Flight Review: Hawaiian Airlines First Class HA41/42 San Francisco - Kahului, Maui (SFO-OGG)

As you may have already seen we’ve put up a couple reviews for our Easter Trip to Maui and are trying to pump out all the reviews of this trip! We’ve covered the flights between YYC and SFO as well as the overnight stay on the way to Maui and now here we have our review of our flights on Hawaiian Airlines between SFO and OGG. Here’s a quick recap on how we got about flying this way to Maui instead of the direct flights out of YYC.
The Rewards Canada family made our annual pilgrimage to Maui, this time for Easter Break and for the first time in a long time we took connecting flights instead of flying direct. There were several reasons for this. First Air Canada rouged the Calgary to Kahului route so International Business Class pods are no longer available on the route and secondly since we were booking for Easter break which meant both Air Canada and WestJet were charging an arm and a leg for the direct flights! I started researching other options to get their comfortably and found Hawaiian Airlines was selling their first class (really business class but that’s what they call it for flights from the US mainland to the islands) but out of San Francisco. Not a big problem easy enough to fly to SFO from YYC and Air Canada has excellent pricing for business class there and back so it didn’t take long to book all the flights. The combination of AC business class and Hawaiian business calls came in at a price that wasn’t far off what WestJet and Rouge were charging! This was a good way to travel, try out a new airline and add in a day in SFO to our Maui trip
Now to the actual review of Hawaiian Airlines First Class!

We made sure the flights we booked on Hawaiian were on their relatively new Airbus A330 aircraft as they feature a newer business class cabin with lie flat seats. You can find these planes on the more popular routes between the US and Honolulu or Kahului out Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, New York and more. I checked most of the west coast cities for our trip and SFO priced out the best for Easter break. For flights out of the U.S. they classify the cabin as First Class while on their International flights to Australia, Japan etc. it is classified as Business Class.
Hawaiian Airlines does not have a lounge in SFO but with most of their departures being mid-morning and operating domestic flights you don’t have to arrive super early and really don’t need to hit up a lounge. Hawaiian does depart from the international terminal which means you could use the Air France KLM Lounge via Priority Pass.

The flight was scheduled to depart at 10am and boarding started at about 9:35am with those in First Class getting priority boarding. They board from door L2 so it’s a left turn to the premium cabin that has 18 lie flat seats. Since Hawaiian is primarily a leisure airline and there are not many single travellers flying the airline, the business class cabin is laid out in a 2-2-2 fashion for couples and families. Perfect for us as we are a family of four and for the flight there and back we grabbed seats 2CGHJ.

Almost as soon as we were seated we were offered drinks - a Mai Tai or POG. Both awesome options and very Hawaiian. On the flight there we started with POG, for those who have not been to Hawaii, POG is a staple juice of Passion, Orange and Guava juice.

For the flight back we took the mai Tais and also tried POG with Vodka and neither drink disappointed.

The seats themselves were quite comfy but I did find that when laying flat the space for the feet was quite narrow and I actually could not keep both feet beside each other comfortably, I had to cross them to fit better. Seats pairs have a privacy divider that can be extended up should you be traveling alone and don’t want to interact with whomever may be sitting beside you. A pillow and blanket were provided albeit both were small and light, more like something you would find in Economy class.

I also found the storage at the seat to be on the small side, you do have an area under the seat in front of you which I stuffed my laptop bag into but a good quarter of it was sticking out. It best fits a purse or something small like that. Each seat had a small personal reading LED lamp in addition to overhead reading lights, small storage on the side of your seat which was perfect for electronics or water bottles as well as 110V/USB plugs to charge electronics.

For in flight entertainment each seat has a retractable arm to which the flight attendants come by and  place an Apple iPad that’s loaded with TV shows and movies. Overall the selection was OK - not a ton of new releases but more than enough content for the 5 hour flight. You can choose to use your own headphones or use the noise cancelling headphones provided at no cost. Bose they are not, but overall quality wasn’t too bad.

Should your iPad get low on juice the airline does provide charging cables to power them up.
Overall the service provide onboard was impeccable - the flight attendants on both flights were very attentive! We were never short of drinks and the crews were all very friendly and eager to help. The attention to service was really good. As is customary on Hawaiian Airlines flights, the female flight attendants had the flowers in their hair.

Shortly after take off the first beverage service starts and as I mentioned above, in reality you have beverage service for the whole flight - the only difference with the after take off service is the addition of Mauna Loa Macadamia nuts. They are another Hawaiian staple and delicious to have alongside your drink!

