January 12 Update: AIR MILES losing Lowe's, Rona & Reno Depot, Alaska Airlines will not adjust oneworld partner charts and Virgin Atlantic status match to British Airways

And so it continues - as first reported by Milesopedia. AIR MILES will be losing a major partner at the end of this month. The Lowe's group of partners (Lowe's, Rona, Reno-Depot) will end their partnership with AIR MILES on January 31. This marks another blow to the AIR MILES program and further adds fuel to the topic of the coalition program model dying a slow death in Canada. After this there aren't many prominent nationwide partners left in the program, you have Amex, BMO, Shell, Safeway/Sobeys, Staples and a few other major players but gone are the days of having so many nationwide partners to choose from.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan will not be adjusting their flight reward charts when they join oneworld - at least not for oneworld partner airlines! Just as predicted in our latest podcast episode where Anshul stated that there is the possibility of a devaluation but not right away. And as VFTW learned from Alaska Airlines there are no planned changes to their current oneworld partner pricing on March 31:

We’ll announce award pricing for new oneworld partners as redemption is launched. As always, we’ll strive to give at least 90 days’ notice if changes were coming to any current partner awards.

Also from Alaska Airlines comes news that they will be adding one more tier to their elite status program. There are no details yet about the yet to be named top tier level that will be awarded at 100,000 miles.

Tough to say if some of you are able to jump on this offer but I wanted to put it out there for our readers. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club has launched a status match for British Airways elite members. I know there a good subset of our readers that have BA status so this offer could be of interest to you. I do say tough however as you have to book and fly on Virgin Atlantic to have the status match fulfilled. That's where the problem lies. Virgin Atlantic doesn't fly to Canada anymore and then of course you have all the travel restrictions that in place right. Granted you only have to register and book by February 28 but you have until the end Virgin's flight schedule to actually take that flight. Learn more here.
