Amex bumps up the welcome bonus on the Platinum Card - now earn up to 100,000 bonus points

 

There is no stopping American Express as they just keep coming out with excellent limited time offers on their cards that are hard to beat! Today we see The Platinum Card offer boosted once again to where you can receive up to six figures in points. Right now when you apply for the card you can earn up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points.  Now there are also some amazing refer a friend offers that officially launched today as well that we'll cover in a separate post shortly. That offer provides up to 105,000 points for the Platinum Card

The non refer a friend bonus offer is broken down as follows:

• New Platinum® Cardmembers, earn 80,000 Welcome Bonus points after you charge $6,000 in net purchases to your Card in your first 3 months of Cardmembership– enough to redeem for a $800 credit towards eligible purchases
• Plus, you can also earn 20,000 points when you make a purchase between 14 and 17 months of Cardmembership – enough to redeem for a $200 credit towards eligible purchases (The refer a friend offer sees this section offer 25,000 points)

This offer essentially matches part of the best ever offer seen this past summer - that is the initial spend bonus and the make a purchase after month 14 bonus will net you 100K points just like the summer offer. The only thing missing this time is the 10x category spend bonus that was seen on the summer offer.

Those 100,000 points work out to a value of no less than $1,000 but you do have to take into account you will be paying two years of annual fees to earn those points. That being said you also have to take into account all the other benefits on the card like the annual $200 travel credit, the best airport lounge access benefit in the country, hotel elite statuses and more. Then you have the higher value redemption options such as converting to Aeroplan and British Airways - both of which we have minimum valuations of 1.5 cents per point which puts that welcome bonus at $1,500 but we have shown time and time again that you can easily get 2, 3 or 4+ cents of value from those programs putting the welcome bonus at $2,000, $3,000 or $4,000+ in value.
