Front of the Line - The unsung benefit of American Express Cards

Most of the time on Rewards Canada we discuss bonus points, sign up offers or insurance benefits that come with credit and charge cards. Occasionally we discuss lounge access from these cards but there are other benefits that we don't touch upon as much.

One benefit that my family has taken advantage of over and over again that does not deal with points, business class lounges or even insurance is American Express' Front of the Line program. Having multiple Amex cards in our family card portfolio (Cobalt Card, The Platinum Card, Marriott Bonvoy) we have more than enough options to take advantage of FOTL!

What is Front of the Line? Essentially Front of the Line allows American Express Cardmembers to enjoy exclusive access to ticket presales and reserved seating offers for concerts, musicals, shows and much more.

Over the past 4 or so years we have used Front of the Line for the following concerts, musicals and shows, many of which sold out within minutes if not seconds:

From the list I believe you can tell that I have two daughters that enjoy going to concerts and shows. Truth be told that all but one of them also had my wife and I in attendance with them! Justin Bieber isn't really my thing but seeing my girls enjoy these concerts is all the incentive I need to go. Others like Lady Gaga and Imagine Dragons were simply amazing concerts while all the musicals were awesome.

I know there are other ticket services out there but Front of the Line has always come through for us not only for the tickets but also as a notification service. I was totally unaware of some of the shows so I am thankful for when the email from FOTL came through to notify me! The seats usually assigned to FOTL have in most cases been anywhere from good to amazing, never have we had a bad seat.

If you don't hold an American Express card and want access to Front of the Line you'll have to get yourself one! Even if you don't want to pay an annual fee you can get access through Amex's no fee cards like the Choice or SimplyCash cards!

The new Porter VIPorter is here - Introducing elite tiers plus changes in earning and redemption (now revenue based)

Nearly a month ago Porter Airlines announced that they were enhancing the VIPorter program. As of today those details are now out. As we knew from their teaser in August they would be moving to a revenue based program rather than flat rate points for earning and burning. They also said their will be Elite tiers and those are detailed here as well. What isn't detailed is the redemption side. Redeeming VIPorter points will be dyanmic, that is on a sliding scale. The more expensive the flight the more it will cost you in points to redeem.

As you can see from the graphic above the points earned on Porter flights will depend on what Elite Tier you are in. 5 Points per dollar for the base level, 6 points per dollar for the new Passport level (think silver) and 7 points per dollar for the new Priority level (think Gold). To reach these levels you must achieve certain spend levels with Porter and they will look at your spend this year to give you your elite status right away.

The Elite Status levels will give you benefits when flying Porter from Priority check-in to complimentary checked bags and seat selection if you hit the highest level.

Like we mentioned before we are not entirely sure of the number of points that will be required to redeem for flights. We know it will fluctuate with the actual cost of the ticket and you will have to option to pay part with points and part with cash. Since we are based in Calgary we don't have any VIPorter points to test out their booking engine to see what the redemption rates are like so we would love to have those of you who do fly Porter and have points do some dummy bookings and comment below to see what the true value of these points are!

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 16: Thanks to Noel who commented below we now know the rough value of a VIPorter Point is around 1 cent. In his example of using full points for a flight that had a total cost of $120, the full point requirement was 7,500 points + $47 for taxes/fees. So we know that the 7,500 points covers $73 of the ticket cost for a value of 0.97 cents per point. Now here is where things get good, as VIPorter member you earn a minimum of 5 points per dollar spent which equates to roughly a 5% return! If you are Passport level member that return is 6% and Priority sees 7%! Compare this to WestJet which pays 1 to 3% for Teal, and 5% for Silver and Gold. Granted WestJet has more options to earn such as credit cards, car rentals, vacations and hotel bookings but looking at flights only VIPorter comes out ahead especially for those with no elite status.

We do know that VIPorter points cannot be redeemed for flights on Interline fares (Emirates, JetBlue etc.) however  flights on those airlines that are booked through Porter will earn VIPorter points.

Finally it looks like you'll lose your VIPorter Points if you don't fly with Porter Airlines once every 2 years.

In summary it looks like VIPorter may have been feeling the heat from the likes of AC Altitude (of course) and more recently WestJet Reward elite levels as to why they felt the need to add Elite levels as well. In terms of moving to a revenue based model, it could have been expected as many airlines like Porter have gone this route.
 

British Airways Executive Club Award Sale - Save 40% on award tickets between Canada and London!

Wow the American Express 25% transfer bonus from Membership Rewards to British Airways Executive Club just got a whole lot better! How so?

British Airways has just launched a reward sale that discounts Executive Club award tickets between Canada and London by 40%.  Simply book your award travel by September 27 for travel between October 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016.

Here is Toronto to London for travel November 11-18:

This means you can get this round trip flight for 12,500 Membership Rewards Points (15,625 avios) plus the fees and taxes. Sure the taxes and fees have always been consider high but now that you only have to use 60% of the regular amount of points and add in the 25% bonus from the Amex transfer this is a deal to consider! For example the same flights bought with cash would cost $973.68 so the redemption will give you a 2.85% return on your Membership Rewards points (saving the $360) or 5.70% if all those points were acquired with the 2x multiplier on the American Express Gold Rewards Card! If this sale wasn't on I personally wouldn't look at these redemptions as a very good option to use this 25% transfer bonus on.

WestJet to serve London Gatwick from Calgary, Edmonton, St. John's, Toronto, Vancouver & Winnipeg

Earlier this year WestJet announced they will start flying to London Gatwick in 2016 with their new 767s. What they didn't reveal is which cities in Canada they would fly from. Thanks to Airlineroute.net we now know they are making an aggressive launch by serving LGW from 6 cities. WestJet have not revealed this themselves although it looks like they will be doing so tomorrow as they have press conferences scheduled in all 6 cities.

Based on this schedule it looks like WestJet will have at least three of their 767's in service by the time the routes launch as the YVR, YYC, and YYZ flights all depart on the same day within 15 minutes of each other. The St. John's flight starting the next day will operate with a 737. Although it is only one flight per week I'm sure Winnipeggers are happy to see they get London service!! All of the other cities currently get year round or seasonal London service from other airlines. Still to launch from 6 cities to London Gatwick it sure looks like WestJet wants to take a bite out of the competition!

At the time it was limited to no longer accepting new applications but now it is official that even existing cardholders will have their cards discontinued as of Oct 20. Several of our readers have forwarded the following to us:
