July 3 Update: American Express to end churning ability of their cards, Triple Avios for Hyatt stays, Voila Hotel Rewards 3x Points + 2x Elite Credit on all stays

We end the week off with some bad news for some of our readers.

News started trickling out yesterday that American Express Canada is following in the footsteps of their U.S. counterparts in that they will be limiting sign up bonuses on their cards to only once per lifetime per card. In other words no more churning American Express cards. We reached out to American Express and they have confirmed that as of this month they "are beginning to enforce gaming controls" I know for some of our readers this is going to put a big dent in the ability to travel cheaply as they were swapping out cards every 6 to 8 months to earn the sign up bonuses over and over again.  Currently the terms and conditions have only been updated on cards that earn Membership Rewards points (Gold Rewards, Platinum etc.) Aeroplan and AIR MILES. At this time the SPG card has not had these terms changed.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on this change! I know a lot of readers do not churn but I'm guessing there will be a small percentage of you who who will be very upset with it!

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles: 20% Bonus Miles when converting RBC Rewards Points (RBC Avion cardholders only)

Yesterday saw the launch of a 20% bonus for transferring RBC Rewards Points to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles for Avion Cardholders! I can't recall if we have ever seen this bonus before. We've seen them numerous times for BA, AA, and WestJet but not Cathay.  While not as lucrative as the 50% Transfer Bonus that RBC currently has for British Airways this offer can really make sense for those who have no interest in what the British Airways Executive Club program can provide but are users of the Asia Miles program.  This offer is available until August 31.

With this promo you'll get at least 12,000 Asia Miles as you have to redeem a minimum of 10,000 RBC Rewards Points.  The terms and conditions also state "20% bonus Asia Miles will be earned and each member could earn up to 20,000 bonus Asia Miles during promotion period." which would lead us to believe you cannot transfer more than 100,000 RBC Rewards Points for this offer.
Update: RBC has notified us that they had a mistake in their terms and conditions and that the offer is not limited to 20,000 bonus Asia Miles and is in fact unlimited.

July 2 Update: Reader question on Amex Gold, Air Canada Rouge to fly Toronto-London Gatwick, Alitalia MilleMiglia Status Match offer

We'll start the day off with a reader question. Louise asks :If I sign up for a Amex Gold, do I get the 25,000 sign up bonus as soon as I spend $500 or do I have to wait 3 months? Thxs."
And the answer is: "In most cases you should get the 25K within a few days of hitting the $500 level. At the very latest it would be on your first statement date after you hit the $500." In my personal experience I've seen it post within the few days of hitting $500 but have also known of others where it has taken a little longer.

Air Canada seems to making making a pre-emptive strike at WestJet. As you all know we passed along the news a few weeks ago that WestJet will start serving London-Gatwick with their new Boeing 767s next summer. What WestJet didn't tell us is which cities in Canada they were planning on flying from. Most are/were guessing Calgary and Toronto. We're now thinking Toronto may not be high on that list anymore as Air Canada Rouge has announced service between Toronto and London Gatwick starting in May 2016! The flight will operate daily basis with a Rouge 767-300ER. (Source Airlineroute.net)

Aeroplan Roundtable Discussion - Advertorial piece in the Globe & Mail and Toronto Star

If you read the Globe & Mail and/or Toronto Star print editions you may have noticed a full page advertorial from Aeroplan discussing redemption options from one of Canada's largest and well known loyalty programs.

I was one of the people asked to attend the roundtable and spent an afternoon at Aimia's office in Montreal being interviewed along with two other Aeroplan members and two employees of Aeroplan. The discussions were interesting and it was nice to hear the good and the not so good stories. The advertorial from Aeroplan is meant to focus on the value of Aeroplan and the good so you won't hear about the side that has issues, but the one thing you have to remember it is not only Aeroplan that has them. There will be haters who totally disagree with the piece and then there will be those who love Aeroplan and will agree with what is said. This is always the case with features like this. We even get emails from people who disagree with our credit card rankings and that is why we state, even with years of research, that it boils down to opinion and experience. It is what is best for you.  For some Aeroplan is best for others it is not. For me, I love program, I've been a member since 1989 (technically earlier if you take into account my Canadian Plus membership) and have used it consistently over the years (both earning and redeeming) and know many others that do as well. So when Aeroplan asked if I wanted to attend, I said sure. For complete disclosure, my expenses were paid (flight, taxi etc.) but I was not compensated for my time. I brought up some of the issues around flight availability, surcharges and even technical issues that have arisen on Aeroplan tickets when trying to change seats but those were more for the Aeroplan employees to take back for their use and knowledge. One aspect in the article talking about one way award tickets was that other programs charge 60-70% of a round trip and this was attributed to me however it was actually stated by Nadine St-Aubin of Aeroplan. I know this typically isn't the case, many charge exactly half and I said that it was great move from Aeroplan to move to a 50% rate like other programs from the previous higher rate they used to charge.

