How I maximize my everyday American Express card spending

I have now had the American Express Gold Reward Card for almost six years and have to say it is still the favourite card in my wallet. My love of the card along with the fact that it is so flexible led to it be ranked the #1 overall travel rewards card in Canada in our recently released 2016 rankings.

Related: Canada's Top Travel Rewards Credit Cards for 2016

On top of that I also have The Platinum Card from American Express primarily for the benefits it comes with but also for the accelerated points earning it provides. When you hold both these cards as the primary cardholder, the points from both will accumulate into the same Membership Rewards account. By using both I really make my MR points balance grow quickly!

The American Express Gold Rewards Card earns 1 Membership Rewards point per dollar spent on everyday purchases except on Gas, Grocery, Drug Store and Travel purchases where it earns 2 points per dollar.

The Platinium Card from American Express earns. 1.25 Membership Rewards points on everyday purchases.

Now you should see where I am going with this. To maximize my Membership Rewards earning I put all possible purchases that aren't Gas, Grocery, Drug Store or Travel on The Platinum Card to earn the 1.25 points as long as that merchant accepts American Express.  For Gas, Grocery, Drug Store and Travel purchases, these all go on my Gold Rewards Card. Tons of groceries and of course tons of travel have really pushed the balance up in my Membership Rewards account, not to mention fueling up two vehicles.
Maximizing the Amex program by using the Gold Rewards Card for gas purchases
(Source Rewards Canada Instagram)

I also make sure we buy gift cards only at the 2 times multiplier locations, usually the grocery store but sometimes drug store and gas stations as well. So those $25 Gift Cards we're buying that the kids take to birthday parties are at least earning 50 points each or when Safeway runs their big AIR MILES bonuses for buying gift cards, those go straight onto the Gold Rewards Card:

Example of using the Gold Rewards Card for Gift Card purchases!

Screenshot of my Membership Rewards account showing 2 purchases with the Gold Rewards Card
and one with the Platinum Card.

So in the end I am earning anywhere between 1.25 and 2 Membership Rewards points for any purchases made with an Amex card. Now you might be thinking well that's only worth 1.25% to a 2% return on your spending, why not use a card that provides a straight 2% return? This is true if I was to only use the points for American Express' TripFlex feature where you can book any travel at anytime and redeem the points against the charge at a rate of 1,000 points = $10. I do actually use the TripFlex feature but I combine it with transferring points to Aeroplan and British Airways. This is where the bigger value lies. With both those programs I value their respective currencies between 1.5 and 2.3 cents per mile/Avios at a minimum (ie for an economy class flight redemption) Take those points being earned on my everyday American Express spend and you can see that those points now take on return of anywhere between 1.875% to 4.6% per dollar spent. Redeem those points via Aeroplan or British Airways for business class and the rate return gets even higher. On average, for me my rate of return is above 2% so that is why it is better than the straight 2% return cards for me. I do love the flexibility of these cards and that is why they rank so high in our rankings, having that option of redeeming for any flight or travel I want via the TripFlex feature or being able to convert to Aeroplan, British Airways, Alitalia and more just gives me so many options. Essentially I am diversifying my portfolio without actually diversifying my spending habits.

Even if you only carry the Gold Rewards Card and don't want or cannot afford the Platinum Card there is no harm in using it at the 1 point per dollar locations to ensure you are building up the balance in your Membership Rewards account.

There you have it that is how I maximize the spending on my American Express cards. How do ensure you are earning the most points possible with your spending? Tell us below!

January 27 Update: Hainan Airlines confirms Calgary-Beijing service, Triple Avios for Accor stays, China Airlines Vancouver bonus!

News, Tips & Tricks
As we mentioned well before Christmas, there were rumours of Hainan Airlines launching new service between Calgary and Beijing. Looks like that rumour has come true as Airlineroute.net has found that Hainan has loaded the flights into their system. The service will commence on June 30 and will operate 3x per week. We already cover Hainan and their Fortune Wings program here on Rewards Canada as the airline does serve Toronto. It is currently running a promotion for the entire year for flights between North America and China of up to 20,000 bonus Fortune Wings miles so the new Calgary flight should automatically be included. One should also note that Hainan Airlines is an Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan partner so you don't have to credit miles to Fortune Wings if you do take this flight. At the time of writing this the two airlines had not launched redemption options although that should be coming soon.

January 26 Update: SkyTeam Alliance Travel Hack, Avis bonus for Aeroplan Distinction members, Hilton introduces new hotel brand

Relatively quiet day compared to yesterday...

