines have excellent business class and first-class products and you can fly them with Aeroplan. Pretty much every other Canadian travel rewards program doesn't give you that option or if they do, it’s not at the value that Aeroplan can provide it at. Redeeming for a $5,000 business class ticket to Europe will cost you 110,000 Aeroplan miles and if you achieved all those miles with a credit card means you would have spent anywhere from $55,000 to $110,000 to get those miles. Gaining the same flight through another program could easily cost you 2-4 times more than it would with Aeroplan. Now you see where the experience lies for members in Aeroplan's program.

That leads into my next reason why I am still invested in Aeroplan. The obvious and unsung benefits of the program. The obvious being the ability to get those premium class flights at a really decent value. The not as obvious are additional savings that can come with the program for items like last minute flights. From my personal experience Aeroplan can provide huge value in the last-minute realm. I had some relatives looking to fly from Regina to Calgary last minute and by last minute I mean booking at noon for a flight at 8pm that same day. To purchase the tickets that last-minute was extremely expensive but Aeroplan had availability with its Market Fare Rewards where we spent in the neighbourhood of 18,000 miles per person to get them the round-trip flights. To save literally a thousand extra dollars for the last-minute tickets with only an additional 3,000 Aeroplan miles per ticket was a huge unsung benefit to me and is something you won’t find you’d be able to with other programs that put in restrictions like booking 14 days out or having a fixed per dollar value redemption rate.

There are naysayers who say that Aeroplan will disappear in 2020. Those people either don't know are industry or even Aeroplan well enough. I have conducted numerous media interviews on the subject since it was announced in ... and I still believe strongly in what I said in those interviews. With over 5 million members Aeroplan will not and cannot simply close shop. The fact that the partnership with Air Canada will continue beyond 2020 is your first hint that Aeroplan won't be going anywhere. Secondly, Aeroplan has great relationships with the airlines that they are currently partnered with via Air Canada - namely Star Alliance airlines. Yes the press release states that Aeroplan will no longer have that relationship, and that is the relationship via Air Canada with those airlines. I have no doubt that Aeroplan is already in talks with many of these airlines in the Star Alliance to establish direct relationships. The reason why is that those airlines look to loyalty programs to help fill seats that otherwise might go empty. They'll sell those seats at a discount to Aeroplan rather then not selling them at all. Aeroplan with its 5 million members has bargaining power, they can easily sign a contract with airlines like Lufthansa, United and others and agree to buy a certain number of seats per month at great rates which then can be redeemed for by Aeroplan members. Its just like any corporation that has corporate contracts with these airlines except for the fact that Aeroplan is way bigger! Any partnership that Aeroplan negotiates and signs with an airline is a win-win for the both the loyalty program and the airline. Why wouldn't some of those Star Alliance airlines jump on board since Aeroplan already knows them and they know Aeroplan. It’s not like Aeroplan just opened shop. They have experience in the market working with these airlines for better part of three decades and the airlines know that.

Since am I still invested in Aeroplan here's what I would like to see the program do in the coming months and years. The minute a contract is signed with an airline and all the ducks are in a row let us know. Even if that partnership won't start until July 2020, don't leave us hanging. Give us some exciting news to go on. Heck it would be good for Aeroplan to do so as it may just mean you'll have a member who will have no reason to jump ship to another program and will continue to earn and burn with Aeroplan and in fact may become even more engaged in the program. I'd like to see even more partners come on board for earning and Aeroplan will need to do this to keep the strength of the program going. And by partners I don't just mean airlines but hotels, retail, restaurants, you name it. The program needs this to curtail any potential erosion to other coalition programs that are trying to grow in Canada seeing that Aeroplan, come 2020, will only be a coalition program not a coalition/frequent flyer program. Finally come 2020, Aeroplan needs to keep the premium class redemption options on Air Canada and any other partner airlines they add by that time. If they lose that option then they are at a level playing field with the other Canadian coalition programs and credit card programs.

As always, we'd love to hear from you and what your plans are with Aeroplan. Are you still using it as your primary program and if so what is making you stay invested in the program?