Based on the menus the food for first/business class is developed by top Hawaiian chefs including one of our favourites from Top Chef, Sheldon Simeon. Alas our flight did not have any of his dishes. For our flight to Maui it had dishes by Chef Chai. I started with the cheese plate - can’t really mess that up and it was good. Our older daughter choose the Ahi and Salmon Poke which she enjoyed. All four of us chose the Sriracha chicken dish as our main. It looked better than it was as the chicken - as seems to be common when you fly - was rubbery. The sauce was OK but it really needed a gallon of it to help the poor chicken.

The flight back featured food by Wade Ueoka. We choose the Jidori chicken salad and the Meatloaf. These were a lot better than the food on the way Maui - edible and quite tasty. The POG pie was really good - one of the better deserts we have onboard in sometime.

After experiencing Hawaiian's premium class for the first time we may never fly direct again to the Islands (unless AC brings back an Internationally configured plane or WestJet puts their 787's on the route, both of which are highly unlikely now) as we really enjoyed the flights. The service, the comfort and overall feel of the flights were great. Sure it's not direct but the overnight stays add extra adventure to the travels and we have already talked about which city we'd connect in next time - so far San Diego is winning!

For most Canadians, if you don't live near Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary or Toronto you are going  to have connecting flights to get to Hawaii so this is something you can look at as many don't consider this option. If you are looking for a fun, Hawaiian themed and relatively well priced premium experience flying to Hawaii I would most definitely recommend flying Hawaiian Airlines on their A330's to the islands!

Lounge Review: Plaza Premium Lounge - Edmonton International Airport (Domestic/International Departures)

Another Bill W lounge review for you! Bill is a true road warrior, his work has him driving and flying across Western and Central Canada every week while staying in a variety hotels from a variety of chains.  Bill has been reading, following and even giving Rewards Canada tips and updates for a very long time so let's welcome him back with this contribution!

The Plaza Premium Lounge is located upstairs near Gate 52. There is a choice of stairs or an elevator to take you to the second floor. At the top of the stairs, turn right to access the lounge (Turning left will lead you to the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge). The entrance is open and inviting. This lounge is open to all travellers regardless of which airline you are flying.

The charge to enter the lounge varies with the length of time you will be staying. Cost per person is: 2 hours for $50.00, 3 hours for $60.00 and 6 hours for $80.00. You can also join Priority Pass for discounted Lounge access. They have 3 levels of membership that allow for different access privileges. Full information can be found on their website (link includes an exclusive Rewards Canada discount). In addition, various AMEX cards come with complimentary Priority Pass membership, though these can carry a substantial annual fee. The AMEX Aeroplan Reserve Card includes a complimentary Priority Plus membership (as well as worldwide Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge membership), with an annual fee of $899.00. The Platinum Card from American Express is another option which includes Priority Pass membership, the annual fee is $699. The Platinum Card has the Canadian Platinum Lounge benefit which grants complimentary access for the cardholder, spouse and two children under the age of 21, or one travel companion.

Once inside, the initial seating area is open with lots of room to move around, the tables/chairs are spaced well apart. There is also additional seating at the back of the lounge past the food service area and turn left. With a seating capacity of 80 spread over 4,500 square feet, finding a place to relax was quite easy.

The selection of food is very good. During the morning there is a selection of hot food including Scrambled Eggs, Baked Beans and Pork & Beef Sausages. There is also an assortment of cereal, muffins, pastries, yogurt, sandwiches and toast.  For those looking for something different for breakfast, they also offer Corn Salad, Spinach Pasta and Garden Salad. For the evening, the choices were Chicken Afritada, perogies and a rice medley. The Corn Salad and Garden Salad as previously mentioned are available along with a Quinoa Bean Salad and Hummus with Wheat Pita Bread.

You also have a choice of hot beverages that they will make to order for you. These include various lattes (Café, Vanilla, Caramel…) along with iced coffees and assorted teas. And there is self-serve cooler filled with various flavors of Pepsi products. Alcohol is available from the bar after 10:00 am. There is a limit of 4 alcoholic beverages per person as per Alberta Gaming & Liquor Commission’s (AGLC) regulations. They have two local Craft Beers on tap along with wine and spirits. The bar area also has 4 TV’s behind it showing a variety of shows (usually News & Sports).

The washrooms are located in the second seating area, past the business centre on the right. (Make sure you choose the correct door, the one at the very end is alarmed).

There is a Business Centre area available if you don’t wish to pull out your laptop. It is set-up on a counter space along the wall with 4 computers available. To the right of that is a selection of magazines to choose from.