News, Tips & Tricks
Check out our potentially lucrative travel hack for flights on SkyTeam Alliance airlines. If it works and on paper (well websites) it does, it could be huge...  Find out more here.

Hilton Hotels
has announced a new mid-scale hotel brand that will be launching later this year in the U.S. but will eventually come to Canada as well. The new brand is called Tru by Hilton. The brand already has 102 hotels signed on and 30 more in the works. Find out more here.

Tru by Hilton's innovative features include:
  • The Hive, a first floor experience that's more than a lobby - 2,770 square-feet of open space with unique ways for guests to engage with others or spend time alone - in one of four distinct zones for lounging, working, eating or playing.
  • The Play Zone, filled with table games, a large-screen TV (featuring DIRECTV), and tiered, stadium-inspired seating.
  • A centrally located Command Center - a re-envisioned front desk - featuring a social media wall with real-time content to foster engagement among guests, and a 24/7 market offering fun snacks and refreshments, single-serve wine and beer*, healthy light meal options and sundries for purchase.
  • A complimentary "Build Your Own" breakfast consisting of a toppings bar with 30 sweet and savory items allowing guests to customize bagels, donuts, Greek yogurt and oatmeal to satisfy their taste buds and cravings.
  • Smart and efficiently designed guest rooms full of the things that matter most - all-white comfortable platform beds, 55" TVs, eight-foot wide windows, access to power everywhere, and surprisingly spacious bathrooms.
  • A fitness center that defines wellness trends, rather than follows them, with a concept focused on cardio, strength and flexibility.
  • A technology-forward mentality featuring segment-leading complimentary Wi-Fi bandwidth allowing guests to download and stream content on their devices, plentiful power sources, and mobile check-in, room selection and Digital Key available through the Hilton HHonors mobile app.
  • A collaboration with DIRECTV, offering guests more than 150 channels, like they have at home.
  • Rooms and linens cleaned by P&G Professional's (NYSE: PG) top hospitality brands, including Tide® ProfessionalTM, Swiffer® ProfessionalTM and Febreze® ProfessionalTM to help enhance the guest experience and drive operational efficiencies.
  • A brand personality that's full of life with a spirited culture grounded in a thoughtful, reliable and unflappable approach to guest service.

Potential to get a short haul SkyTeam flight for three cheap car rentals. Who's up for trying?

Alright, full disclosure upfront. We have not tried this ourselves but while updating Garuda Indonesia bonuses for our GarudaMiles page on FrequentFlyerBonuses.com we posted their new offer for Rentalcars.com car rentals and it seems like it is one of those promos that can really be taken advantage of to earn a lot of miles on the cheap. Normally we don't cover Garuda Indonesia here on Rewards Canada but seeing that you can use GarudaMiles for flights on their SkyTeam partners we felt this was important enough to share here.

The bonus pays 5,000 bonus Garuda Miles when you complete a rental.

Offer Details:
5,000 Bonus GarudaMiles when you rent a car via Rentalcars.com. Full details. Until Mar 31, 16

And the terms of rentals:
Terms and condition:
  • Book and confirm a car rental at http://www.rentalcars.com/?affiliateCode=garudamiles and complete your booking process
  • Earn 3 GarudaMiles for every 1 USD of spending on a car price, only through the designated site above
  • You must be an existing GarudaMiles member to earn mileages.
  • To be eligible to earn mileage, your GarudaMiles membership number must be inserted in the Driver Details page when making a booking on this designated website.
  • GarudaMiles are only earned when you have paid for, picked up and completed the car rental.
  • Please allow approximately 6 to 8 weeks after the drop-off date of your car rental for GarudaMiles to be credited into your GarudaMiles account.
  • GarudaMiles will not be earned on the other items purchasable online such as Full Protection.
  • GarudaMiles will also not be earned on any items that you purchase offline when you are picking up the car from the local car rental company such as baby seat, GPS, travel insurance and one way fees.
  • GarudaMiles terms and conditions apply.
  • GarudaMiles will not be earned on rentals being paid directly to local supplier on arrival.
5,000 bonus miles on a rental that doesn't appear to have a minimum length or certain car category requirements? Nor no terms about only being a one time bonus? That peaked our interest. So a quick look at Garuda's award charts shows that for 15,000 miles you can redeem for an award ticket on their SkyTeam partners that is less than 1,000 miles in length:

This potentially means that three rentals made via RentalCars.com would get you enough miles for this short haul SkyTeam redemption. We did a quick search for rentals via Garuda's link for RentalCars.com (you have to ensure you use that link!) in our home city of YYC (which isn't known as a cheap city for rentals):

The total price was CDN$35 for a 2 hour rental (looks like you can have it for a day), so three rentals would be CDN$105 to earn the 15,000 miles (+ loose change in miles as you earn 3 miles for every USD spent before taxes/fees). Not a bad deal for a flight that could cost significantly more than that!

