Chase has let us know about a small positive change to their Marriott Premier Visa Card. The 1 Free Night at a Category 1 - 4 location upon card approval now comes with a 12 month expiration rule instead of the previous 6 month rule. This is the same for the anniversary bonus free night Category 1-5 offer.

How to utilize the IHG Rewards Club buy points bonus to save money on hotel stays

As you know late last week we brought you the details of the latest IHG Rewards Club buy points promotion. The offer is straight 100% bonus on whatever points you buy and this post will show you have you can use this bonus to your advantage to save you some money on your stays!

Let's take a stay at the Holiday Inn Express Halifax Airport. This hotel is currently part of the IHG Rewards Club PointsBreaks offer where you only need 5,000 points to stay at the hotel. We checked a stay from Dec 15 to 16th and found the 5,000 point rate was available:

To pay for that room, the best flexible rate is $139.99 plus fees and taxes. The AAA rate is $133.50 and the non-refundable prepaid rate is $125.99

Now if you don't have any points in your IHG account you could buy 6,000 points with the current bonus (3,000 + 3,000) for US $40.50 and have 1,000 points leftover.

Convert that to Canadian dollars and add GST and you are looking around $55 for that same stay. Saving you at least $70!

Need to stay 2 nights? It get's even better as 10,000 points is just over $90 for what would be at least $250 if you paid cash for the stay bringing your savings to $160 or more.

Now lets look at a non PointBreaks hotel, the InterContinental Times Square New York City.  A Saturday night stay, Jan 17-18, 2016 has the best Flexible rate is US$459

To redeem for this same room is 50,000 points

To buy 50,000 points with the bonus is US$312.50. Convert that to Canadian and add GST and you are looking at about C$425 versus the C$596.70 for the Best Flexible rate for a savings of almost $175 on that one night!!

Overall the 100% bonus on buying IHG Rewards Club points can provide great value! The offer brings the price of a point down to 0.575 of a cent and you only have to buy 1,000 points (unlike in the summer where you had to buy 26,000 or more). This per point price is less than the Points+Cash trick of buying points for 0.7 cents. If you choose to buy the maximum number of points, 60,000, it will cost you US$690 but of course you'll end up getting 120,000 points. That's 24 nights at IHG hotels if redeeming via the PointBreaks option which works out to only $28.75 per night!
 
YOU HAVE TO BUY POINTS BY NOVEMBER 30th BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THEM RIGHT AWAY. However we do recommend that you don't buy points if you don't think you'll use them in the next 3-4 months are you always run the risk of the program raising redemption rates for stays.

Air Canada Altitude moves to Altitude Qualifying Dollars instead of minimum Air Canada Flight Requirement

As you know several years ago Air Canada added the requirement that you needed to have a certain amount of flights on Air Canada metal to be able to achieve Altitude status. That requirements is now being nixed in favour of a revenue based requirement that we have seen with U.S. carriers. This means that those who buy more expensive tickets will qualify easier than those flying on fares bought during seat sales or lower fare classes (ie Flex vs. Latitude) etc.  This will definitely affect those who reach status after only several long haul flights or lots of cheaper Tango fare flights as their AQD may not match the AQM's or AQS's earned. $3,000 that's achievable for lots of you. $20,000 for SE100K? Some will have not problem but I'm thinking many will not reach that! Overall this is not good news for the Altitude program and leaves us wondering what else the program will entail for changes as this is the only news to be released so far. We’d like to inform you about some changes regarding how you will reach Air Canada Altitude™ status in 2017.

INTRODUCING ALTITUDE QUALIFYING DOLLARS
Altitude Qualifying Dollars (AQD) represent the monetary value associated with an eligible ticket and, when combined with the number of Altitude Qualifying Miles (AQM) or Altitude Qualifying Segments (AQS) you fly, will determine your Altitude status in 2017.

This new qualification requirement, which takes into account your spend on eligible Air Canada flights, will be tracked as of January 1, 2016, and will be used to qualify you into Altitude in 2017. The introduction of Altitude Qualifying Dollars (AQD) will replace the Minimum Air Canada Flight Requirement.

These changes reflect similar requirements in other global frequent flyer programs and will ensure that we continue to better recognize our most valued customers.

EARNING ALTITUDE QUALIFYING DOLLARS
You will earn Altitude Qualifying Dollars (AQD) for eligible flights flown, including:

Flights operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Express™ and Air Canada rouge™. This includes codeshare flights marketed by another airline and operated by Air Canada.

Codeshare flights marketed by Air Canada and operated by Star Alliance™ member airlines when ticketed on Air Canada ticket stock (ticket numbers beginning with “014”).

You will also receive Altitude Qualifying Dollars (AQD) for eligible Flight Pass purchases and eUpgrade Add-ons.

One of our readers forwarded news about the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card, most of we have covered here except the change to the Maple Leaf lounge vouchers::

Hi Patrick…last month I  signed up for the above noted card $399 product as it offered 50,000 aeroplan with terms of spending $1000 in 90 days. Its arrived and so has all the small print. I was also a card holder the first year this product launched and fumbled along with TD as they saw benefits and features come and go on the Privileges end of the product. The first year it launched I wrote you to advise HHonors Diamond status was dropped. It still has not been replaced. Airport Angel was initially provided and didn’t work at all for me in Toronto---it has been replaced with Priority Pass. The strangest change was with regards to 4 Aeroplan redemption only Maple Leaf Lounge vouchers….these have been eliminated by a process where one swipe for the card holder is permitted and is not transferrable to others even travelling on the same aeroplan flight reward. I have written through to their CSR team---I’ll keep you posted as to their reply. I’ve also written the VISA Privileges concierge to stir things up from that direction.

Nov 12th I wrote ----“I've reviewed the recent change of eliminating the 4 maple leaf lounge access paper vouchers and believe this has been a mistake in my opinion. One of the best features of this card was the ability to treat family to a lounge visit when travelling on an Aeroplan award. The fact that it is restricted to one swipe only and for the card holder only and is not transferable is a terrible change of process. The sheer fact that it is not transferable is a mistake as now the other parties travelling on the same reward ticket cannot benefit from a lounge visit. A simple clarification and process improvement could be to amend the terms and agreements that the swipe for entry is applicable per person so long as the primary card holders account was that which produced the Aeroplan redemption of the tickets and all tickets up to four swipe entries may now have access to the lounge.”

After writing to them our reader let us know that  TD customer service agreed to credit him a $150 fee reduction to compensate the cost of purchasing three additional entries to a maple leaf lounge.