The overall atmosphere is very relaxing; it is nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of a busy airport. There are no boarding announcements made in the lounge, but a Departures screen is available near the front entrance and also in the back seating area. The lounge is tastefully decorated and have some local pictures that have been increased in size to make more of a feature wall.

As the lounge is located on the second floor, it offers a lovely view of the terminal through the many windows that are available. This allows you to see if the gate area is busy and also to appreciate why you are in the lounge and not having to wait at the gate for any extended period of time.
I would recommend this lounge to anyone who is looking for a quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of a busy airport. It is very quiet and just a great place to relax before heading off on your next adventure.

Have you visited this lounge? What do you think of it? What do you like and what do you think could be done better?

For the best access to this lounge no matter what airline you are flying or what fare class and want to have your family get access look no further than The Platinum Card from American Express:

June 11 Update: Air Canada adds fast satellite Wi-Fi to international fleet, Canalta Rewards-Humboldt Broncos donation update & more

Air Canada has expanded their Wi-Fi options on their planes which we have become accustomed to mostly for flights within North America to some of their international flights:
Air Canada has begun offering next-generation, satellite connectivity on its wide-body international fleet with the introduction of Air Canada Wi-Fi provided by Gogo. Starting with flights operated by Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, the new service will be the fastest available on any Canadian airline and makes Air Canada the first Canadian carrier to offer customers the ability to stream TV and movies in-flight through the internet.

Air Canada Satellite Wi-Fi is now available on the airline's Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and on Air Canada Rouge's narrow-body fleet. The entire Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge wide-body fleet – including the Boeing 777-200LR, 787-8/9 and Airbus 330 and Air Canada Rouge Boeing 767-300ER – is scheduled to be equipped with the system by mid-2019. Customers can choose from a selection of Wi-Fi packages to suit their needs and Air Canada is offering special introductory pricing for the service starting at $5 on the airline's Boeing 777-300ER fleet until August 31, 2018. Customers can determine if a flight has Wi-Fi available by an icon displayed at time of booking or, for upcoming flights, by consulting www.aircanada.com/wifi.

Since early April Canalta Rewards members have been donating their points to help the Humboldt Broncos after their tragedy. The donations closed towards the end of May and members donated a total of $17,250 of their points to the cause! Canalta Rewards topped up the amount to provide the full donation of $20,000 to the SJHL Player Assistance Program. These funds will be used to help support the team as they work towards returning for the 2019 season. Bill Chow (President of the SJHL) can be seen accepting the cheque from Gary Hoffert (Regional VP of Canalta Hotels) on behalf of the SJHL and Humboldt Broncos.

New sign up offer for the RBC Visa Infinite Avion - Up to a 25,000 point bonus and first year free

THIS OFFER IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE

On May 31st we saw the end of one of the best offers that we had seen for the RBC Visa Infinite Avion card, essentially it offered 25,000 points for free. That offer expired to be replaced by this one - the end result is the same but it takes a little bit more work. This time you can still get to 25,000 points and have the first year free but you'll have to put some spend on the card this time.  When approved you'll get 15,000 points then when you spend $1,000 on the card in the first three months you'll be awarded with 10,000 more points for 25,000 total - and the first year annual fee is waived. So technically speaking you are still getting the 25,000 points for free assuming the $1,000 in spending you put on the card is spending you would do otherwise. This is an easily achievable spend requirement only only $333.33 per month so if you missed out on the offer that ended in May this next one is as close as you'll get to it and still really good to take advantage of.

Those 25,000 points will equate to 25,000 British Airways Avios at no cost! Or 250 WestJet dollars at no cost and that doesn't even take into account the transfer bonuses they run occasionally throughout the year. And remember BA has household accounts so you and your spouse could each get the card then convert to BA and combine the Avios into one account for 50,000 or more Avios. There are just so many options here....

This offer is slated to end on July 31, 2018.

Choice Hotels has revealed the details of their Summer promotion and once again it is the same offer we always see from them. They word the promotions differently in terms of get a free night, get a $50 gift card etc. however the gist of the promos are the same, they will award you enough bonus points after you complete 2 separate stays to have 8,000 points after those stays. In this case it is the $50 Gift Card offer, which mean you can use those 8,000 points to redeem for one of the featured cards at the 8,000 point level instead of 16,000 points if you redeem by September 30th  (they have gone back to September after shortening it last summer to the end of August). Your better option is to use those points towards a future award night or even conversion to an airline program to top off an account for an award ticket.
