Loyalty Points earned while doing business are no longer taxable benefits

I do not know many people who have claimed their miles or points they earned while on business or employer paid business trips, but technically those miles and points were considered a taxable benefit. However the Canada Revenue agency has changed that rule in that benefits earned in loyalty programs while on employer dollar are not taxable unless they are converted to cash.

  1. Just wondering merchandise purchased using Etihad airlines point and delivered to canada will be taxed in canada or not?

  2. I would imagine that it depends on the value of the item and the place of manufacture. At a minimum, like most shipments into Canada you will have to pay GST.