THERE IS A CATCH HOWEVER! To redeem miles for a SkyTeam ticket via GarudaMiles you have to go to a Garuda Indonesia sales office in person. They only have two offices in Canada, one in Toronto and the other in Vancouver. If your travels take you to the U.S. or overseas you can also visit their offices in many cities around the globe. You can find all the offices here.

So if you can make it to one of there offices are you up for the challenge? My bet is that you can find even cheaper rentals than I found above to achieve those miles at an even lower cost. Heck maybe you want to do more than three rentals to get up to higher award levels or business class flights. If you plan on doing this please let us know and keep us up to date on how it goes. First, make sure you join GarudaMiles if you haven't yet (you'll get 1,000 miles for doing so) and take screen shots of the bonus offer and terms just in case you need to fight for the miles.

China Airlines Dynasty Flyer: 3,747 Bonus Miles when flying in premium economy between Vancouver and Taipei

China Airlines has launched a new bonus for its Dynasty Flyer members flying between Taipei and Vancouver. If you travel in Premium Economy (Fare Class W/U/E) you'll earn an additional 3,747 Dynasty Flyer miles. This bonus is tied into China Airlines starting Boeing 747 service between the two cities on January 12th.

Offer Details

January 25 Update: WestJet expands to Nashville, IHG PointBreaks and SkyTeam member XiamenAir adds Vancouver

News, Tips & Tricks
Despite the weakness of our Loonie, WestJet is expanding their service to the U.S.. The route of note is a new city for WestJet, Nashville, Tennessee! The country music city will be served 5x a week from Toronto via WestJet Encore on their Q400s. The other expansions are Vancouver to San Diego 3x per week and the return of a daily service between Toronto and Los Angeles. Also included in the update is the addition of a Calgary to Thunder Bay route! (Source WestJet)

XiamenAir
which is based out of Xiamen China will be lauching 3x weekly service between Vancouver and Xiamen. The airline is a SkyTeam alliance member which means you can use programs like Delta SkyMiles, Air France KLM Flying Blue etc. to earn and redeem on their flights. XiamenAir also has their own FFP called Egret Club. The flights will start this July with a Boeing 787-8 aircraft. (Source Airlineroute.net)

and the last good news of the day which you would have seen on the blog earlier today was the release of IHG's PointBreaks. Yes there weren't many Canadian locations but still a great hotel points redemption option!

IHG Rewards Club PointBreaks - 5,000 Points for Award Night Redemptions at 170+ Hotels (5 in Canada) until Apr 30, 16

The latest set of IHG Rewards Club PointBreaks are now bookable for stays from today to April 30th (subject to availability).

Each Reward Night at these participating hotels will be only 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points during the above mentioned dates. Remember the new PointBreaks rules that a member can only book up to 2 reward reservations per hotel participating in the individual offer (ie 2 at Pointbreaks hotels).  My tip to get around this would be to book 2 reservations with one IHG Rewards Club account and then have your spouse book 2 more etc. Of course this is dependent on both accounts having enough points to redeem for these awards. Also be sure to book these ASAP as once the allotted nights are booked at certain locations those hotels will fall off the list.

Why are IHG Rewards Club Point Breaks such a great deal? Because they offer reward nights at participating IHG hotels Worldwide for only 5,000 Rewards Club points. For those of you not to familiar with IHG Rewards Club , normal redemption rates for Rewards Club reward nights run from as low as 10,000 points for some Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express locations to 50,000 points for ultra-luxurious InterContinental locations and even these locations can participate in PointBreaks. So as you can see you can receive a discount of 50 to 88% off the regular redemption rates. You may be thinking that the high end hotels won't participate but they do depending on the time of year! Please note that like most loyalty promotions these offers are capacity controlled so I advise to book sooner than later to ensure you get the PointBreaks rate. These offers will be bookable via the primary PointsBreaks page later today but right now you can book via the individual links below. (list pulled from the IHG blog)

Once again, as we has been for well over a year if not more, the showing in Canada isn't that good. Not that redeeming 5,000 points at these hotels is bad, in fact, its a great deal but seeing that only 5 hotels are participating, that's not so good. We were guessing that number might be bumped up due to our struggling economy and granted 2 of the 5 hotels are in the Edmonton region which has been hard hit but we figured there would be more hotels this time.