Ultimately whether you love or hate Aeroplan or any other program, it comes down to education and knowing the ins and outs of that program. Things like booking one ways versus round trips or redeeming on an airline that doesn't charge a carrier surcharge (YQ) are things that many members are unaware of and should educate themselves about.

A card with some very strong category earning (Gas, Grocery, Dining & Entertainment) sees the return of an increased sign up bonus. Earn 2.5 British Airways Executive Club Avios on Gas, Grocery, Drug Store and Travel Purchases

Now that we are a few days into the much anticipated transfer bonus from American Express Membership Rewards to British Airways Executive Club, we should look at how you can maximize this bonus! The bonus is for anyone who holds an American Express card that earns Membership Rewards points. These include the Centurion, Platinum, Gold, Green, Small Business Gold, Small Business Platinum, and Corporate Cardmembers enrolled in Membership Rewards. If you are a current American Express cardmember you'll want to see if this promotion is for you as you can use BA Executive Club Avios for travel to anywhere in the World and your not limited to Economy Class. BA and their partners like Cathay Pacific, American Airlines and other oneworld airlines also provide you the option to fly in Business Class or First Class. For example, Cathay Pacific flies between Vancouver and New York and the flights feature a first class cabin.

The best card right now to take advantage of this bonus is the American Express Gold Rewards Card. If you hold the card you'll want to up your spend in its bonus categories, Gas, Grocery, Drug Store and Travel. I personally already put all these types of purchases on the Gold Rewards Card and you really should too if you plan on using this transfer bonus. The good news is you have until September 30th to do the transfer which equates to three months of focused spending.

The card earns 2 Membership Rewards Points on eligible purchases at Gas, Grocery, Drug Store and also on Travel. With the 25% transfer bonus to BA the purchases in effect earn 2.5 Avios per dollar spent. This means it earns more than the actual RBC British Airways Visa Infinite card even on BA purchases!

You can actually start redeeming when you have only spent $1,800 in these categories as you can redeem for select one way flights within North America for only 4,500 Avios. American Express opened another Centurion lounge in the U.S. today. A smaller 'Studio' version of the great lounges can now be found in Seattle. Canadian holders of the Platinum Card from American Express get into the lounge for free while holders of other American Express cards can pay a $50 entrance fee.  There are now 6 lounges across the U.S. in the Centurion Lounge network. Great news from American Express today! We finally see a transfer bonus from Membership Rewards to British Airways Executive Club. Until Sep 30 you'll receive 1.25 Avios for every 1 Membership Rewards point. This isn't like the 50% bonus we've seen from years past but something tells me there is a glut of Membership Rewards points sitting in people's accounts right now who have just been waiting for this bonus. I would also wager a guess a lot of those points come from the American Express refer a friend program. If it wasn't for the American Express referral bonus there would be a lot less frequent flyer blogs, travel and financial blogs delving into the loyalty space in Canada right now and less people promoting the cards in their signatures on forums. So while some might whine that the bonus is only 25% I look at it this way: without the referral bonus, perhaps you would only have 50,000 Membership Rewards Points to transfer and if the bonus was 50% you'd get 75,000 Avios. However because you've referred 5 friends since the last transfer bonus in 2013, you actually have 100,000 or more points to transfer for at least 125,000 Avios so you've come out ahead in the end. I am in this boat, I've refer a few people each month (1 referral in June 2015) but contrary to some who ask, I don't get very many through Rewards Canada as we have marketing agreements with American Express that preclude continuous use of the referral links. Unfortunately some of you may not have referred friends or are new cardholders (but you can before Sep 30!)  so ultimately you are getting less compared to the last bonus but be thankful they are even running the bonus and the fact that Amex has kept the base transfer at 1:1 and not followed their American counterparts by lowering it to 5:4! Not really news but we found a flashback post from Airlineroute.net interesting! It shows Air Canada's International route network from 1985. The route that I found the most interesting was the old Toronto-London-Mumbai-Singapore route. I remember seeing this on the route maps from back then I thought what an awesome routing that would be for those of us who are avgeeks! (That term wasn't around in 1985 but the premise behind is the same!) Check out the post here.
